Myxozoa is a class of the Phylum Cnidaria made up of endoparasites from aquatic habitats. The genus Ceratomyxa preferentially infects marine fish, with the gallbladder being the main site parasitized. This study aimed to describe a new species of Ceratomyxa found in this organ in Boulengerella cuvieri using morphological, morphometric characterization and phylogenetic analysis of 18S rDNA gene sequences. Specimens of B. cuvieri were collected, anesthetized, desensitized and biometric measurements were performed. The organs were analyzed under a stereomicroscope and fragments of internal organs

Myxozoans of the family Ceratomyxidae are common coelozoic parasites of marine, anadromous, and freshwater fish, and may also be found, less frequently, parasitizing the tissue of these hosts. The diversity and ecology of the freshwater species of the genus Ceratomyxa have been poorly investigated, leading to a knowledge gap that restricts the understanding of the distribution and prevalence of this group of parasites. In the present study, parasites were found inside vermiform plasmodia, characterised by oscillatory movements in the characiform species Hemiodus unimaculatus. The crescent-shap

Six types of sphaeractinomyxon are reported from the coelomic cavity of oligochaetes collected from the Minho River estuary in northern Portugal. Four new types are morphologically and molecularly described from freshwater species belonging to the genera Psammoryctides Hrabě and Potamothrix Vejdovský et Mrázek in the upper estuary, thus significantly increasing the number of known freshwater sphaeractinomyxon. In the lower estuary, sphaeractinomyxon types 8 and 10 of Rangel et al. (2016) are recorded infecting the marine oligochaete Tubificoides pseudogaster (Dahl). A single specimen of T. pse

Mullets inhabit a wide range of habitats from tropical to temperate regions and play a critical role in their ecosystems. This commercially important fish group constitutes a significant source of food in several geographic regions, and the production of some species for consumption is an increasing trend. About 64 myxosporean species have been reported in mullets, some of which are cryptic, as is the case of Myxobolus exiguus, and M. muelleri. This paper provides, for the first time, a detailed and critical revision of the data available for myxobolids reported in mullets, determining the spe

Mature female specimens of the catfish Clarias gariepinus originating from Ouémé River (Benin) were investigated into ovarian myxozoan parasites. Spores of Myxobolus sp. (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) were found encrusted in the whitish color oocytes which present fat dot aspect in the gonads. The pathological investigation by electron microscopy revealed that maturation and multiplication of spores induced lytic action, deformation and dysfunction of the oocyte internal structures. No host inflammatory reaction was observed, while yolk, lipid, mitochondria, and other oocyte components were degenerated

Ceratomyxa Thélohan, 1892 is one of the largest genera of the sub-phylum Myxozoa, and has a worldwide geographical distribution. Ceratomyxa species mainly infect the gallbladder of marine fish and rarely infect histozoically or coelozoically freshwater fish. In the present study, yellow catfish, Trachysurus fulvidraco (Siluriformes, Actinopteri) collected from the low reach of Yellow River was first found to be infected with an unknown Ceratomyxa species in their gallbladder which was identified to be new to science and nominated as Ceratomyxa huangheensis n. sp. by an integrative taxonomic ap

The genus Kudoa is an important group of parasites within the class Myxozoa, as some species infect a wide range of fish hosts and cause post-mortem myoliquefaction, resulting in significant economic losses. This study describes a new species of Kudoa in toadfish Batrachoides surinamensis. In 60 % of specimens of B. surinamensis collected in the eastern Amazon, elongated white plasmodia were observed in the swim bladder muscle. Subquadrate myxospores measuring 5.6 µm in length, 7.5 µm in width, and 5.5 µm in thickness were recorded, with four polar capsules measuring 2.5 µm in length and 1.5 µ

The intestinal myxosporean parasite Enteromyxum leei causes severe desquamative enteritis in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) (Teleostei) that impairs nutrient absorption causing anorexia and cachexia. In fish, as in terrestrial vertebrates, intestinal goblet cells are responsible for the adherent mucus secretion overlying epithelial cells, which constitutes a first line of innate immune defense against offending microorganisms but serves also as substrate and nutrient source for the commensal microflora. The secreted intestinal mucus of parasitized (n = 6) and unexposed (n = 8) gilthead sea

INTRODUCTION: Ceratomyxa Thélohan, 1892 is one of the largest genera under Myxosporea Butschli, 1881, and has a worldwide distribution, but little attention has been paid to myxosporean parasites from the Chinese seawaters, East China Sea.
METHODS: Morphology and molecular biology methods were combined for species identification and phylogenetic analysis.
RESULTS: A new coelozoic myxosporean species, Ceratomyxa siganicola n. sp., was found to infect the gallbladder of Siganus fuscescens (Houttuyn, 1782) (Perciformes, Siganidae) from coastal waters of Xiamen, East China Sea, China. Mature myx

Myxobolus allami sp. n. is described from the intestinal wall of the silvery black porgy, Sparidentex hasta (Valenciennes), off Saudi Arabian coast of Arabian Gulf. Two of 20 examined fish were found to be infected with irregular-shaped plasmodia 3-8 mm long × 2-3 mm wide. Mature myxospores are subspherical to elliptical in the valvular view and oval in the sutural view, and are 11-13 (12) µm long, 7-8 (7.5) µm wide and 10-12 (10.8) µm thick. Spores have relatively thin valves and mostly (~ 72%) end with short caudal appendages of ~3 µm long. The spores also have two polar capsules, which are

This study describes a co-infection of Kudoa islandica (Myxozoa) and Nucleospora cyclopteri (Microsporida) in farmed lumpfish, Cyclopterus lumpus L., in Norway. Several other parasites (Cryptocotyle sp., protozoan ciliates and Gyrodactylus sp.) were also found in gills. In June 2013, the mortality in a farmed lumpfish population increased to 65%. Lumpfish showed erratic swimming behaviour and loss of weight. At necropsy, nodules in the kidney were the only visible lesions. Histologically, all fish showed severe changes with gill inflammation and necrosis in the spleen, kidney and liver. Haemor

The Brazilian Amazon estuary is a highly dynamic environment, characterized by substantial organic matter input and a rich diversity of fish species that utilize this ecosystem for feeding and reproduction. Despite its ecological relevance, ichthyo-parasitological research in the region remains limited, particularly regarding the diversity of parasitic species within the class Myxozoa. Among the fish species for which parasitological data are still scarce is the Pacamã frogfish, Batrachoides surinamensis (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), a demersal species that feeds on small invertebrates and fish

Myxobolus tsangwuensis Chen, 1954 is a common parasite infecting the gills of common carp Cyprinus carpio (L.). It was described simply in the original description and its molecular data was absent, which makes the accurate diagnosis challenging. Here we supplemented its description based on the morphological, histological and molecular data. It was characterized by the presence of small round or ellipsoidal plasmodia in the gills of host and histology showed the plasmodia developed in the capillary network of the gill lamella. Mature spores of M. tsangwuensis were ellipsodal in frontal view a

A newly discovered myxosporean parasite was described from the gallbladder of Nemipterus virgatus Houttuyn, 1782 collected from the East China Sea. Mature myxospores are crescent-shaped with shell valves that taper gradually toward rounded ends. Each myxospore contained two sub-spherical polar capsules located near the anterior end, closely aligned along the suture line. The mature myxospores measured 6.2 ± 0.6 (5.4-6.9) μm in length and 44.8 ± 4.6 (38.5-53.1) μm in thickness. Polar capsules measured 2.8 ± 0.2 (2.4-3.1) μm in length and 2.3 ± 0.2 (1.9-2.6) μm in width, with polar filaments coi

A novel myxozoan parasite is identified and described from mudskipper, Boleophthalmus dussumieri, collected from a brackishwater ecosystem in Maharashtra, India. Ellipsomyxa boleophthalmi sp. nov. was found in the gallbladder of 58 of 60 fish examined (96.7%). The parasite formed disporous plasmodia that varied in size and shape, and the thin-walled, ellipsoidal and elongated myxospores measured 9.0-10.7 × 6.0-7.8 μm. The two, spherical polar capsules measured 2.7 μm in diameter and enclosed 3-4 coils of polar tubules. Histological observations of infected gallbladder revealed the attachment o

In the present study, 2 species of myxozoan parasites, the novel Ceratomyxa scophthalmi sp. nov. and Myxidium finnmarchicum, were documented from the gallbladder of Scophthalmus maeoticus inhabiting the Turkish Black Sea coast at Sinop. C. scophthalmi sp. nov. had mostly spherical, clavate, and fine-grained polymorphic plasmodia that ranged in diameter from 16.0 to 29.0 µm. Spores were arcuate with a convex anterior margin and concave posterior. Valves of spores were highly elongated and unequal in thickness with one valve 1.1-1.3 times thicker than the other. Valves narrowed gradually toward

BACKGROUND: Myxosporeans infecting amphibians, particularly Asian salamanders, remain poorly investigated. I conducted a parasitological survey of Japanese salamanders to investigate the occurrence of myxosporean infections.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A parasitological survey was conducted on 132 individuals representing 27 taxa (26 species and one hybrid taxon) of Japanese salamanders belonging to three families. The parasites obtained were examined morphologically using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and molecular analyses were performed using partial sequences of the

Macrognathus aculeatus is a commercially significant cultured fish in China. However, prior to this study, there had been minimal attention directed towards its myxosporean infection. The present study has identified a previously unrecorded species of Myxobolus found in the ovary of M. aculeatus. The mature spores were elliptical in the frontal view, and fusiform in the sutural view, measuring 13.0 ± 0.2 (11.5-14) μm in length, 6.4 ± 0.3 (6.0-7.2) μm in width, and 5.3 ± 0.2 (4.9-5.6) μm in thickness. The two equal polar capsules were pyriform, with a length of 4.5 ± 0.2 (3.5-4.7) μm and a widt
