Biocompatibility and Carcinogenicity of Carbon Nanotubes as Biomaterials.

With the development of nanotechnology in recent years, there have been concerns about the health effects of nanoparticles. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are fibrous nanoparticles with a micro-sized length and nano-sized diameter, which exhibit excellent physical properties and are widely studied for their potential application in medicine. However, asbestos has been historically shown to cause pleural malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer by inhalation exposure. Because carbon nanotubes are also fibrous nanotubes, some have raised concerns about its possible carcinogenicity. We have reported that

Minimal inflammogenicity of pristine single-wall carbon nanotubes.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a novel synthetic material comprising only carbon atoms. Based on its rigidity, its electrical and heat conductivity and its applicability to surface manufacturing, this material is expected to have numerous applications in industry. However, due to the material's dimensional similarity to asbestos fibers, its carcinogenicity was hypothesized during the last decade, and indeed, we have shown that multi-wall CNTs (MWCNTs) of 50 nm in diameter are potently carcinogenic to mesothelial cells after intraperitoneal injection. Additionally, we suggested that inflammogenici

Biocompatibility of iron filled carbon nanotubes in vitro.

Due to their particular magnetic properties, nanoparticles of metallic iron are promising candidates for magnetic fluid hyperthermia when compared to the commonly used iron oxides. However, the difficulty of handling these structures in ambient conditions without oxidation hinders its practical application. In this work, iron filled carbon nanotubes non-covalently functionalized by human serum albumin are studied as potential agents for hyperthermia. Here the iron is encapsulated inside of the carbon shells and protected from reactions with its environment. Besides protecting the iron and biol

Functionalized carbon nanotubes in drug design and discovery.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been proposed and actively explored as multipurpose innovative carriers for drug delivery and diagnostic applications. Their versatile physicochemical features enable the covalent and noncovalent introduction of several pharmaceutically relevant entities and allow for rational design of novel candidate nanoscale constructs for drug development. CNTs can be functionalized with different functional groups to carry simultaneously several moieties for targeting, imaging, and therapy. Among the most interesting examples of such multimodal CNT constructs described in thi

Physical removal of metallic carbon nanotubes from nanotube network devices using a thermal and fluidic process.

Electronic and optoelectronic devices based on thin films of carbon nanotubes are currently limited by the presence of metallic nanotubes. Here we present a novel approach based on nanotube alkyl functionalization to physically remove the metallic nanotubes from such network devices. The process relies on preferential thermal desorption of the alkyls from the semiconducting nanotubes and the subsequent dissolution and selective removal of the metallic nanotubes in chloroform. The approach is versatile and is applied to devices post-fabrication.

IrO2-Decorated Titania Nanotubes as Oxygen Evolution Anodes.

In this work, we have used both plain titania nanotubes, TNTs, and their reduced black analogues, bTNTs, that bear metallic conductivity (prepared by solid state reaction of TNTs with CaH2 at 500 °C for 2 h), as catalyst supports for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Ir was subsequently been deposited on them by the galvanic replacement of electrodeposited Ni by Ir(IV) chloro-complexes; this was followed by Ir electrochemical anodization to IrO2. By carrying out the preparation of the TNTs in either two or one anodization steps, we were able to produce close-packed or open-structure nanotub

Parameters Affecting Interfacial Assembly and Alignment of Nanotubes.

Tangential flow interfacial self-assembly (TaFISA) is a promising scalable technique enabling uniformly aligned carbon nanotubes for high-performance semiconductor electronics. In this process, flow is utilized to induce global alignment in two-dimensional nematic carbon nanotube assemblies trapped at a liquid/liquid interface, and these assemblies are subsequently deposited on target substrates. Here, we present an observational study of experimental parameters that affect the interfacial assembly and subsequent aligned nanotube deposition. We specifically study the water contact angle (WCA)

Intercellular Communication in the Brain through Tunneling Nanotubes.

Intercellular communication is essential for tissue homeostasis and function. Understanding how cells interact with each other is paramount, as crosstalk between cells is often dysregulated in diseases and can contribute to their progression. Cells communicate with each other through several modalities, including paracrine secretion and specialized structures ensuring physical contact between them. Among these intercellular specialized structures, tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are now recognized as a means of cell-to-cell communication through the exchange of cellular cargo, controlled by a varie

Membrane Nanotubes Increase the Robustness of Giant Vesicles.

Giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) provide a direct connection between the nano- and the microregime. On the one hand, these vesicles represent biomimetic compartments with linear dimensions of many micrometers. On the other hand, the vesicle walls are provided by single molecular bilayers that have a thickness of a few nanometers and respond sensitively to molecular interactions with small solutes, biopolymers, and nanoparticles. These nanoscopic responses are amplified by the GUVs and can then be studied on much larger scales. Therefore, GUVs are increasingly used as a versatile research tool

Nanodispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes using dichloroethane.

In this paper we present a simple approach of nanodispersing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in a non-polar 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) solvent. After filtration with isopropanol and acetone, the purified SWCNTs were immersed in DCE, followed by sonication for about 15 hours. The samples were further centrifuged at 17,000 revolutions per minute for about 3 hours. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) demonstrated that the spin-coated nanotubes were mostly individual nanotubes with an average diameter of 1.6 nm and a length of about 250 nm. We also found that the presence of water, and the dry pro

Investigation of the Dissociation Mechanism of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube on Mature Amyloid-β Fibrils at Single Nanotube Level.

Amyloid fibrils originating from the fibrillogenesis of misfolded amyloid proteins are associated with the pathogenesis of many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases. Carbon nanotubes have been extensively applied in our life and industry due to their unique chemical and physical properties. Nonetheless, the details between carbon nanotubes and mature amyloid fibrils remain elusive. In this study, we explored the interplay between single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and preformed amyloid-β (Aβ) fibrils by atomic force microscopy at the sing

Effects of nitrogen-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes compared to pristine multi-walled carbon nanotubes on human small airway epithelial cells.

Nitrogen-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ND-MWCNTs) are modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with enhanced electrical properties that are used in a variety of applications, including fuel cells and sensors; however, the mode of toxic action of ND-MWCNT has yet to be fully elucidated. In the present study, we compared the interaction of ND-MWCNT or pristine MWCNT-7 with human small airway epithelial cells (SAEC) and evaluated their subsequent bioactive effects. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction suggested

Effect of the Nanotube Radius and the Volume Fraction on the Mechanical Properties of Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Aluminum Metal Matrix Composites.

By using the advantages of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), such as their excellent mechanical properties and low density, CNT-reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) are expected to overcome the limitations of conventional metal materials, i.e., their high density and low ductility. To understand the behavior of composite materials, it is necessary to observe the behavior at the molecular level and to understand the effect of various factors, such as the radius and content of CNTs. Therefore, in this study, the effect of the CNT radius and content on the mechanical properties of CNT-Al composites w

The role of the solvent and the size of the nanotube in the non-covalent dispersion of carbon nanotubes with short organic oligomers - a DFT study.

Among different dispersants of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), conjugated organic oligomers have the ability to interact strongly with SWCNTs and allow for effective dispersion in several organic solvents. Recently, we have carried out two computational investigations on the intermolecular interactions between conjugated organic oligomers and SWCNTs in order to gain insight into an important process of the non-covalent dispersion of carbon nanotubes with short oligomers. These studies highlighted the fact that two additional factors, namely, the effects of the solvent and the carbon n

Field-nanoconfinement coupling enhanced water desalination in carbon nanotubes.

Desalination based on carbon nanomembranes offers high water permeance and salt rejection, making them promising for addressing global freshwater shortages and energy demands in reverse osmosis (RO) desalination. Enhancing ion rejection by modulating the energy barrier for ion transport through wide carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a critical challenge for highly efficient desalination. We perform molecular dynamics simulations on water desalination using CNTs membranes, highlighting the key role of nanoconfinement coupled with an electric field. The results show that the electric field extends the

Resonant Terahertz Excitation of Confined Water in Carbon Nanotubes.

Terahertz (THz) radiation provides an effective means to probe and manipulate collective molecular dynamics in confined water. In this work, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are employed to investigate the frequency-dependent thermal response and microscopic structure of water confined in armchair-type double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). Water encapsulated in (3, 3)@(13, 13), (3, 3)@(18, 18), and (3, 3)@(23, 23) DWCNTs is subjected to linearly polarized THz electric fields applied either parallel or perpendicular to the nanotube axis, and the resulting temperature jump, ΔT, i

Solvent-Chirality-Gated Recognition of Carbon Nanotubes by Polysaccharides.

Chiral molecular recognition is typically achieved through static complementarity between chiral hosts and molecular guests. Dynamic control of such recognition through external stimuli remains an important challenge, particularly for interactions involving extended solid surfaces. Here we show that solvent chirality can act as an external control parameter that modulates the conformation of polysaccharide dispersants and thereby creates a tunable chiral recognition field for one-dimensional nanomaterials. By continuously varying the enantiomeric excess of chiral solvents, the conformation of

Advances in Alzheimer's disease control approaches via carbon nanotubes.

Global concern about Alzheimer's disease (AD) is justified by its increasingly younger onset and significant economic burden. AD leads to neurodegeneration and cognitive decline, ultimately resulting in loss of autonomy. Against this background, the field of biomedical research has seen a surge of interest in the potential of carbon-based nanomaterials, mainly due to their ease of degradation and high biocompatibility. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been extensively studied in AD, including developing biosensors, drug delivery systems, and molecular imaging. Here, we introduced the biosafety and
