Relationship between Multiple Forms of Maltreatment by a Parent or Guardian and Adolescent Alcohol Use.

This study examined the effect of the co-occurrence of multiple categories of maltreatment on adolescent alcohol use. Data were from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health which used a nationally representative sample of adolescents (n = 14,078). Among those reporting any maltreatment, over one-third had experienced more than one type of maltreatment. Logistic regression models found that all types or combinations of types of maltreatment except physical-abuse-only were strongly associated with adolescent alcohol use, controlling for age, gender, race, and parental alcoholism. Parent-Child Connectedness and Long-Term Risk for Suicidal Ideation in a Nationally Representative Sample of US Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have addressed on the role of parent-child connectedness (PCC) on adolescents' risk for suicidal ideation from a longitudinal, developmental perspective. AIM: This study examined PCC during adolescence and risk of suicidal ideation into adulthood among a nationally representative sample of American adolescents. METHOD: The study includes 13,234 adolescents aged 11-18 from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) who were surveyed during adolescence (1994-1995) and then again in early adulthood (2008-2009). Multinomial logistic regress

Are stressful developmental processes of youths leading to health problems amplified by genetic polymorphisms? The case of body mass index.

Although previous research has documented the adverse influence of early socioeconomic disadvantage on youths' physical health outcomes and the increase in health inequalities over the early life course, little is known about genetically informed sequential life course developmental processes leading to health outcomes. Consistent with the life course-stress process perspective, we hypothesized that early socioeconomic adversity initiates a stress process over the early life course. This process involves the disrupted transition from adolescence to young adulthood, which increases the risk of

Child maltreatment in the United States: prevalence, risk factors, and adolescent health consequences.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of child maltreatment in the United States and examine its relationship to sociodemographic factors and major adolescent health risks. METHODS: The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health is a prospective cohort study following a national sample of adolescents into adulthood. The wave III interview, completed by 15 197 young adults in 2001-2002 (77.4% response rate), included retrospective measures of child maltreatment. We used these measures to estimate the prevalence of self-reported supervision neglect, physical

Maternal social status, early health capital, and young adults' economic attainment: Early life course investigation.

Using survey data collected from 12,278 adolescents and their mothers over 13 years in a nationally representative National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study examined how maternal social status influenced young adults' economic attainment over the early life course. We found that weight at birth and height at adolescence as early health capital mediated the influence of maternal social status on young adults' economic attainment. Also, adolescents' educational attainment and psychological vulnerabilities mediated the relation between early health capital and young adults' eco

Gendered Social Chains of Risk: Pathways of Childhood Maltreatment, Adolescent Peer Networks, and Depressive Symptoms.

Childhood maltreatment is a serious stressor affecting mental health directly and indirectly through relationships, creating social chains of risk. Adolescent peers are one key relationship in the early life course, but whether peer networks mediate associations between maltreatment and mental health or if such pathways differ by gender remains unclear. We conduct path analysis on survey data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (N = 9,118) to examine gendered chains of risk linking childhood maltreatment, adolescent peer networks, and depressive symptoms. Results

Whose Care Matters? The Protective Role of Perceived Care in the Long-Term Physical Health Consequences of Adolescent Loneliness.

INTRODUCTION: Loneliness has been associated with physical health outcomes, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). While much of the research has focused on older adults, less is known about whether loneliness during adolescence is related to CVD risk later in life. This study addresses this gap by investigating the relationship between adolescent loneliness and CVD risk in adulthood, as well as the moderating role of different sources of perceived care. METHODS: Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), this study estima

Resource profiles and suicide attempts in youth with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The issue of suicide among youth with disabilities transitioning into adulthood is a serious public health issue. In navigating this transition, youth with disabilities encounter unique obstacles that require careful consideration and support. This study aims to identify resource profiles among youth with disabilities and their association with suicide attempts in early adulthood. METHODS: Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), this study included 1,472 youth with disabilities. A Gaussian finite mixture model (GMM) was employed to identi

Does Alcohol Use Predict Violent Behaviors? The Relationship Between Alcohol Use and Violence in a Nationally Representative Longitudinal Sample.

The current study examined the relationship between alcohol and violence using a longitudinal survey of adolescents ages 11-26. Data were derived from 10,828 adolescents in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) Waves I-III. Survey logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between alcohol use and violence. Even after adjustment for baseline, consistent alcohol use predicted violence in young adulthood (OR =1.41; 95% CI [1.03, 1.91]); however, violence was not predictive of problematic alcohol use. Overall, consistent alcohol use appears to be a predict

Neighborhoods and infectious disease risk: acquisition of chlamydia during the transition to young adulthood.

Adolescents and young adults have the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the USA despite national priority goals targeting their reduction. Research on the role of neighborhoods in shaping STI risk among youth has increased in recent years, but few studies have explored the longitudinal effects of neighborhoods on STI acquisition during the adolescent to young adult transition. The aims of this study were to examine: (1) the longitudinal relationships between the neighborhood context (poverty, residential instability, and racial/ethnic concentration) of exposure during

Pathways from adolescent pregnancy to precarious employment: Distinguishing the effects of abortion, miscarriage, and live birth.

While adolescent pregnancy is widely recognized as a marker of early-life disadvantage, less is known about its long-term occupational consequences. This study examines the relationship between adolescent pregnancy experiences and precarious employment in adulthood, distinguishing between three pregnancy outcomes: abortion, miscarriage, and live birth. Using longitudinal data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we estimate school-fixed effects regression models to assess whether adolescent pregnancy is associated with greater labor market precarity. Peer influence decay and behavioral diffusion in adolescent networks: A simulation approach.

How far does peer influence spread through social networks before dissipating? This study investigates the diffusion of smoking behavior in adolescent friendship networks using longitudinal data from two schools (n = 3154 students) in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Using Stochastic Actor-Oriented Models, we simulate interventions targeting heavy smokers using various strategies (random, in-degree, eigenvector centrality) and coverage (10 to 100%). A new exponential decay model quantifies influence attenuation, revealing indirect peer influences, or spillover eff

Paternal Incarceration and Adolescent Social Network Disadvantage.

Previous research has suggested that adolescent peers influence behavior and provide social support during a critical developmental period, but few studies have addressed the antecedents of adolescent social networks. Research on the collateral consequences of incarceration has explored the implications of parental incarceration for children's behavioral problems, academic achievement, health, and housing stability, but not their social networks. Using network data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, I find that adolescents with recently incarcerated fathers are in socia
