Evaluation of: Zhang GY, Liu LZ, Wei WH, Deng YM, Li YZ, Liu XW. Radiologic criteria of retropharyngeal lymph node metastasis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated with radiation therapy. Radiology 255(2), 605-612 (2010). Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common nasopharyngeal neoplasm and has a high propensity for developing regional neck adenopathy. NPC arises most often in the fossa of Rosenmüller, and differs significantly from other head and neck cancers with respect to its incidence, etiology, clinical behavior and treatment. NPC is commonly associated with retropharyngeal nodes.

Nasopharyngeal cancer is a relatively rare cancer type, it is most common in southeast Asia and north Africa, it can be presented with nonspecific symptoms, making it challenging to diagnose. However, it remains a significant cancer to diagnose and treat early, as it can be aggressive and difficult to manage in its advanced stages. We report the case of a 48-year-old man who presented with isolated neck swelling, which was later found to be caused by multiple lymphadenopathies and suspected nasopharyngeal neoplasm. Imaging confirmed a large mass in the nasopharynx and bilateral cervical adenop

RATIONALE: Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) arising from a minor salivary gland is a rare malignant neoplasm. Most HCCC has been reported in the palate and tongue base, and only rarely in the nasopharynx. Here, we report a rare case of nasopharyngeal HCCC.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 44-year-old male who complained of otorrhea and aural fullness for 5 years was found to have a nasopharyngeal mass.
DIAGNOSES: HCCC by fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis.
INTERVENTIONS: Surgical resection plus concurrent chemotherapy and radiation therapy were administered.
OUTCOMES: The patient recove

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare vascular neoplasm, mostly occurring in adolescent males, and representing 0.05% of all head and neck tumors. Nevertheless, it is usually recognized as the most common benign mesenchymal neoplasm of the nasopharynx. Usually, it originates from the posterolateral wall of the nasopharynx and, although histologically benign, classically shows a locally aggressive behavior with bone destruction as well as spreading through natural foramina and/or fissures to the nasopharynx, nasal and paranasal cavities, spheno-palatine foramen, infratemporal fossa and

BACKGROUND: Glomangiopericytoma (GPC) is a rare sinonasal mesenchymal neoplasm with distinctive morphologic and molecular features, most commonly arising in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Occurrence in the nasopharynx is exceptionally uncommon and may create a substantial diagnostic challenge, particularly in long-term survivors of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after radiotherapy, in whom a newly detected nasopharyngeal mass is often clinically presumed to represent recurrent carcinoma. In this setting, diagnosis should rest on the combined assessment of growth architecture, cytologic

Nasopharyngeal adenocarcinoma is a rare malignancy that is classified into conventional/surface- and salivary-types. Herein we report the case of a 52-year-old male who presented with a right nasopharyngeal mass and right-sided hearing loss. Diagnostic imaging revealed a circumscribed 1.7 cm mass centred in the right antero-lateral aspect of the nasopharynx. A biopsy showed a gland-forming neoplasm that was in continuity with the surface epithelium. The tumor exhibited a nested to micro-papillary architecture, with mild cytologic atypia. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated diffuse staining for C

A malignant neoplasm localized to the lung is reported in a rather unusual host: a 40-year-old female, nonsmoker, of South-East Asiatic origin. The histology was of nasopharyngeal-like carcinoma character and ultrastructural examination confirmed a diagnosis of nonkeratinizing, poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. The clinicopathologic findings were more suggestive of a primary pulmonary origin than the manifestation of an occult nasopharyngeal primary. The immunological profile was highly suggestive of an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated epithelial neoplasia. This case might wide

INTRODUCTION: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a nasopharyngeal epithelial neoplasm that has distinct aetiological, epidemiological and biological characteristics compared to other head and neck malignancies. Patients usually present late due to non-specific symptoms and deep location of the tumour in the nasopharynx.
CASE REPORT: We would like to highlight a case of advanced NPC presenting with generalised lymphadenopathy, without the presence of an obvious nasopharyngeal mass that masqueraded as lymphoma in the initial stage.
CONCLUSIONS: NPC may share clinical features with other sinonas

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland tumors account for less than 5% of all neoplasms in the head and neck, with pleomorphic adenoma being the most common type. These typically arise in the palate, but we report a rare case of nasopharyngeal pleomorphic adenoma in an adult.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors conducted a case report and literature review.
RESULTS: The patient presented with unilateral otalgia, tinnitus, and aural fullness. Nasal endoscopy revealed a pedunculated mass adjacent to the left torus tubarius and he was treated with an excisional biopsy. Histologic evaluation demonstrated p

BACKGROUND: Basaloid-squamous carcinoma is a newly characterized, highly aggressive neoplasm occurring mostly in the base of tongue, hypopharynx, larynx, and esophagus. Its occurrence in the nasopharynx is rare.
METHODS: The clinicopathologic features of three cases of basaloid-squamous carcinoma of the nasopharynx are described and were studied for the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) by in situ hybridization for EBV-encoded small nuclear RNA (EBER). For comparison, basaloid-squamous carcinomas occurring in other sites also were studied for the presence of EBV.
RESULTS: EBER was detecte

INTRODUCTION: Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) of the nasopharynx is a rare plasma cell neoplasm, representing a small subset of head and neck malignancies. Its nonspecific symptoms often lead to diagnostic delays.
CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old female with non-specific progressive nasal obstruction and intermittent epistaxis, underwent complete endoscopic surgical excision using coblation. Post operative histopathology revealed Nasopharyngeal Extramedullary Plasmacytoma. The patient then received adjuvant radiotherapy (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy - VMAT), leading to a successful o

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma is a rare neoplasm in the sphenopalatine foramen. This tumour is histologically benign, but clinically malignant because it can erode the bone and surrounding structures, such as the pterygopalatine fossa, paranasal sinuses, and nasal cavity. It is a highly vascular tumour, sometimes from multiple Feeding arteries, and tends to bleed easily.
CASE PRESENTATION: In these cases, series, we reported four cases of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in children and one case in an elderly patient. The diagnosis was made by history taking, physical examination and Cer

The pattern of malignancies among indigenous Zambian children is described. The study, based upon an analysis of histopathology, autopsy and haematology records for a 10-year period (1980-1989), reveals a total of 525 neoplasms with a peak prevalence in the 5-9 year age group. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (17.5%) was the most common disorder followed by Burkitt's lymphoma (13.9%), retinoblastoma (11.4%), Kaposi's sarcoma (8.8%), Hodgkin's disease (5.9%), Wilms' tumour (5.9%), acute lymphocytic leukaemia (4%), rhabdomyosarcoma (3.4%), nasopharyngeal carcinoma (2.7%) and osteogenic sarcoma (2.1%). From 1965-1978 over 2,700 patients were admitted to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary or the Massachusetts General Hospital with carcinoma of the oropharynx, larynx or nasopharynx; only 36 of these patients were less than 40 years of age. Twelve patients had oropharyngeal carcinoma, 13 patients had laryngeal or hypopharyngeal carcinoma, and 11 patients had nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Analysis of these patients indicates an increased incidence of head and neck cancer in younger females. In patients less than age 31 there was no significant social history which contributed to early onset of

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a head and neck neoplasm that occurs in endemic numbers among people of southern Chinese descent. External beam radiation to the nasopharyngeal bed and primary draining lymph node echelons is the mainstay of treatment with concurrent cisplatin-based chemotherapy for more advanced disease. Detection of residual and/or recurrent NPC has important clinical implications, as salvage protocols are available. The review aims to increase awareness of the imaging features of NPC recurrences at local and distant sites using computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance i

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common malignant neoplasm of the head and neck which is harmful to human's health. Radiotherapy is commonly used in the treatment of NPC and it induces immediate cell cycle arrest and cell apoptosis. However, the mechanism remains unknown. Evidences suggested the activation of Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) pathway and Smad pathway are 2 of the important crucial mediators in the function of radiotherapy. In this study, we performed in vitro assays with human nasopharyngeal carcinoma CNE-2 cells and in vivo assays with nude mice to investigate the role o

CT demonstrates nasal anatomy extremely well. The intimate relationship of the nasal cavity to the cerebral, orbital, paranasal sinus, nasopharyngeal, and oral tissues is noted. Examples of benign and malignant neoplasms, inflammatory processes, including intrinsic and extrinsic mass lesions are utilized to demonstrate the value of CT in assessing the nasal cavity in conjunction with its surrounding tissues. Congenital and traumatic lesions also are demonstrated to the same advantage.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a locally aggressive benign vascular neoplasm, composed of vasogenic and myofibroblastic elements, accounts for 0.05-0.5% of all the head and neck neoplasms. There are very few case reports of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma involving the oral cavity; we report a case involving both the maxilla and mandible in a 17-year-old patient who reported with a large firm swelling on right side of face with recurrent epistaxis and headache. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed a large lobulated enhancing soft tissue mass, which was hypointense on T1-weighted image
