Temporal Changes in Infection by Myxobolus nagaraensis in Rhinogobius (Gobiidae) in the Nagara River Basin, Central Japan, from the 1960s to the 2020s.

Myxobolus nagaraensis, a parasitic cnidarian, was first isolated from a freshwater goby of the genus Rhinogobius collected from the Nagara River system in central Japan and was described as a new species in 2007. This study investigated the changes in parasitism of Rhinogobius species by M. nagaraensis in the Nagara River Basin. Rhinogobius specimens, collected between 1967 and 2020 and stored at the Lake Biwa Museum and Gifu Prefectural Museum, were visually examined for the presence or absence of swelling of the abdomen or caudal peduncle specific to M. nagaraensis infestation. No swelling w

Phylogeny and comprehensive revision of mugiliform-infecting myxobolids (Myxozoa, Myxobolidae), with the morphological and molecular redescription of the cryptic species Myxobolus exiguus.

Mullets inhabit a wide range of habitats from tropical to temperate regions and play a critical role in their ecosystems. This commercially important fish group constitutes a significant source of food in several geographic regions, and the production of some species for consumption is an increasing trend. About 64 myxosporean species have been reported in mullets, some of which are cryptic, as is the case of Myxobolus exiguus, and M. muelleri. This paper provides, for the first time, a detailed and critical revision of the data available for myxobolids reported in mullets, determining the spe

Morphological, ultrastructural, and phylogenetic analysis of two novel Myxobolus species (Cnidaria: Myxosporea) parasitizing bryconid fish from São Francisco River, Brazil.

Twelve Myxobolus species have been previously described to parasitize Bryconidae fish in South America. Here, we describe two novel myxosporean species that parasitize economically important Bryconidae from the São Francisco River basin in Brazil. Myxospores morphometry, morphology, small-subunit ribosomal DNA - ssrDNA sequences, and other biological traits were used in the taxonomic analysis. Phylogenetic analysis was performed to assess the position of the new Myxobolus species among the closest Myxobolus/Henneguya. Myxobolus iecoris n. sp. was found infecting the liver of Salminus francisca

Some pathophysiological insights into ovarian infestation by Myxobolus sp. (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) in Clarias gariepinus (Clariids: Silurids) from Bénin (West Africa).

Mature female specimens of the catfish Clarias gariepinus originating from Ouémé River (Benin) were investigated into ovarian myxozoan parasites. Spores of Myxobolus sp. (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) were found encrusted in the whitish color oocytes which present fat dot aspect in the gonads. The pathological investigation by electron microscopy revealed that maturation and multiplication of spores induced lytic action, deformation and dysfunction of the oocyte internal structures. No host inflammatory reaction was observed, while yolk, lipid, mitochondria, and other oocyte components were degenerated

Effect of 80% ethanol or 10% formalin fixation, freezing at -20 °C and staining on Myxobolus (Myxosporea) spores to be deposited in parasitological collections.

The preparation of myxosporeans for the description of myxospores and their preservation as type material in parasitological collections show great variations. Most frequently, formalin and ethanol are used for fixation and Giemsa solution for staining spores. In this work, authors studied the effect of 80% ethanol and 10% formalin fixation, freezing at -20 °C and staining on the size and transparency of two Myxobolus species of cyprinid fishes, M. bramae and M. bliccae spore, and recommended a new method for the deposition of type material to parasitological collections in museums. Response of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss to exposure to Myxobolus cerebralis above and below a point source of infectivity in the upper Colorado River.

We exposed 9 wk old rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss to ambient levels of Myxobolus cerebralis infectious stages at 4 sites of suspected differing infectivity in the Colorado River. Exposure was estimated by periodic filtration of river water at each exposure location. After a 32 d exposure, the fish were held in the Colorado River at a common site for over a year. Resulting infection was evaluated by the presence of clinical signs (whirling behavior, cranial deformity/exophthalmia, and black tail), severity of microscopic lesions, and myxospore counts (8, 10, 12, and 14 mo post-exposure). Supplementary studies on Myxobolus tsangwuensis Chen, 1954 (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) infecting the gills of common carp Cyprinus carpio (L.): molecular and histological data.

Myxobolus tsangwuensis Chen, 1954 is a common parasite infecting the gills of common carp Cyprinus carpio (L.). It was described simply in the original description and its molecular data was absent, which makes the accurate diagnosis challenging. Here we supplemented its description based on the morphological, histological and molecular data. It was characterized by the presence of small round or ellipsoidal plasmodia in the gills of host and histology showed the plasmodia developed in the capillary network of the gill lamella. Mature spores of M. tsangwuensis were ellipsodal in frontal view a

Myxobolus mauriensis n. sp. Infecting Rib Cartilage of Young-of-the-Year River Herring in New Jersey: Notes on Pathology, Prevalence, and Genetics.

:  River herring populations, including Alosa pseudoharengus and Alosa aestivalis , have significantly declined as a result of anthropogenic factors throughout their range in eastern North America. To better understand the health of the species, parasite surveys were conducted in several New Jersey rivers. A novel myxozoan parasite, Myxobolus mauriensis n. sp., is described infecting the cartilage of pleural ribs in young-of-the-year fish. The parasite forms large polysporic plasmodia forming pseudocysts within the ribs, which extend into the musculature. Pathology associated with infection in

Light and electron microscopic studies on Myxobolus cotti el-Matbouli and Hoffmann, 1987 infecting the central nervous system of the bullhead (Cottus gobio).

Myxobolus cotti (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) is described as found in the central nervous system of the bullhead (Cottus gobio) caught in the Alpine lake Königssee and in a brook in the Bavarian Forest, Federal Republic of Germany (El-Matbouli and Hoffmann 1987). Aggregations of spores and polysporoblastic trophozoites compressed and replaced large areas of the white and grey matter of the brain and spinal cord. These aggregations may be surrounded by a thin, connective tissue capsule; in a few cases they were associated with loose infiltrates of glial cells. Neither conspicuous tissue reactions nor

Differential modulation of host immune genes in the kidney and cranium of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in response to Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae and Myxobolus cerebralis co-infections.

BACKGROUND: Most of the studies on fish diseases focus on single infections, although in nature co-infections occur more often. The two freshwater myxozoan parasites of salmonids, having high economic and ecologic relevance are Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Malacosporea), the etiological agent of proliferative kidney disease, and Myxobolus cerebralis (Myxosporea), the etiological agent of whirling disease. The present study aims to investigate immune modulation in rainbow trouts (Oncorhynchus mykiss) during single and co-infections by these parasites. METHODS: Fish were initially infected wi
