BACKGROUND: A cross-species jump was confirmed in 2018, when a novel recombinant myxoma virus (MYXV) (ha-MYXV) caused high mortality in Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) in the Iberian Peninsula.
METHOD: The aim of this study was to evaluate the main lesions, tissular distribution and target cells of ha-MYXV in Iberian hare. Gross postmortem examinations and histological and immunohistochemical studies to detect ha-MYXV were carried out in 28 animals that were confirmed as ha-MYXV positive by PCR.

BACKGROUND: Primary cardiac lymphomas are extremely rare entities (< 2% of cardiac tumours) and the most frequent histologic type is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Fibrin-associated DLBCL (FA-DLBCL) is a very unusual form of DLBCL associated with chronic inflammation, and only case reports and small series have been described. In the heart, it usually occurs in the context of a cardiac myxoma or cardiac prostheses and it is not bulk forming. These lymphomas frequently present with non-germinal center phenotype and are associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) type III latency.

It is an axiom of many parasitology texts that host-parasite systems coevolve toward a state approximating commensalism. While this hypothesis has an apriori intuitive appeal there is little empirical evidence to support it. The only documented case of a parasite evolving toward avirulence is the group selection of less virulent strains of the myxoma virus in the Australian rabbit population. It is hypothesized here that group selection also accounted for the appearance of variola minor in the Americas.
