Adrenal myelolipoma (MLS) is a rare, benign and non-functional neoplasm, composed of adipose tissue and myeloid. We report a rare case of adrenal myelolipoma of a 20-year-old female revealed with chronic abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen guided diagnosis and surgical resection was performed given symptomatic and bulky mass. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis. At 18 months after the surgery, the patient had no evidence of recurrence. The diagnosis of MLS is radiological. Therapeutic abstention is the rule for a small, asymptomatic tumor. The surgical rem…

INTRODUCTION: Adrenal myelolipoma (AML) is the second most common and invariably benign primary adrenal neoplasm. Due to the variable proportion of fat and hematopoietic elements and its often large size, it can cause differential diagnostic problems. Several reports confirmed the utility of miRNAs in the diagnosis of tumors, but miRNA expression in AML has not yet been investigated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed on 30 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) archived tissue samples [10 each of AML, adrenocortical adenoma (ACA), and adrenocortical carci…

A case of bilateral adrenal myelolipoma is presented. The patient was a 40-year-old man in whom a retroperitoneal tumor was unexpectedly found by ultrasonography. Computed tomography revealed bilateral adrenal masses, 14.0 cm in diameter on the right side, and 5.0 cm on the left side, with heterogeneous low density components. Magnetic resonance imaging also revealed a high intensity mass with heterogeneity. Laboratory examination of adrenal function revealed normal results. We confirmed myelolipoma of bilateral adrenal gland, and performed right adrenalectomy, and left tumor enucleation. The …

Adrenal myelolipoma is a rare, benign, non-functioning tumor. It is composed by fat and hematopoietic tissues. We present the case of a 33-year-old woman with diagnosis of a 14 cm diameter non-functioning right adrenal incidentaloma, with imaging features suggestive of myelolipoma. Based on the benign nature of the tumor, laparoscopic resection was performed. Histopathology showed a myelolipoma, weighting 444 grams. The patient evolved with an uneventful postoperative period. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy for a giant myelolipoma was feasible and successful.

OBJECTIVES: Primary mediastinal myelolipoma (PMM) is a rare benign tumour composed of haematopoietic tissue and mature adipose tissue. Here, we report the largest series aiming to investigate the outcomes of surgical treatment for patients with PMM.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 12 patients operated in a single institute during the period between April 2008 and December 2014.
RESULTS: There were 7 female and 5 male patients between 54 and 73 years old (median age, 64 years). Among them, 11 patients underwent unilateral (n = 10) or bilateral (n = 1) mass resection via video…

Myelolipomas are rare benign tumors often detected as adrenal masses. Extra-adrenal myelolipomas are encountered even more rarely. The rate of detection of these lesions is increasing with improved radiological techniques. Because of their localization and morphological similarities to well differentiated liposarcomas, extra-adrenal myelolipomas need to be differentiated from other aggressive neoplasms. Preoperative imaging and percutaneous biopsy are important tools in the diagnosis of these lesions. We report a very rare case of an extra-adrenal perirenal myelolipoma associated with hemolyti…

Myelolipomas are benign tumors composed of mature fat and bone marrow elements. We report a case of adrenal myelolipoma associated with hereditary spherocytosis which was treated with splenectomy seventeen years ago. The hematopoietic stimulus of the hereditary spherocytosis might have been associated with the development of adrenal myelolipoma in the present case.

IntroductionMyelolipomas are very rare benign tumours consisting of hematopoietic cells and mature adipose tissues. They are most commonly found in the adrenal glands. However, there have been several reported cases of extra-adrenal myelolipomas, most commonly in the presacral region. Nearly all presacral lesions are small and asymptomatic; thus, most are discovered incidentally on imaging studies.Presentation of caseWe report two cases of presacral myelolipomas. The first is a 48-year-old female presenting with atypical back pain, found to have a mass in her presacral region with a size of 3,…

A 42-year-old male patient presented with intermittent abdominal pain and gastrointestinal discomfort present for 4 years. Work-up included … gery. The patient's recovery was uncomplicated. Pathologic assessment indicated that the mass was a myelolipoma. Extra-adrenal myelolipomas are rare and typically found within the retroperitoneum but are extremely rare within the spleen. This case report adds the 6th such case to the literature and demonstrates the need for it to remain in the differential di …

Adrenal myelolipomas (AMLs) are rare benign adrenal tumors, containing adipose and hematopoietic tissue, a result of reticuloendothelial cell metaplasia. Incidence on autopsy has been reported from 0.08% to 0.4%. AMLs are generally considered nonsecretory. The functional aspect of adrenal incidentaloma should be evaluated. In this article, we report a case of a 40-year-old male, who presented with uncontrolled hypertension and renal failure, with imaging revealing an adrenal incidentaloma. He was started on dialysis for acute fluid overload, and workup for pheochromocytoma revealed an elevated…

Two cases of extraadrenal myelolipoma with unusual clinicopathologic features are described. The patient in case 1 had multifocal myelolipomas, involving both the lung and retroperitoneum, that mimicked malignancy, and the patient in case 2 had a single diffuse retroperitoneal myelolipoma without circumscription. Of possible etiologic significance is the fact that both patients were treated with exogenous steroids.

Myelolipoma is an uncommon tumor composed of adipose tissue and normal hematopoietic elements, and is most often found in the adrenal glands. We report a patient with a posterior mediastinal myelolipoma. The 68-year-old male patient showed a right lower mediastinal shadow in a chest X-ray. A computed tomographic scan demonstrated a right posterior mediastinal mass. Magnetic resonance imaging provided additional useful information. The patient underwent a successful resection under video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.

A markedly echogenic and sharply marginated suprarenal mass was found incidentally during an abdominal sonography in the case of three patients. One female patient died due to a mesenterial infarct, in the other cases the tumors were removed surgically. In two cases the histological diagnosis indicated a myelolipoma of the adrenal gland, in one case an angiolipoma attached directly to the adrenal. Myelolipoma is a benign and hormone-inactive tumorous lesion, which most commonly occurs in the adrenal gland. Knowledge of the clinical and sonomorphologic characteristics along with computed tomogr…

A 24-year-old woman with non-pituitary dependent Cushing's syndrome was found to have bilateral adrenal myelolipomas at surgery. These benign tumors consist of bone marrow and fat and are uncommon incidental findings that are discovered by computed tomography. Myelolipomas have rarely been associated with Cushing's syndrome, but the cause of the syndrome has not always been defined, because the reports preceded modern diagnostic methods. Careful examination of the adrenal glands from our patient showed a fusion of myelolipoma elements and adrenal cells without distinct adenomas or the typical …

The patient was a 66-year-old male. Computed tomography( CT) scan revealed a tumor of the posterior mediastinum 2 years before and grew slowly 49.0 to 51.4 mm in the longest diameter of the coronal slice. Thoracoscopic surgery was performed to resect it. The pathological examination revealed a predominantly mature adipose tissue with hematopoietic tissue in hematoxylin and eosin( HE) staining and the hematopoietic tissue was comprised of mature erythroblasts, megakaryocytes, and granulocytes in immune staining, which diagnosed it as myelolipoma. Incidence of myelolipoma which originates from b…
