A wider molecular spectrum of beta-thalassaemia in Myanmar.

Two hundred and nine beta-thalassaemia (beta-Thal) alleles of 158 unrelated Myanmar patients (107 HbE-beta-Thal; 51 beta-Thal major) were analysed for beta-globin gene mutations. Amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) characterized six beta-thal mutations known to Myanmar [betaIVSI-1(G-->T), codon 41/42(-TCTT), betaIVSI-5(G-->C), codon 17(A-->T), betaIVS II-654(C-->T), and -28 Cap (A-->G)] in 166/209 (79.4%) alleles. DNA sequencing of 24 alleles from 43 ARMS-negative samples (20.6%) identified an additional 12 new mutations, to produce a total of 18 different mutations. Nineteen allel

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase variants in Kachin, Myanmar.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an X-linked recessive genetic disorder that can cause severe anemia in affected individuals exposed to oxidative stress. This risk is particularly relevant in patients treated with the antimalarial drug primaquine. In Myanmar, primaquine has been widely administered as a Plasmodium vivax malaria treatment; however, prevalence of G6PD deficiency among the population remains insufficiently characterized. This study investigated the prevalence of G6PD variants among various minority ethnic subgroups residing in Kachin State, Myanmar. Blood sa

Utilization of modern contraceptive methods and its determinants among youth in Myanmar: Analysis of Myanmar Demographic and Health Survey (2015-2016).

Reproductive health service is crucial for youth to reduce maternal and child mortality. However, many young women face unintended pregnancies and pregnancy-related complications due to insufficient knowledge of contraceptive methods and low contraceptive utilization. This study aims to assess the modern contraceptive prevalence rates among youth and identify factors influencing modern contraceptive utilization among youth. We used Myanmar Demographic and Health Survey (2015-2016) data. This study included 1,423 men and 3,677 women aged 15-24 years from all states and regions of Myanmar. We us

Evaluations of candidate markers of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine resistance in Plasmodium falciparum isolates from the China-Myanmar, Thailand-Myanmar, and Thailand-Cambodia borders.

BACKGROUND: The fast-declining clinical efficacy of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DHA-PPQ) in Cambodia is a warning of the underlying westward dissemination of piperaquine resistance in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). Mutations in the Plasmodium falciparum Kelch 13-propeller (PfK13) and the P. falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter (PfCRT), as well as plasmepsin 2/3 gene amplification, have been discovered as molecular markers for predicting DHA-PPQ treatment failure. Determining whether these genetic variations of P. falciparum are linked to DHA-PPQ resistance is critical, especi

Gender-specific differences in high-risk sexual behaviors among methamphetamine users in Myanmar-China border city, Muse, Myanmar: who is at risk?

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (MA) use is a significant public health concern due to its negative effects on health. However, to date, no epidemiological research has examined high-risk sexual behaviors (inconsistent condom use, having multiple sexual partners and having a history of sexually transmitted infections) among MA users. This topic is particularly important in Myanmar, which is recognized as one of the key MA production countries in the Southeast Asia region. Therefore, this study examined factors associated with high-risk sexual behaviors among MA users in Muse city, Myanmar. METHOD

Identification of Genetic Variants Causing Paediatric Cataract in Myanmar.

Genetic testing for paediatric cataract detects a cause in 50%-70% of affected children but is as low as 20% in some reports. We screened 180 cataract-related genes in 22 children (from 20 families) with paediatric cataract from Myanmar using whole-exome sequencing. Pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants were identified in 45% (9/20) of probands in genes MIP, COL2A1, NHS, GJA8, GJA3, CRYGC, CRYBB2, PAX6 and SLC7A8. Variants of uncertain significance likely to be important were identified in three children for a maximum diagnostic rate of 12/20 probands (60%) comparable to other reports. This

Taeniasis among Refugees Living on Thailand-Myanmar Border, 2012.

We tested refugee camp residents on the Thailand-Myanmar border for Taenia solium infection. Taeniasis prevalence was consistent with that for other disease-endemic regions, but seropositivity indicating T. solium taeniasis was rare. Seropositivity indicating cysticercosis was 5.5% in humans, and 3.2% in pigs. Corralling pigs and providing latrines may control transmission of these tapeworms within this camp.

Subtype distribution of Blastocystis in Thai-Myanmar border, Thailand.

Blastocystis sp. is a common zoonotic intestinal protozoa which has been classified into 17 subtypes (STs). A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis in villagers living on the Thai-Myanmar border, where the risk of parasitic infection is high. A total of 207 stool samples were collected and DNA was extracted. PCR and sequencing using primers targeting small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene were performed. The prevalence of Blastocystis infection was 37.2% (77/207). ST3 (19.8%; 41/207) was the predominant subtype, followed b

An extensively drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolate from Myanmar.

OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) including multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa has emerged as one of the serious public health threats across the globe. Southeast Asia is a 'hot spot' of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, including MDR P. aeruginosa. Despite Myanmar being located in Southeast Asia and suffering from a high infectious disease burden, data on MDR and XDR P. aeruginosa from Myanmar are limited. In this communication, we report the draft genome of an XDR P. aeruginosa isolate, MMXDRPA001, that was identified during a routi

BURMESE ROOFED TURTLE (BATAGUR TRIVITTATA) DISEASE SCREENING IN MYANMAR.

The Burmese roofed turtle (Batagur trivittata), a critically endangered freshwater turtle, is endemic to Myanmar. Once thought to be extinct, remnant wild populations were discovered in 2001 and limited captive individuals identified in pagoda ponds or confiscated from fishers in Myanmar. These and their offspring are maintained in five facilities in Myanmar and form the basis of a conservation program (habitat protection, captive breeding, nest protection, egg collection, head-starting, and release). Prerelease health screenings were performed in 2014 and 2018 at Yadanabon Zoological Gardens,

Workflow for Identification of Burkholderia pseudomallei Clinical Isolates in Myanmar.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the highly infectious and causative organism of melioidosis, was first identified in Myanmar in 1911. B. pseudomallei was identified in Myanmar because of its genetic relatedness to Burkholderia species. In this study, we identified two isolates of Burkholderia cenocepacia, two Acinetobacter baumannii complexes, and 18 clinical isolates of B. pseudomallei using Vitek 2. These isolates were first screened using a latex agglutination test, which showed positive results in 20 of the 22 isolates. All isolates were cultured on Ashdown՚s agar and further tested using molec

Systematic Review of Human Poisoning and Toxic Exposures in Myanmar.

The International Health Regulations (2005) promote national capacity in core institutions so that countries can better detect, respond to and recover from public health emergencies. In accordance with the 'all hazards' approach to public health risk, this systematic review examines poisoning and toxic exposures in Myanmar. A systematic literature search was undertaken to find articles pertaining to poisoning in Myanmar published between 1998 and 2020. A number of poisoning risks are identified in this review, including snakebites, heavy metals, drugs of abuse, agrochemicals and traditional me

Traditional medicinal plants used by the Mon people in Myanmar.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Myanmar's Mon people largely depend on a traditional medical system for health care, however, information about their medical plants is rare in the current literature. In this first ethnobotanical study of Mon traditional medicinal plants (MTMs), we attempt to answer three research questions: 1) What species are used as MTMs by the Mon people and what diseases can be treated with these MTMs? 2) What are the general characteristics of these MTMs? 3) Which species and their usages have high consensus of knowledge? AIM OF THE STUDY: We aimed (1) to document both t
