Infantile myofibromas obstructing opposite ends of the gastrointestinal tract.

Myofibromas are benign congenital tumors of soft tissue that can present at birth or during infancy in solitary or multicentric forms. Visceral myofibromas are rarely reported, but are typically symptomatic due to involvement of vital structures. We present two cases of congenital myofibromas, one obstructing the proximal esophagus and the other obstructing the distal rectum. Lessons learned from the treatment of these two patients are shared and the pertinent literature is reviewed.

Myofibroma of the oral cavity. A rare spindle cell neoplasm.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining good mental health among Emergency Department healthcare workers (ED HCW) is paramount to well-functioning healthcare. We measured mental health and COVID-19 symptoms in ED HCW at a COVID-19 epicenter. METHODS: A cross-sectional, convenience sample of adult (≥18 years) ED HCW in Brooklyn, New York, USA, who were employed at ≥50% of a full-time effort, was surveyed September-December, 2020 with reference period March-May 2020. An anonymous email-distributed survey assessed gender, age, race, healthcare worker status (clinical versus non-clinical), SARS-CoV-2 testing, nu

Myofibromas presenting in the oral cavity: a series of 9 cases.

OBJECTIVES: Solitary myofibromas are well described in the head and neck, but oral examples are less well known, and jaw lesions are rare. We studied the clinicopathologic features of a series of such lesions. DESIGN: Nine cases of oral myofibromas were retrieved from archives and studied. RESULTS: Two cases involved the mandible (intraosseous), 3 involved the gingiva, 2 involved the tongue, and 2, the hard palate. There were 4 men and 5 women, aged 9 months to 50 years (mean, 24 years; median, 27 years). Deep lesions showed typical histology, with paucicellular lobules and intervening heman

Solitary intraosseous myofibroma: a rare case diagnosed from mandibular fracture.

Intraosseous myofibroma is a rare tumor of benign nature, slow growth, and low morbidity. The aim of this article is to report a case of pathologic fracture associated with the incidental diagnosis of myofibroma in the mandible of an adolescent. A 15-year-old girl reported that she experienced a physical assault resulting in facial injuries 1 month previously and had since experienced severe pain, malocclusion, and chewing difficulty. The cone beam computed tomographic examination revealed multiple features suggestive of pathologic fracture associated with a hypodense lesion with lobulated lim

Solitary intestinal myofibroma an unusual cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction.

Congenital solitary myofibroma is an exceptional tumor of newborn period and presents as solitary or multiple lesions usually confined to soft tissues. It induces intestinal obstruction or perforation, which most frequently involves the jejunum and ileum. However, jejunoileal atresia is the most frequently encountered cause of small bowel obstruction in the neonatal period. We report a new case of solitary myofibroma located in the wall of the ileum, measuring 2.3 cm2 in size, about 25 cm from the ileocecal junction, in a 17-day-old baby girl who presented with abdominal distention and bilious

Orbital Cellular Myofibroma: A Rare Case With Detailed Vascular Characterization.

This case report describes a rare presentation of orbital cellular myofibroma in a 30-year-old female who initially presented with right proptosis and conjunctival injection. Endovascular embolization followed by surgical resection revealed an unencapsulated, vascular tumor with histopathologic and molecular findings consistent with cellular myofibroma harboring an SRF::RELA gene fusion. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges associated with orbital tumors and the importance of considering myofibroma in the differential diagnosis. The report also underscores the role of multidisciplina

Paediatric myofibroma of the parotid gland: a rare masquerade of pleomorphic adenoma.

Paediatric parotid masses are relatively rare clinical entities, with pleomorphic adenoma representing the predominant benign aetiology. We document the clinical trajectory of a male patient in middle childhood presenting with an asymptomatic, progressive left parotid mass. Although preliminary MRI and cytology favoured a diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma, the patient underwent a left superficial parotidectomy for definitive management. Histopathological assessment unveiled an unencapsulated spindle cell neoplasm characterised by a vague nodular architecture, hyalinised stroma and increased mit

A rare case of solitary palatal myofibroma in a young pediatric patient.

Myofibroma (MF) is a benign spindle cell neoplasm rarely found in the oral cavity. It is common in males than females (2:1) and mostly seen to develop before 2 years of age with few cases reported in adults. This article reports a rare case of solitary MF of the hard palate in an 8-year-old female child; highlighting the clinical features, histopathology, differential diagnosis while emphasizing the importance of immunohistochemistry in establishing an accurate diagnosis and management of the same. The objective should be to differentiate benign versus malignant spindle cell lesions of smooth

Gingival myofibroma in children: report of 4 cases with immunohistochemical findings.

Oral myofibroma is a rare tumour which usually occurs in children and has been reported in the mandible, tongue, buccal mucosa with only a few cases reported from the gingiva. It appears alarming clinically due to its fast growth which may mimic a malignancy. However, it is completely benign and is usually treated by complete surgical excision with excellent prognosis. Clinically, myofibroma presents as a single swelling when it occurs on the gingiva, and more common lesions such as fibrous epulis, pyogenic granuloma and peripheral odontogenic fibroma, myofibroma are usually considered in the

Mandibular Myofibroma and Severe Trismus: A Complex Case and Review of Complications.

A female child was investigated for insidious onset of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and trismus in the setting of a mandibular myofibroma. Myofibromas, benign mesenchymal neoplasms composed of spindle cells, are rarely found in the oral cavity, most commonly in the mandible. These lesions are historically described as indolent with a high cure rate and minimal recurrence rates following surgical resection. The patient initially presented with concerns regarding snoring, retrognathia, and jaw ankylosis, as well as a history of trouble latching as an infant but without obvious physical de

Corneal Myofibroma (Keloid) in a Young Patient with Neurofibromatosis Type 2.

We present a 27-year-old male patient with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), facial palsy, and lagophthalmos following acoustic neuroma removal and an impressing vascularized corneal tumor, which was excised. Histology showed a fibrous tumor with small vessels, and immunohistochemistry was positive for vimentin and negative for smooth muscle actin, S100, and GFAP. We assume a corneal myofibroma (keloid), which in this case rather represents a reactive lesion. This entity has not been described before in NF2 or in facial palsy-associated lagophthalmos in general.

Solitary myofibroma of the sigmoid colon: case report and review of the literature.

UNLABELLED: A 58-year-old woman presented with a solitary myofibroma that arose in the sigmoid colon. Computed tomography revealed a highly enhanced intramural mass (1.3-cm maximum diameter) in the proximal sigmoid colon. Histologically, the tumor exhibited a biphasic growth pattern, which comprised haphazardly arranged, interwoven fascicles of plump, myoid-appearing spindle cells with elongated nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, and more cellular areas of primitive-appearing polygonal cells that were arranged in a hemangiopericytomatous pattern. The tumor cells were positive for smoo

Myofibromas and myofibromatosis of the oral region: A clinicopathologic analysis of 79 cases.

The clinicopathologic features of 79 myofibromas or myofibromatoses of the oral and maxillofacial region were studied. The case studies were taken from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. The tumors affected 44 males and 33 females (gender was unknown in 2 cases). The patients' ages at diagnosis ranged from birth to 84 years, with mean and median ages of 26.6 and 22 years, respectively. Four patients had infantile myofibromatosis; 2 had extraoral bone lesions and 2 had multiple subcutaneous tumors. In descending order, tumors involved the mandible, tongue, lips, cheek or bucc

Myofibroma mimicking peripheral nerve sheath tumour with ulnar nerve compression symptoms.

We report a case of myofibroma encasing the ulnar nerve on the medial aspect of the left arm with motor and sensory deficit secondary to compression. Initially, the tumour appeared to be a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumour based on preoperative imaging, with clinical examination positive for left hand clawing and a positive Wartenberg's and Froment's sign. However, intraoperative dissection demonstrated that the mass did not originate from the ulnar nerve proper, lowering suspicion for a peripheral nerve sheath tumour. Histopathological analysis showed spindle cell neoplasm, consistent wit

Isolated Splenic Myofibroma in a Child on 18 F-FDG PET/CT.

We present a rare case of an isolated splenic myofibroma in a child evaluated with 18 F-FDG PET/CT. An 8-year-old boy underwent PET/CT for a left cervical mass, which incidentally revealed a splenic nodule (1.3×1.0 cm) with markedly increased 18 F-FDG uptake (SUV max =8.1). MRI showed an enhancing, low T2-weighted signal nodule without diffusion restriction. Histopathology after splenectomy confirmed myofibroma. Isolated myofibromas are rare benign spindle cell tumors in children and can demonstrate intense 18 F-FDG uptake, mimicking malignancy. Awareness of this potential false-positive pitfa

Spontaneous Radial Nerve Palsy due to an Unrecognized Myofibroma: A Case Report.

CASE: A 33-year-old woman presented with a six-month history of spontaneous radial nerve palsy and no identified lesion on imaging. She underwent operative exploration where an hourglass deformity was seen and resected. Pathology returned as a rare tumor, a myofibroma. The patient regained full radial nerve function. CONCLUSIONS: A trial of observation is often indicated in the cases of isolated nerve palsy where anatomic lesions have been eliminated. This case highlights that imaging studies can miss a tumor involving nerve and that painless, spontaneous nerve palsy may be a time where early

Solitary intramuscular myofibroma in an adult: Case report and MR imaging findings.

Myofibroma is a benign, soft tissue neoplasm that predominantly affects infants and young children. Most occur in the skin or subcutaneous tissues, with a predilection for the head and neck regions. We describe the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and histophathologic findings of a rare case of intramuscular myofibroma of the right deltoid in a healthy 30-year-old male. MR imaging revealed a well-circumscribed intramuscular mass, with isointense signal on T1-weighted images, hyperintense signal on T2-weighed images, and a "target-sign" with peripheral rim enhancement after gadolinium administra

Myofibroma of the distal biceps brachii tendon: imaging findings of a rare entity.

The case highlights the complementary role of dynamic ultrasound and magnetic resonance in an atypical cause of anterior elbow pain. Ultrasound revealed a hypoechoic mass adjacent to the distal biceps tendon and enabled assessment of its close relationship with the tendon by demonstrating movement synchronous with tendon excursion. Although establishing the final diagnosis was challenging, it was ultimately achieved through histological examination.
