Solitary infantile myofibromatosis presenting as multiple subcutaneous lesions: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Infantile myofibromatosis is a rare benign mesenchymal disorder characterized by the proliferation of myofibroblasts, representing the most common fibrous tumor of infancy and early childhood. Solitary infantile myofibromatosis is the most common variant, typically presenting as a firm, painless dermal or subcutaneous mass. This case is notable for the early prenatal detection of multiple subcutaneous lesions, initially presumed to be lymphangiomas, but later confirmed as infantile myofibromatosis postnatally. The diagnostic challenge highlights the importance of prenatal imaging a

Giant intracranial infantile myofibromatosis of the skull base: report of two cases.

Infantile myofibromatosis is a rare and nonmalignant pediatric tumor of myofibroblastic origin that may occur in solitary or multifocal forms. Soft tissue of the head and neck, trunk, and extremities, skeleton, and viscera are usually involved. Intracranial involvement is reported to be extremely rare, and its clinical picture has been poorly characterized. We present two cases of giant infantile myofibromatosis of the skull base with intracranial involvement. The first case with prenatal diagnosis involved extensively the extradural space of the occipital region and was previously treated by

Massive infantile myofibromatosis of the upper lip causing airway distress in a newborn.

Infantile myofibromatosis is a rare condition characterized by benign spindle cell tumors most commonly involving the head, neck, and chest. An infant female with a prenatal diagnosis of a large facial mass was delivered via Cesarean at 34 weeks. Sparse prenatal care was received. Following delivery, the neonate was found to have an 8 cm ulcerative mass involving the upper lip and philtrum. Respiratory distress developed, and mask ventilation was difficult secondary to the size of the mass. The patient was successfully intubated after numerous attempts and then transferred to the children's ho

Spinal canal involvement in infantile myofibromatosis: case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: An unusual case of infantile myofibromatosis with spinal canal involvement is reported and the literature is reviewed. PATIENT AND METHODS: A female neonate had bladder and bowel dysfunction and paresis of the lower extremities. RESULTS: Intrapelvic and paravertebral masses with extension into the spinal canal were detected by imaging studies. In addition, radiologic examination showed multiple metaphyseal radiolucent lesions of the long bones and pathologic fracture of the left femur. The histopathologic diagnosis of the paravertebral tumor and bone lesions was infantile myofibroma

Adult and infantile myofibromatosis: a report of three cases affecting the oral cavity.

Myofibromatosis is a rare but well recognized entity which was originally thought to affect only neonates and infants. It is now apparent however that adults may also be affected. Solitary cases affecting the oral cavity appear to be rare and only two cases of solitary lesions in adults appear in the literature. This report documents three solitary cases; two typical lesions in infants and a lesion from the tongue of an adult. The lesions were composed of small polygonal cells and large elongated cells in a scant fibrous stroma. The elongated spindle cells were identified as myofibroblasts by

Generalized infantile myofibromatosis with visceral involvement presenting as diffuse hypopigmented macules at birth.

The initial clinical presentation of infantile myofibromatosis can vary from subtle skin changes to large tumors. Here, we describe a case of congenital generalized infantile myofibromatosis which presented with diffuse hypopigmented macules, some with subtle atrophy and telangiectasia. Further workup revealed visceral involvement which led to treatment with systemic chemotherapy. Awareness of this rare clinical presentation is crucial to expedite workup and treatment given the poor prognosis in infants with visceral involvement.

Recurrent infantile myofibromatosis in a 19-month-old boy presenting as ulcerated plaque.

A 19-month-old boy presented to our department with ulcerated plaque on the right lumbar region. The lesion was known to have been growing for about 5 months. At another center 9 months prior to presenting to our department, the patient's parents reported a history of cutaneous nodules from the same lumbar region. Their total excision was performed, and the pathology report stated that it was infantile calcifying fibromatosis or nodular fasciitis. The patient was healthy with a nonsignificant, medical history including no use of medications, no known drug allergies, and no significant family h

Clinicopathological features of myofibromas and myofibromatosis affecting the oral and maxillofacial region: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Myofibromas are rare benign neoplasms composed of myoid cells and myofibroblasts. This study aimed to systematically review case reports and a series of myofibromas (MF) and myofibromatosis (MFT) occurring in the oral and maxillofacial regions in order to describe their main clinicopathological features. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Electronic searches were conducted in 2023 in four databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and EMBASE. A manual search and a sea

An update on myofibromas and myofibromatosis affecting the oral regions with report of 24 new cases.

OBJECTIVES: Myofibromas are uncommon soft tissue tumors exhibiting considerable histopathologic overlap with other benign and malignant entities. The treatment of lesions arising in the oral cavity is controversial. Here, we present 24 new cases and review the literature. STUDY DESIGN: A search for oral myofibromas was performed within the archives of the University of Florida Oral Pathology and Surgical Pathology Services (1994-2015). Demographic information and immunohistochemical results were recorded. MEDLINE and Web of Science were searched for reports of myofibroma of the oral cavity an

Solitary myofibroma preceding the development of multicentric myofibromatosis: A report of two cases with surveillance recommendations.

Infantile myofibroma is the most common fibrous tumor of infancy. Despite the frequency of these tumors, the natural history is incompletely understood. We present two cases with a unique pattern of disease: solitary myofibromas with subsequent progression to diffuse myofibromatosis. Given the variable spectrum of disease and the corresponding difference in morbidity and potential mortality based on the extent of disease, we propose surveillance recommendations.

A Rare Case of Infantile Myofibromatosis Presenting to the Emergency Department as Undiagnosed Long Bone Fractures.

Infantile myofibromatosis is a disorder of mesenchymal tumors that usually presents within the first 2 years of life. Most patients initially present because of the presence of visible or palpable subcutaneous tumors. We report a case of a fussy 5-week-old infant who presented to an emergency department with bilateral femur fractures initially thought to be due to nonaccidental trauma or a metabolic bone disorder. She was ultimately diagnosed after admission with infantile myofibromatosis after taking an extensive family history and after further laboratory and radiologic evaluation. There are

PDGFRB mutants found in patients with familial infantile myofibromatosis or overgrowth syndrome are oncogenic and sensitive to imatinib.

Recently, germline and somatic heterozygous mutations in the platelet-derived growth factor receptor β (PDGFRB) have been associated with familial infantile myofibromatosis (IM), which is characterized by soft tissue tumors, and overgrowth syndrome, a disease that predisposes to cancer. These mutations have not been functionally characterized. In the present study, the activity of three PDGFRB mutants associated with familial IM (R561C, P660T and N666K) and one PDGFRB mutant found in patients with overgrowth syndrome (P584R) was tested in various models. The P660T mutant showed no difference w

Infantile hemangiopericytoma versus infantile myofibromatosis. Study of a series suggesting a continuous spectrum of infantile myofibroblastic lesions.

The clinicopathologic features of 11 tumors, originally diagnosed as infantile hemangiopericytomas and with a spectrum of morphologic findings, are described. The age of the patients ranged from 6 days to 7 years; seven patients were younger than 1 year (mean, 2.25 years; median, 10 months); six were boys and five were girls. Three neoplasms were situated in skin or subcutis and seven in deep soft tissue; in one case the depth was unstated. Seven lesions arose in the lower limbs, and one each in the lumbar region, clitoris, chest wall, and soft tissue of the zygomatic region. One patient later

Clinico-pathologic correlations of myofibroblastic tumors of the oral cavity. II. Myofibroma and myofibromatosis of the oral soft tissues.

BACKGROUND: Myofibroma is a solitary benign tumor of myofibroblasts. Myofibromatosis describes multiple, simultaneous myofibromas at different sites in various organs. The clinico-pathologic correlations of myofibroma/myofibromatosis confined only to oral soft tissues were analyzed. METHODS: In the English language literature, 41 myofibroma and 12 myofibromatosis cases involving the oral soft tissues were found. From our files, three new myofibroma cases were added. RESULTS: Age at time of diagnosis of oral mucosa myofibroma ranged from birth to 70 years (mean 21.7 years), considerably highe

Myofibroma of the zygomatic bone in an older child: a case report.

Myofibroma/myofibromatosis is a rare mesenchymal disorder that is part of a heterogeneous group of approximately 20 disorders that are classified primarily according to the proliferation of benign fibrous elements. These lesions can arise during a wide range of ages, with many occurring in the first decade of life, and they are slightly more common in males than females. The etiology of this disease is not well understood. Clinically, patients with myofibroma/myofibromatosis present with various signs, ranging from superficial, cutaneous, purplish macules to freely movable subcutaneous masses
