Prevalence and effects of a parasitic trematode on the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, in the Boston Harbor.

The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a keystone species in the North Atlantic that plays critical roles in nutrient cycling, water filtration, and habitat creation. Blue mussel populations have declined significantly throughout the North Atlantic due to various factors, including habitat loss, pollution, increasing water temperature, and parasites. One parasite is Proctoeces maculatus, a digenetic trematode, which uses M. edulis as an intermediate host. This parasite causes reduced growth, castration, and death in mussels. The range of P. maculatus has expanded northward from Cape Cod, MA to Ma

Pharmacological induction of larval settlement and metamorphosis in the blue mussel Mytilus edulis L.

The blue mussel Mytilus edulis L. is an important aquaculture and fouling species in northern seas. Although the general role of chemical cues for settlement of larvae of the blue mussel has been proposed, few studies have focused on induction of settlement and metamorphosis by pharmacological agents. In this study, the induction of larval settlement of the blue mussel by pharmacological compounds was investigated through a series of laboratory experiments with an aim of identifying artificial cues for laboratory bioassay systems in fouling and antifouling research. Thermal history modulates PFUnDA and PFTeDA toxicity in the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent contaminants of increasing concern in aquatic ecosystems, yet their interactions with climate-related stressors remain insufficiently understood. This study evaluated whether prior exposure to a moderately elevated temperature modifies the sub-cellular responses of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis to two long-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) and perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PFTeDA). Mussels were pre-exposed to 23 °C for 6 days and then exposed for 14 days at 17 °C to PFUnDA or PF

Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) lipid extract prevents metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is increasing year by year and it has become an important factor that endangers health. Blue mussel lipid extract (BMLE) is rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and astaxanthin, which has strong anti-inflammatory activity and has been shown to have a good effect on type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, and so forth. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of BMLE on MASLD and its possible mechanism. RESULTS: The results showed that BMLE could significantly reduce liver lipi

Antihypertensive effect and mechanism of Mytilus edulis-derived peptide in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

This study aimed to investigate the stability, hypotensive effects, and underlying mechanisms of Mytilus edulis-derived angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides (MEPs-F) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). The results demonstrated that MEPs-F exhibited remarkable stability under thermal treatment, various pH conditions, high-salt exposure, and simulated gastrointestinal digestion. The MEPs-F(H) group produced maximum short-term reductions of 49 mmHg in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and 71 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and the maximum long-term reductions reached 85 an

Nanoplastics exacerbate cadmium toxicity in Mytilus coruscus through bioenergetic exhaustion and tissue disintegration.

The combined pollution of nanoplastics (NPs) and heavy metals poses an emerging threat to marine ecosystems, yet the bioenergetic mechanisms underlying their synergistic toxicity remain poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the synergistic lethal effects of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) and cadmium (Cd) on the thick-shelled mussel, Mytilus coruscus. Our results indicated that PS-NPs exacerbated Cd accumulation via the "Trojan Horse" effect, leading to the collapse of antioxidant defenses. Crucially, histopathological analysis revealed a distinct pathological transition ranging from de

Morphological change and differential proteomics analysis of gill in Mytilus coruscus under starvation.

Mytilus coruscus is a dominant shellfish in the Yangtze estuary and its adjacent sea area. Food deprivation often occurs during their growth due to fluctuations in algal abundance caused by seasonal freshwater flushing and high-density aquaculture mode. To investigate the coping strategies of M. coruscus to starvation stress, electron microscopy and differential proteomic analysis were performed on the critical feeding organ gill of the mussels after 9 days of starvation. The electron microscopy results showed that the cilia of the mussel gills were dissolved, and the gaps between gill filamen

Alcalase-Assisted Mytilus edulis Hydrolysate: A Nutritional Approach for Recovery from Muscle Atrophy.

Muscle atrophy is a complex physiological condition caused by a variety of reasons, including muscle disuse, aging, malnutrition, chronic diseases, immobilization, and hormonal imbalance. Beyond its effect on physical appearance, this condition significantly reduces the quality of human life, thus warranting the development of preventive strategies. Although exercising is effective in managing this condition, it is applicable only for individuals who can engage in physical activities and are not bedridden. A combination of exercise and nutritional supplementation has emerged as a more advantag

Bioaccumulation of selected veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis).

Veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) are widely used within the fish farming industry to control sea lice infestations. There is concern that wild and farmed mussels in the vicinity to these fish farms may be exposed and subsequently bioaccumulate these chemicals, which could pose a threat to human health. To understand the fate of these chemicals in the environment, controlled laboratory exposures were performed to establish the uptake and depuration of selected VMPs in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). The VMPs included teflubenzuron, emamectin benzoate and deltamethrin. The effects of salin

Overview of the effects of heavy metals on the reproductive health of males in the genus Mytilus spp.

This review examines the reprotoxic effects of key heavy metals, specifically nickel, chromium, zinc, copper, mercury and cadmium, on the reproductive health of bivalve molluscs of the genus Mytilus spp. which serve as important bioindicators in marine ecosystems. Exposure to even sub-lethal concentrations of these metals induces oxidative stress, DNA damage and changes in chromatin structure, which are thought to affect fertility. These metals, known for their persistence and bioaccumulation, interfere with critical reproductive processes by also altering the functions of protamine-like prote

Transcriptomic and microbiota responses in Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to environmental concentrations of caffeine and cocaine.

The contamination of marine ecosystems by pharmaceuticals is an increasing concern due to their persistence and widespread use. This study investigated, for the first time, the effects of cocaine (COC) and caffeine (CAF), alone and in combination (MIX), on the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Mussels were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations for 28 days, followed by a 14-day recovery. Gene expression and microbiota analyses were conducted post-exposure and post-recovery. After 28 days, CAF and MIX exposure resulted in 61 and 45 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), respectively

Using Museum collections to assess the impact of industrialization on mussel (Mytilus edulis) calcification.

Mytilus edulis is a commercially and ecologically important species found along the east coast of the United States. Ecologically, M. edulis improves water quality through filtration feeding and provides habitat formation and coastal protection through reef formation. Like many marine calcifiers, ocean warming, and acidification are a growing threat to these organisms-impacting their morphology and function. Museum collections are useful in assessing long-term environmental impacts on organisms in a natural multi-stressor environment, where acclimation and adaptation can be considered. Using t

Evaluation of cellular and physiological alterations of cells from Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to benzisothiazolinone.

Benzisothiazolinone (BIT) is a preservative and antimicrobial agent widely used in various household and industrial products. It is readily detectable in pesticides, polishes, printing inks and detergents. This extensive use is reflected in a vast amount of this compound in the environment, which may cause toxic effects in organisms that come in contact with it. In light of the aforementioned context, this work aims to investigate the potential cellular and physiological impact on aquatic organisms through in vitro tests, utilising haemocytes and digestive gland (DG) cells derived from the Med

Antidepressants and their metabolites primarily affect lysosomal functions in the marine mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Antidepressants widely occur as emerging contaminants in marine coastal waters, with concentrations reported in the low ng/L range. Although at relatively lower levels with respect to other pharmaceuticals, antidepressants - fluoxetine (FLX) in particular - have attracted attention because of their striking effects exerted at low doses on marine invertebrates. In this study, the effects of four antidepressants including FLX, sertraline (SER), and citalopram, as members of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class, and venlafaxine (VEN) as a member of the serotonin and norepinephr

Behavioral alterations and gills damage in Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to an environmental concentration of delorazepam.

Psychoactive compounds, and benzodiazepines (BZPs) in particular, represent an important class of emerging pollutants due to their large (ab)use and high resistance to degradation. Nowadays it is known that sewage treatment does not completely eliminate these substances and, therefore, BZPs and their metabolites reach concern levels in most aquatic environments all over Europe, ranging from µg/L to ng/L. In this study, we investigated the effects of delorazepam on Mytilus galloprovincialis, a model organism in toxicity testing and a key species in coastal marine ecosystems. Given its psychoact

Effects of environmental concentrations of the fragrance amyl salicylate on the mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Amyl salicylate (AS) is a fragrance massively used as a personal care product and following the discharged in wastewaters may end up in the aquatic environment representing a potential threat for the ecosystem and living organisms. AS was recently detected in water of the Venice Lagoon, a vulnerable area continuously subjected to the income of anthropogenic chemicals. The lagoon is a relevant area for mollusc farming, including the Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) having an important economic and ecological role. Despite high levels of AS occurred in water of the Lagoon of Ven

Characterization of the Domoic Acid Uptake Mechanism of the Mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) Digestive Gland.

Cultures of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis are frequently affected by accumulation of the amnesic shellfish poisoning toxin domoic acid (DA). This species is characterized by a fast uptake and release of the toxin. In this work, the main characteristics of the uptake mechanism have been studied by incubation of digestive gland thin slices in media with different composition and DA concentration. DA uptake seems to follow Michaelis-Menten kinetics, with a very high estimated KM (1722 µg DA mL-1) and a Vmax of 71.9 µg DA g-1 h-1, which is similar to those found for other amino acids in inv

Effects of single and combined exposure to cocaine and benzoylecgonine on the oxidative status of Mytilus galloprovincialis.

The information concerning the effects of single and combined exposure to cocaine (COC) and its main metabolite, the benzoylecgonine (BE), towards marine organisms is still scant. Thus, the aim of this work was to compare the effects induced by 96 -hs exposure to a concentration of COC (500 ng/L) or BE (20 ng/L) and their mixture (500 ng/L of COC and 20 ng/L of BE) on Mytilus galloprovincialis. Oxidative stress biomarkers were applied on mussel gills and digestive gland, investigating changes in the amount of reactive oxygen species, activity of antioxidant (SOD, CAT and GPx) and detoxifying (

Lipid profiles in Himasthla elongata and their intermediate hosts, Littorina littorea and Mytilus edulis.

In this research, the lipid profiles in rediae and free-living larvae (cercariae) of the trematodes Himasthla elongata were studied. It was shown that the lipid profiles of cercariae and rediae reflect the selective accumulation of membrane phospholipids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. In addition, infected tissues' lipid compositions in the intermediate hosts Littorina littorea (whole organism) and Mytilus edulis (foot) were studied. Modifications in the molluscs' lipid compositions were mainly caused by the parasites' metabolic requirements, as the parasites are unable to engage in de novo
