INTRODUCTION: Neurocysticercosis is a common cause of seizures in low resource countries. There is a paucity of data regarding the extent of this infection in Namibia. There are multiple causes of First-time seizure including electrolyte abnormalities, infections, trauma, drugs, alcohol and many times no apparent cause can be found. We sought to describe the burden of Neurocysticercosis among individuals with a first-time seizure in Namibia.
METHODS: We recruited 221 patients with a First-time seizure who presented to the Intermediate Hospital Oshakati between August 2012 and March 2014. Pati

The problems women in peri-urban Namibia are faced with are multi-dimensional. Like women in other communities they face the pressure of having a number of responsibilities, namely working, being a wife and mother, taking care of their families and perhaps caring for aging parents. Sometimes the pressure can be too overwhelming to manage. As a result, many women become depressed. Studies on depression among black African women in Namibia could not be traced. It was therefore considered to find out how women suffering from depression from this part of the world tell their life stories. The purp

In Namibia, the prevalence of hypertension among women and men aged 35−64 years is high, ranging from 44% to 57%. In this study, we aimed to determine adherence and predictors to antihypertensive therapy in Khomas region, Namibia. A cross-sectional study was performed to consecutively sample 400 patients from urban and peri-urban settings in Namibia. Results were validated using the Hill-Bone Compliance to High Blood Pressure Therapy Scale. Crude associations between predictors of adherence and compliance were tested using the Pearson chi-square test. A multivariable logistic regression analys

The blister beetle (Coleoptera: Meloidae) fauna of Namibia is studied. The species are arranged within a catalogue containing information on their general distribution, including a list of localities and brief taxonomic remarks. Zoogeographic and ecological analyses were carried out and a photographic appendix, with images and maps of almost all Namibian species, is included. According to a chorological analysis, the Namibian blister beetle fauna appears to be zoogeographically distinct because of the dominance of western southern African elements. The faunistic levels of similarity among dist

BACKGROUND: Parenting children with learning disabilities requires a high level of knowledge and access to resources, information and services. In developing countries, however, these resources and services are not always available. Parents in Namibia, a developing country, therefore face challenges addressing children's learning and other developmental disabilities, including challenges related to preventative and supportive interventions.
OBJECTIVE: This research focuses on challenges faced by parents as they parent children with learning disabilities in Opuwo, Namibia.
METHOD: In-depth in

HIV testing remains an important part of HIV prevention and treatment programs. Interventions to encourage testing may be more effective if they can be tailored to audiences with different readiness for testing. We sought to determine characteristics differentiating people who had tested from those who had not but were interested, and people who were interested from people who had not tested and were not interested in testing. We analyzed survey data from 2671 adults in Namibia, investigating demographic, psychosocial, interpersonal, behavioral, and access to care-related factors that might di

A total of 23 blood samples from Red Hartebeest and 28 ticks of the subspecies Rhipicephalus evertsi were collected in Namibia during the summer 2003. For a Piroplasmida species, Theileria sp 95.7% of blood and 50.0% of tick samples (all R. e. mimeticus, none of R. e. evertsi were carrying the pathogen) were PCR positive. Sequencing showed infection from a re-emerging mild species of Theileria phylogenetically different from other African Theileria species such as Theileria parva, T. buffeli, T. annulata, T. taurotragi or T. mutans.

Earlier research on the parasites of wild animals in South Africa is reviewed and the findings of more recent research discussed. The life cycles of various gasterophilid and oestrid fly species are described and the seasonal abundance of their larvae in their zebra and antelope hosts is considered. The seasonal abundance of fleas, lice and ixodid ticks on their hosts is given and the role played by both small and large mammals and some birds in the maintenance of tick populations is described. Factors contributing to severe parasitism of wild animals are listed and the chemical and biological

Neosporosis is a leading cause of bovine abortions worldwide, with a substantial economic impact because of reproductive losses, costing the cattle industry billions of dollars annually. Despite the global significance of Neospora caninum, molecular studies on this protozoan parasite have yet to be conducted in cattle in Southern Africa, leaving a critical knowledge gap in countries like Namibia, where beef production is vital to the economy. This study aimed to detect latent N. caninum infections in beef cattle brain and heart muscle samples collected from abattoirs and blood samples from Neo

BACKGROUND: In the 21st century, understanding how population migration impacts human health is critical. Namibia has high migration rates and HIV prevalence, but little is known about how these intersect. We examined the association between migration and HIV-related outcomes using data from the 2017 Namibia Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (NAMPHIA).
METHODS AND FINDINGS: The NAMPHIA survey selected a nationally representative sample of adults in 2017. All adults aged 15-64 years were invited to complete an interview and home-based HIV test. Recent infection (<130 days) was measured us

OBJECTIVES: Optimal treatment success rates are critical to end tuberculosis in Namibia. Despite the scale-up of high quality directly observed therapy short-course strategy (DOTS) in Namibia, treatment success falls short of the global target of 90%. The objective of this study was to ascertain the predictors of treatment success rates under DOTS in Namibia to provide future direction.
METHODS: A nation-wide comparative analysis of predictors of treatment success was undertaken. Tuberculosis cases in the electronic tuberculosis register were retrospectively reviewed over a 10-year period, 20

Although there is evidence of high seroprevalence of antibodies to Babesia spp. in dogs in central Namibia, clinical babesiosis is rarely diagnosed. Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato, the vector of Babesia vogeli, is common in Namibia while Haemaphysalis elliptica, the vector of the highly virulent but morphologically indistinguishable Babesia rossi, has rarely been recorded, mainly in northern Namibia. On the basis of vector occurrence, clinical cases of canine babesiosis in Windhoek, central Namibia, have been ascribed to B. vogeli. DNA extracted from a blood smear made from a sick dog was

Social network analysis was used to examine the relationship between HIV/AIDS stigmatization, perceived risk, and centrality in the community network (via participation in community groups). The findings from respondents in Keetmanshoop, Namibia (N = 375) showed an interaction between stigma and risk perceptions\hose who perceived higher HIV risk and stronger HIV stigma participated in fewer community groups and participated in groups with members who participated less widely across the network. In contrast, those who perceived higher HIV risk and weaker HIV stigma participated more, and were

Anthrax has been studied intensively in Etosha National Park, Namibia since 1966; in addition, since 1975, mortality due to rabies and all other causes has been recorded, totalling 6,190 deaths. Standard diagnostic procedures demonstrated that at least 811 deaths (13%) were due to anthrax and 115 deaths (2%) were caused by rabies. Of the total number of deaths due to anthrax, 97% occurred in zebra (Equus burchelli), elephant (Loxodonta africana), wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) and springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) while 96% of rabies deaths occurred in kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), jac

The clinical features, incidence and pattern of jaw involvement, and seasonal occurrence in relation to 22 patients with Burkitt's lymphoma in the Cape province and Southwest Africa were analyzed. The mean age, male dominance, and pattern of organ involvement paralleled typical African Burkitt's lymphoma. Development of the patients' disease was more likely during the rainy season. The frequency and pattern of jaw involvement resembled typical African Burkitt's lymphoma. The frequency of jaw involvement was similar in white and nonwhite patients. Members of all racial groups had typical Africa

As droughts grow more frequent and severe, understanding how households respond to food insecurity is essential for shaping effective humanitarian and adaptation programs. Based on a household survey of 730 respondents across four regions in northern Namibia, this study explores who experiences food insecurity, the coping strategies households use to manage drought, and how these strategies relate to household characteristics and perceptions of future risk. The survey collected information on household demographics, income sources, access to food aid, and food security status one year after a

The purpose of this study was to identify, describe and conceptualize the present drivers of food choices and preferences of the Khwe San indigenous peoples by considering influences of their historical and cultural contexts. Data were collected in Eastern Bwabwata National Park in Namibia using a range of qualitative methods: semi-structured and structured interviews and free listing. The various drivers of food choices have been clustered into four levels of the ecological conceptual framework. Key factors, found to be driving participants' food choices, were the following: taste, hunger, he

BACKGROUND: The use of Indigenous Knowledge (IK) can help students to form schemas for interpreting local phenomena through the prism of what they already know. The formation of schemas related to HIV/AIDS risk perception and prevention is important for individuals to form local meanings of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The objective of this study was to explore the indigenous names and symptoms of HIV/AIDS among High School students in Namibia
METHODS: Focus group discussions were used to collect qualitative data on indigenous names and symptoms of HIV/AIDS from students in 18 secondary schools loc

Six juvenile male, one adult male, and three adult, female African lions (Panthera leo) from Etosha National Park, Republic of Namibia were presented for necropsy. Two of four adults and one of six juveniles had moderate numbers of gastric spiral bacteria. Additionally, four of four adults had sarcocysts. All juveniles had enteric Sarcocystis sp. oocysts, but no sarcocysts. The gastric spiral bacteria were located extracellularly in fundic and pyloric glands, and also apparently intracellularly within parietal cells in the fundic region. The organisms were 4 to 8 microns long, 0.63 micron wide

BACKGROUND: The level of rubella susceptibility among women of reproductive age in Namibia is unknown. Documenting the risk of rubella will help estimate the potential burden of disease in Namibian women and the risk of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) in infants, and will guide strategies for the introduction of rubella vaccine.
METHODS: A total of 2044 serum samples from pregnant Namibian women aged 15-44 years were tested for rubella immunoglobulin G antibody; the samples were obtained during the 2010 National HIV Sentinel Survey. The proportion of women seropositive for rubella was deter
