Bronchial atresia is a rare congenital malformation that is often complicated by infectious disease; however, mycobacterial infection is rare. Here we report a case of Mycobacterium avium infection complicating congenital bronchial atresia. A 50-year-old woman consulted our institution for further investigation of a nodular lesion in an emphysematous lung due to congenital bronchial atresia. Because we were unable to rule out malignant disease, we performed video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. After left S8 segmentectomy, the nodular lesion were diagnosed as Mycobacterial avium infection. Thr

Granulomatous infections of the genitourinary tract are rare, especially those caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria. A case of prostatitis due to Mycobacterium avium complex in an immunocompetent man is reported. The patient had sterile pyuria, and a Mantoux skin test, using 5 tuberculin units, was positive (induration, 10 mm in diameter). Pathologic examination of the prostate revealed necrotizing granulomata with acid-fast bacilli, and repeated performance of urine cultures before initiating therapy yielded M. avium complex.

The typical radiographic presentation for Mycobacterium avium complex lung disease (MAC-LD) is either nodular bronchiectasis or cavitary lung disease. The former is seen most commonly in middle-aged or elderly Caucasian females with the characteristic asthenic phenotype, and the latter in middle-aged male smokers with COPD. We present the case of a young, otherwise healthy woman, with no significant risk factors, who was incidentally found to have MAC-LD with associated bronchiectasis. The patient's treatment and clinical course over a period of 5 years was marred by erratic follow up, intermi

Pathogens that are transmitted between the environment, wildlife, livestock and humans represent major challenges for the protection of human and domestic animal health, the economic sustainability of agriculture, and the conservation of wildlife. Among such pathogens, the genus Mycobacterium is well represented by M. bovis, the etiological agent of bovine tuberculosis, M. avium ssp. paratuberculosis (Map) the etiological agent of Johne disease, M. avium ssp. avium (Maa) and in a few common cases by other emergent environmental mycobacteria. Epidemiologic surveys performed in Europe, North Ame

In this case report a 10 year old Freiberger mare with a Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium infection is presented. This infection leads to a tuberculosis like disease with granulomatous alterations particularly of the intestines and lungs and is only sporadically reported in horses of Central Europe. Diarrhoea, mastitis and neck stiffness as well as dyspnoea and chronic cough are more specific symptoms of the infection, while weight loss, weakness and lethargy are nonspecific signs. As these clinical signs can occur in many other diseases, the diagnosis of mycobacterial infection is difficult a

BACKGROUND: Although fluoroquinolones are considered as alternative therapies of pulmonary Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease, the association between fluoroquinolone resistance and MAC genotypes in clinical isolates from individuals not previously treated for MAC infection is not fully clear.
METHODS: Totals of 154 M. avium isolates and 35 Mycobacterium intracellulare isolates were obtained from treatment-naïve patients with pulmonary MAC disease at the diagnosis of MAC infection at 8 hospitals in Japan. Their susceptibilities of moxifloxacin were determined by broth microdilution met

Despite the antimicrobial mechanisms of vertebrate phagocytes, mycobacteria can survive within the phagosomes of these cells. These organisms use various strategies to evade destruction, including inhibition of acidification of the phagosome and inhibition of phagosome-lysosome fusion. In contrast to mycobacteria, Coxiella burnetii, the etiologic agent of Q fever, inhabits a spacious acidified intracellular vacuole which is prone to fusion with other vacuoles of the host cell, including phagosomes containing mycobacteria. The Coxiella-infected cell thus provides a unique model for investigatin

Mycobacterium avium complex strains and Mycobacterium paratuberculosis are closely related intracellular pathogens affecting humans and animals. M. avium complex infections are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in AIDS patients, and M. paratuberculosis is the agent of Johne's disease in ruminants. Genetic manipulation of these micro-organisms would facilitate the understanding of their pathogenesis, the construction of attenuated vaccine strains and the development of new drugs and treatment methods. This paper describes the replication of mycobacterial shuttle phasmids and plasmids,

Twenty Mycobacterium avium/intracellulare strains of diverse origins and two reference strains of each of Schaefer's serotypes 1-21 were examined by immunodiffusion analysis. The results produced three distinct groups, which we have called A, B and C. Two of these, A and B, appear to be variants, perhaps subspecies of M. avium, and Group C is M. intracellulare. Within each group, rough variants, untypable by Schaefer's agglutination method, were found to be antigenically identical to the smooth parent strain by immunodiffusion analysis. The results obtained were essentially in agreement with t

Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare (MAI) is, among acid-fast bacilli, the most common cause of nontuberculous pulmonary diseases, and MAI infections are often treated according to the guidelines of the American Thoracic Society. However, despite the use of multiple drugs, patients sometimes do not recover with the initial round of treatment. Other kinds of nontuberculous mycobacteria are sometimes found in patients' respiratory samples, even during such treatment for MAI pulmonary disease. We experienced three patients with pulmonary disease due to Mycobacterium abscessus (MA) in whom the dise

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are emerging human pathogens, causing a wide range of clinical diseases affecting individuals who are immunocompromised and who have underlying health conditions. NTM are ubiquitous in the environment, with certain species causing opportunistic infection in humans, including Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium abscessus. The incidence and prevalence of NTM infections are rising globally, especially in developed countries with declining incidence rates of M. tuberculosis infection. Mycobacterium avium, a slow-growing mycobacterium, is associated with Mycobact

Like other tuberculous and nontuberculous mycobacterial pathogens of human lung such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. abscessus, M. avium is likely exposed to a variety of stressors during infection, including hypoxic conditions inside activated macrophages and in the avascular necrotic regions of granulomas. How M. avium survives hypoxic stress to establish a chronic infection is currently not well understood. Using RNA-sequencing, we here show that M. avium grown under progressive microaerophilic conditions activates more than 4-fold a subset of 16 genes, the expression of 13 of which is

As opposed to tuberculosis, pleurisy hardly develops in patients with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection. In spite of increasing prevalence of NTM infection, little is known about thoracoscopic or pathological findings of the NTM-infected pleura. We now report the first case of NTM pleuritis with multiple granulomatous nodules in the pleura. A 74-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to massive effusion of the left thoracic cavity. The analysis of pleural fluid showed lymphocytic exudative effusions with increased levels of adenosine deaminase, although culture of the pleura

Although Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is the most common pathogen in nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) pulmonary diseases, endobronchial lesions caused by MAC infections are very rare even in an immunocompromised host. Herein, we describe the case of a 59-year-old, HIV-negative and non-immunocompromised woman who developed multifocal pulmonary infiltrations with endobronchial lesion caused by M. avium. Bronchoscopic examination revealed white- and yellow-colored irregular mucosal lesions in the bronchus of the left lingular division. M. avium was identified using sputum culture and bronc

Granulomatous enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium was diagnosed in a pet ferret evaluated for anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea. Delayed gastric emptying was identified during barium sulfate contrast radiography. A constriction in the duodenum, which was an area of granulomatous inflammation on histologic examination, was surgically removed. After removal of this lesion, the ferret did well for 8 months, but clinical signs returned. At a second surgery, a nodule was removed from the pylorus. The ferret died 2 weeks later. At necropsy, granulomatous inflammation, with acid-fast organisms, wa

Isolation of Mycobacterium avium complex from sputum specimens in association with the appearance of a new cavitary (or infiltrative) lesion was studied in 299 patients from whom the organism was isolated one or more times. Of the patients studied, 114 showed only single isolation. Of these 114, only two patients (2 percent) had association with appearance of a cavitary lesion. Of 29 patients who showed two isolations, 26 (90 percent) had the association. Of 40 patients who showed three isolations, 39 (98 percent) had the association. All 116 patients who showed four or more isolations had the

A 5-year-old neutered male Siamese cat was examined by a veterinarian because of a recent decrease in appetite and a large lymph node in the left mandibular area. Clinical findings included fever, icterus, leukopenia, and progressive anemia. Despite various treatments, the cat died approximately 3 weeks after initial examination. The main necropsy findings included necrotizing and granulomatous lymphadenitis of the left mandibular lymph node, multifocal necrotizing hepatitis, and interstitial pneumonia. Acid-fast bacilli were detected in lesions of the mandibular lymph node, liver, lung, splee
