INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted cancer screening and treatment delivery, but COVID-19's impact on tobacco cessation treatment for cancer patients who smoke has not been widely explored.
AIMS AND METHODS: We conducted a sequential cross-sectional analysis of data collected from 34 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers participating in NCI's Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I), across three reporting periods: one prior to COVID-19 (January-June 2019) and two during the pandemic (January-June 2020, January-June 2021). Using McNemar's Test of Homogeneity, we

The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registries have been a source of biospecimens for cancer research for decades. Recently, registry-based biospecimen studies have become more practical, with the expansion of electronic networks for pathology and medical record reporting. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens are now used for next-generation sequencing and other molecular techniques. These developments create new opportunities for SEER biospecimen research. We evaluated 31 research articles published during 2005 to 2013 based on author

The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Cancer Information Service (CIS) was founded in 1975 in accordance with a Congressional mandate requiring NCI to provide accurate, timely, and reliable cancer information to the American public as part of the National Cancer Act. For 50 years, the CIS has provided cancer patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and the public with high-quality information and resources on topics across the cancer control continuum, cancer clinical trials, and tobacco use cessation. Throughout its history, the CIS has adapted to changes in the health communication en

PURPOSE: Quitting smoking improves patients' clinical outcomes, yet smoking is not commonly addressed as part of cancer care. The Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I) supports National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers to integrate tobacco treatment programs (TTPs) into routine cancer care. C3I centers vary in size, implementation strategies used, and treatment approaches. We examined associations of these contextual factors with treatment reach and smoking cessation effectiveness.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used survey data from 28 C3I centers that reported tobacco trea

BACKGROUND: Alcohol, a known carcinogen since 1988, increases risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, breast, and colorectum. More than one half of US adults consume alcohol whereas about two thirds are unsure whether or unaware that alcohol intake is linked to cancer risk.
METHODS: Our objective was to survey awareness, beliefs, intentions, policies, practices, and goals/perceived responsibilities related to establishing/promoting actions to reduce alcohol-related cancer risks from leaders of 72 NCI-Designated Cancer Centers.
RESULTS: Sixty-one percent responded. Fo

The number of cancer survivors continues to increase in the United States due to the growth and aging of the population as well as advances in early detection and treatment. To assist the public health community in better serving these individuals, the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute collaborate triennially to estimate cancer prevalence in the United States using incidence and survival data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results cancer registries, vital statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics

Radiotherapy both promotes and antagonises tumour immune recognition. Some clinical studies show improved patient outcomes when immunotherapies are integrated with radiotherapy. Safe, greater than additive, clinical response to the combination is limited to a subset of patients, however, and how radiotherapy can best be combined with immunotherapies remains unclear. The National Cancer Institute-Immuno-Oncology Translational Network-Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer-American Association of Immunology Workshop on Combining Immunotherapy with Radiotherapy was convened to identify and prioritis

BACKGROUND: Women with endometrial or ovarian cancer experience a variety of symptoms during chemotherapy. Patient-Reported outcomes (PROs) can provide insight into the symptoms they experience. A PRO tool tailored to this patient population can help accurately monitor adverse events and manage symptoms. The objective of this study was to identify items in the National Cancer Institute's measurement system Patient-Reported Outcomes Version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (PRO-CTCAE®) appropriate for use in a PRO tool for a population of women with endometrial or ovarian c

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco cessation is a critical but challenging intervention for cancer patients. Our National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center instituted a tobacco cessation program in 2019. This manuscript reports on the first 2 years of our experience.
METHODS: Patients were referred to the program by their care team, and a certified tobacco treatment specialist contacted patients remotely and provided behavioral therapy and coordinated pharmacotherapy. We retrospectively captured data from patients with a cancer diagnosis referred to the tobacco cessation program. Uni

The NCI's Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I) has a specific objective of helping cancer centers develop and implement sustainable programs to routinely address tobacco cessation with patients. Sustaining tobacco treatment programs requires the maintenance of (1) core program components, (2) ongoing implementation strategies, and (3) program outcomes evaluation. NCI funding of C3I included a commitment of resources toward sustainability. This article presents case studies to illustrate key strategies in developing sustainability capacity across 4 C3I-funded sites. Case studies are organiz

Tobacco cessation after cancer diagnosis leads to better patient outcomes. However, tobacco treatment services are frequently unavailable in cancer care settings, and multilevel implementation challenges can impede uptake of new programs. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) dedicated Cancer Moonshot funding through the Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I) for NCI-Designated Cancer Centers to implement or enhance the implementation of tobacco treatment services. We examined a pragmatic application of the RE-AIM framework (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance) to e

The Action and Planning Committee on Breast Cancer Control was formed in 1970 by the American Cancer Society, based on their earlier successful experience with early-detection programs for uterine cancer. The original intention was to support 12 centers for 2 years, but with the passage of the Conquest of Cancer Act in 1971, and the consequent availability of more funds for cancer programs, the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute decided jointly to expand the program to 27 Breast Cancer Detection Demonstration Project Centers, with 280,000 women participating, who would b

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use can adversely affect cancer treatment outcomes, yet routine assessment has not been fully incorporated into oncology clinical trials. In 2012, rates of tobacco use assessment in actively accruing National Cancer Institute (NCI) trials were < 30% at enrollment and < 5% during follow-up, prompting efforts by the NCI and major oncology associations to promote and standardize tobacco assessment in oncology research and practice (including development of the Cancer Patient Tobacco Use Questionnaire [C-TUQ]). This study was conducted to re-examine assessment patterns in 202

Lymphoma represents a myriad collection of neoplasms that impact lymphocytes. This cancer often involves disrupted cytokine, immune surveillance, and gene regulatory signaling, sometimes with expression of Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). We explored mutation patterns for People experiencing Lymphoma (PeL) in the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Genomic Data Commons (GDC), which contains detailed, deidentified genomic data on 86,046 people who have/had cancer with 2,730,388 distinctive mutations in 21,773 genes. The database included information on 536 (PeL), with the primary focal sample being the n

PURPOSE: Major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) because of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are infrequent immune-related adverse events (irAEs) that comprise a spectrum of cardiac toxicities with variable manifestations. ICI-related MACEs can lead to significant morbidity and mortality, hence the need to better define presentations of MACEs and their association with noncardiac irAEs in ICI-treated patients.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective pooled analysis of MACE captured in the serious adverse events reporting database of the National Cancer Institute-Cancer Therapy Evaluation Progra

The endocrine system is highly susceptible to damage by high-dose chemotherapy and/or irradiation before hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) during childhood. The specific endocrine organs most affected by HCT include the thyroid gland, the pituitary, and the gonads. In addition, hormones that support development and stability of the skeletal system are also affected. Insufficiency of thyroid hormone is 1 of the most common late sequelae of HCT, and occurs more often in young children. Deficiency in the pituitary's production of growth hormone is a problem of unique concern to the pediatr

Tobacco use accounts for 30% of all cancer-related deaths worldwide and 20% in the US, despite effective, evidence-based interventions for reducing tobacco use and tobacco-related cancers and deaths. In 2012, to reduce the burden of tobacco-related cancer and associated population-level risks across Texas, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center initiated the EndTobacco® program to promote statewide cancer control activities. We created evidence-based initiatives, established selection criteria, and implemented actions involving policy, education, and tobacco treatment services. As a
