Stenting the nasopharyngeal isthmus by nasopharyngeal airway after correction of acquired total nasopharyngeal obstruction: surgical procedure and results.

The objective of this study is to describe a simple surgical procedure for management of acquired total nasopharyngeal obstruction in adults. Five patients were diagnosed as having complete nasopharyngeal obstruction over a 3-year period. Three patients previously underwent uvulopalatoplasty, while for the remaining two it was due to pharyngoscleroma. In all the patients, nasopharyngeal obstruction was at the level of the inferior edge of the soft palate. Two of the post-uvulopalatoplasty patients had recurrent obstruction after scar excision and topical application of mitomycin-C without sten

Is acetaminophen as effective as an antihistamine-decongestant-acetaminophen combination in relieving symptoms of acute nasopharyngitis in children? A randomised, controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficiency of drugs, which include antihistaminic-decongestant-acetaminophen agents versus only acetaminophen in symptomatic treatment of acute nasopharyngitis in children. METHODS: This clinical, randomized, controlled, single blind drug efficacy comparison research was conducted in 148 patients with acute nasopharyngitis between ages 2 and 12 years. After randomization, Group-1 consisted of cases (n: 86), which used OTC drugs [acetaminophen+diphenhydramine+pseudoephedrin] and Group-2 consisted of cases (n: 62), which used only acetaminophen. After receiving nasa

Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Cell Lines: Reliable Alternatives to Primary Nasopharyngeal Cells?

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a type of cancer that originates from the mucosal lining of the nasopharynx and can invade and spread. Although contemporary chemoradiotherapy effectively manages the disease locally, there are still challenges with locoregional recurrence and distant failure. Therefore, it is crucial to have a deeper understanding of the molecular basis of NPC cell movement in order to develop a more effective treatment and to improve patient survival rates. Cancer cell line models are invaluable in studying health and disease and it is not surprising that they play a critica

[A case of nasopharyngeal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumorafter radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor(IMT)is composed of the cable shape myofibroblastic cells which constitute soft tissue tumors.IMT is mostly encountered in the lung, its occurrence in the head and neck is relatively rare. Herein, we reported 1 case of IMT after radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)in the nasopharynx. The clinical symptoms and nasal pharynx imaging findings of IMT are similar to the NPC.Thus, the pathological and immunohistochemistrical examinations maybe helpful to make a correct diagnosis.

Nasopharyngeal brush biopsies and detection of nasopharyngeal cancer in a high-risk population.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an important tumor in many countries. Ethnic and regional factors strongly influence disease risk. NPC is usually diagnosed late in disease development, and 10-year survival rates are as low as 10%. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a possibly causative agent, is present in all cells of essentially all undifferentiated NPCs. We wished to determine the following: 1) whether an ambulatory nasopharyngeal brush biopsy could provide sufficient tumor cell DNA for the detection of EBV and 2) whether the detection of EBV in this locale reflects the presence of tum

Radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal cancer.

Nasopharyngeal cancers are a rarity in France. Radiotherapy is the cornerstone of treatment, frequently combined with chemotherapy. The technical modality of radiotherapy is complex in this disease, which is located in the vicinity of numerous organs at risk. In this article, we will present the updated guidelines of the French society for radiation oncology (Société française de radiothérapie oncologique, SFRO) on the indications, and technical details of radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal cancers.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare benign tumor arising predominantly in the nasopharynx of adolescent males. It is an aggressive neoplasm and shows a propensity for destructive local spread often extending to the base of the skull and into the cranium. Clinically, however, it is obscure with painless, progressive unilateral nasal obstruction being the common presenting symptom with or without epistaxis and rhinorrhea. Diagnosis of JNA is made by complete history, clinical examination, radiography, nasal endoscopy and by using specialized imaging techniques such as arteriogra

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a review.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is an umbrella term for a group of malignant epithelial tumors with different etiopathogenesis and a broad range of histopathological appearances. Some types have a dramatically skewed geographical and ethnic distribution and shows virtually 100% association with Epstein Barr virus. The field of other/contributing etiological factors are only partially known and recently a subset of this carcinoma has been linked to transcriptionally active Human Papilloma virus. As with all malignant tumors, the clinical stage of disease is of paramount importance. Despite loco-region

[Primary nasopharyngeal tuberculosis].

A 59-year-old female was complaining of sore throat, right otorrhea, and hearing impairment. There were no abnormal findings suggestive of pulmonary tuberculosis on her chest XP and CT. Nasopharyngoscopic examination detected a lesion coated with white mass on her nasopharynx, and a biopsy-specimen from this lesion revealed histopathological findings compatible with tuberculosis and the presence of acid-fast bacilli. PCR was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. Therefore, we diagnosed the case as primary nasopharyngeal tuberculosis and treated her by 4-drug combination regimen with

[Imaging of nasopharyngeal diseases].

This article gives an overview about the main nasopharyngeal pathologies and incidental findings, which a radiologist could be confronted with in daily practice. These include nasopharyngeal cysts, lymphoid hyperplasia, juvenile angiofibroma, carcinomas and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Typical radiological findings, possibilities for making a specific diagnosis, differential diagnosis and description of the spread of a neoplasm are the central points. Investigation techniques and clinical signs are briefly summarized.

Imaging of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is a unique disease that shows clinical behaviour, epidemiology and histopathology that is different from that of other squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now the preferred imaging modality in the assessment and staging of NPC, especially in relation to its superior soft tissue contrast, ability to demonstrate perineural tumour spread, parapharyngeal space, bone marrow involvement and its ability to show the involvement of adjacent structures, such as the adjacent paranasal sinuses and intracranial extension. Nasopharyngeal polyps in cats.

Nasopharyngeal polyps are non-neoplastic, inflammatory growths that arise from the middle ear or the eustachian tube and extend into the pharynx. The exact etiology of nasopharyngeal polyps is unclear; proposed etiologies include a response to chronic upper respiratory tract infection, chronic otitis media, ascending infection from the nasopharynx, or a congenital origin. Clinical signs usually relate to obstruction of the nasopharynx, with Horner's syndrome and head tilt being consistent with otitis media and otitis interna, respectively. Diagnostic tools include digital or visual examination

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare yet potentially destructive vascular tumor that typically affects adolescent males. While the etiology of these tumors remains unknown, great advances have been made in their diagnosis and treatment. When juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is diagnosed at an early stage, the prognosis is generally very good, as patients can be treated with a combination of pre-operative embolization and surgical resection. Advanced juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is much more difficult to treat, since orbital and intracranial involvement are common in the n

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma with dermatomyositis.

From 1976 to 1986, ten out of 1154 consecutive nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients were found to have dermatomyositis (DM). Their clinical features and treatment results were analyzed. The skin manifestation was typical of DM and myopathy occurred in seven patients. All the tumor on presentation were early stage and locoregional control after radiotherapy was satisfactory. All but one patient had DM prior to diagnosis of NPC. The prognosis of NPC was not affected by DM with survival being comparable to contemporary controls. The complication of radiotherapy were unusually severe. Chronic r
