Onychophagia, which refers to compulsive nail-biting behavior, is common among children and young adults. Onychophagia can cause destruction to the cuticle and nail plate, leading to shortening of nails, chronic paronychia, and secondary infections. Relatively uncommon effects include pigmentary changes, such as longitudinal melanonychia and splinter hemorrhages. We report a case of a young adult with longitudinal melanonychia, splinter hemorrhages, punctate leukonychia, and pterygium inversum unguis, concurrently induced by onychophagia. Importantly, patients usually do not report this behavi

Nail tic disorders are classic examples of overlap between the domains of dermatology and psychiatry. They are examples of body-focused repetitive behaviors in which there is an irresistible urge or impulse to perform a certain behavior. The behavior is reinforced as it results in some degree of relief and pleasure. Nail tic disorders are common, yet poorly studied and understood. The literature on nail tic disorders is relatively scarce. Common nail tics include nail biting or onychophagia, onychotillomania and the habit tic deformity. Some uncommon and rare nail tic disorders are onychoteiro

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) such as skin picking or scratching and nail biting can be physically and socially detrimental. Given the potential consequences associated with these behaviors, it is unfortunate this area has received relatively limited attention. The two purposes of the current study were (a) to determine the prevalence of BFRBs among typically developing persons and (b) to examine the contribution of reported somatic activity to the occurrence of BFRBs. Results indicated that 13.7% of the sample met criteria for at least one BFRB, of which the most common topography

Oral habits are an acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary. Oral habits such as thumb sucking, lip sucking, tongue thrusting, lip biting, nail biting, object biting, and bruxism have serious health consequences. Several etiological factors have been linked to the development of oral habits. In this article, a rare case of a scar on the lower lip, which occurred due to lip biting habit, has been reported.

BACKGROUND: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are highly prevalent conditions at the border of psychiatry and dermatology. Using a newly developed scale, the Generic BFRB scale (GBS-36), we aimed to compare 4 prominent BFRBs in terms of phenomenology, age at onset, and other illness-related aspects.
METHODS: A sample of 391 individuals with different forms of BFRBs completed the GBS-36, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (depression), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF global item (quality of life).
RESULTS: Most individuals showed multiple BFRBs (73.9%). Skin pic

Habit-tic nail deformity, onychophagia (also referred to as nail biting) and onychotillomania (also referred to as nail picking) are body-focused repetitive behaviors that can involve the nails and periungual skin. Patients with habit-tic nail deformity are typically unaware that repeatedly using their nail, often the adjacent index finger, to rub the proximal nail fold and its underlying matrix - usually of one or both of their thumbnails - is the cause of the longitudinal depressed groove that extends along the entire the nail plate. Nail biters usually bite multiple nails - most commonly on

The present cross-sectional case-control study aimed to determine if there is an association between specific oral behaviors, sleep bruxism (SB), awake bruxism (AB), and painful temporomandibular joint (TMJ) clicking. Ninety individuals were dived into three groups; Group 1 (n = 30): painful TMJ clicking; Group 2 (n = 30): painless TMJ clicking; and Group 3 (n = 30): control group. The following clinical data were studied: oral behaviors (unilateral chewing, gum chewing, nail biting, foreign objects biting, leaning with jaw against the hand, and sleeping in a position that pressures the jaw),

BACKGROUND: Temporo-mandibular disorders is a collective term used to describe problems involving muscles of mastication and temporomandibular joint. The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of temporo-mandibular disorders and its association with parafunctional habits in patients visiting department of dentistry, Patan Academy of Health Sciences.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 213 patients coming to Patan Academy of Health Sciences. A screening questionnaire recommended by American Association of Orofacial Pain was used to determine the signs and symptoms of temporo

Onychophagia and onychotillomania are common forms of nail-biting and nail-picking disorders, but there is insufficient literature documenting their comparison and coexistence. In fact, overlapping features can be involved in different nail self-injuries, and significant variations also exist. We conducted a retrospective study aimed at identifying differences between onychophagia and onychotillomania, and providing more detailed findings of both conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are common but often underdiagnosed and undertreated, with limited understanding of their development. The eight-item Generic Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior Scale-8 (GBS-8) provides a practical, transdiagnostic self-report instrument. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Turkish GBS-8 and to examine patterns of BFRBs in a clinical sample of adolescents and young adults.
METHOD: The sample included 362 adolescents and young adults aged 12-30 years with at least one subclinical or pathological BFRB. A

Caregivers in nine residential care institutions rated the occurrence of 15 stereotyped behaviors in 142 nonhandicapped children aged from 10 months to 11 years. The frequency and duration of each stereotypy as well as the typical situations in which it occurred were assessed. The most frequent stereotypies were thumbsucking, hair twisting, and body rocking in infants and young children; thumbsucking and making faces in preschool-age children; and nail biting/chewing in school-age children. Boys exhibited stereotypies more frequently than girls, and children with a suspected history of child a

Extraneous activities of either the mouth, tongue or the jaw comprise the oral parafunctional habits of the stomatognathic system. This denominated habit is expressed through bruxism, digit sucking, nail biting to name a few, have led to hypothesizing the possible relationship of evolution of occluso-facial abnormalities such as malocclusion thereby hindering the conventional developmental process. Hence, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence and the possible relationship of parafunctional oral habits with the types of malocclusions among 12-16 years old females in Jeddah, Saudi

The clinical features of nail dystrophies depend on the part of the nail that has been damaged. Due to the important functions of fingernails and toenails, any abnormality of the nail causes impaired function of the hand or foot. Moreover, the aesthetic aspect of the nail may affect employability, self-esteem, and interaction with other people. Because the nails are often difficult to treat, cosmetology may be an effective support to medical treatment. Nail cosmetics may help the patient to cope with his or her nail dystrophy while waiting for treatment to show its efficacy. It may also be the

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine to what extent malocclusion and parafunctional habits contribute to the development of signs and symptoms associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in schoolchildren with mixed dentition in Croatia in a sample of 338 children, aged 9 to 15 years.
METHODS: TMD signs and symptoms assessed by the clinician were joint function and pain, masticatory muscles tenderness, range of mandibular motion, and joint sounds. To evaluate subjective symptoms and parafunctions, children and parents were asked about the presence of headaches, jaw locking,
