End-of-Life Loneliness, Social Isolation, and Symptom Burden: A Nationally-Representative Study.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness (subjective feeling of lacking connection) and social isolation (objective deficit in number of relationships or contact with others) are common at the end-of-life and can be detrimental to quality of life. Investigating the association between symptoms and end-of-life loneliness and social isolation could help inform targeted interventions. METHODS: We used nationally-representative, cross-sectional Health and Retirement Study data, including adults > 50 years old (N = 2385) who died while enrolled. Respondents self-reported on validated loneliness and social isolation

Living alone as a social determinant of health: evidence from a national health survey.

The phenomenon of living alone has become an increasingly prevalent social reality in today's world. This situation affects individuals' living conditions and health in various ways. This study investigates whether living alone constitutes a social determinant of health status and aims to examine the socio-demographic factors associated with living alone. The study was based on the secondary analysis of the data from the 2022 Turkish Health Survey conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute. Data from 13 151 individuals were used in a cross-sectional design. Logistic regression analyses wer

Engaging Social Stakeholders in National Asbestos Research for Public Health: An Italian Experience.

Background: Asbestos and its impacts on the population worldwide are threats to the environment and public health, striking both countries that have banned asbestos, such as Italy in 1992, and those that continue its use. In Italy, asbestos‑affected communities have experienced diverse progress in their involvement in prevention and asbestos risk management. Objectives: Exploring social stakeholders' engagement in research projects on asbestos health impacts and discussing the benefits of the ongoing SEPRA project (Epidemiological Surveillance, Prevention and Research on Asbestos). Methods: A

A National Study of Adult Women Sexually Abused by Clergy: Insights for Social Workers.

Given the paucity of research on the experiences of women who are sexually abused by clergy as adults and the advent of the #ChurchToo movement in 2017, the results of a mixed-methods national study highlight the experiences of those who survived the abuse and report on what factors are most healing in their recovery. Internet-based surveys with both quantitative and qualitative items were completed by 159 respondents. Less than 10 percent reported receiving help and support from their congregation after they reported the abuse, and about half of the respondents were blamed for the abuse and i

Social Explanations of Lottery Play: New Evidence Based on National Survey Data.

This study examines the social contexts of gambling and analyzes social motivations for playing the lottery. We test three sociological approaches simultaneously: network effects, consumption theory, and strain theory. The data used (SOEP-IS, N = 5868 individuals) has several advantages beyond being a large-scale representative sample of the German population. With information on households, we can analyze social network effects while avoiding the problems of egocentric network data. Another benefit of the SOEP-IS is the panel structure. We use the panel structure to improve measurements of st

Social consequences of sleep disordered breathing on patients and their partners: a controlled national study.

We aimed to evaluate the total costs to patients and their partners of sleep apnoea and obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) and their treatment, as this is poorly described in families. Using data from the Danish National Patient Registry and other public databases, all patients and their partners with a diagnosis of sleep apnoea (n=30,278) or OHS (n=1562) were included. They were compared with age-, sex- and community location-matched citizens at a ratio 1:4 (120,506 and 6241 control subjects, respectively). Direct and indirect costs were evaluated for patients and their partners. Sleep ap

Prevalence of 19 Social Risks in a National Survey of Veterans Health Administration Patients.

BACKGROUND: Social risks (adverse social and economic conditions) exert greater impact on health than clinical care. The Veterans Health Administration (VA) conducts annual clinical screenings for food insecurity, housing insecurity, and intimate partner violence nationally, but less is known about the prevalence of a wider array of social risks among VA patients. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the prevalence of 19 social risks among VA patients. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey, designed with VA operational leaders, clinicians, researchers, and Veterans, was distributed via web and mail March 21-Ju

The Financial Toll of Social Determinants of Health on Orthopedic Trauma Care: A National Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDoH) are associated with increased healthcare costs across various conditions, yet their impact on orthopedic trauma remains understudied. Orthopedic injuries impose a significant financial burden on the healthcare system, but the extent to which SDoH contribute to hospitalization costs is not well established. This study evaluates the association between documented SDoH-related diagnoses and inpatient costs in orthopedic trauma using a nationally representative dataset. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study of the 2016-2021 National Inpati

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Social Work: Evidence for Impact?

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (hereafter CRPD) has provided a radical imperative for the reform of mental health and capacity legislation around the world. The interpretation of the CRPD has been controversial, ranging from the complete abolition of detention, forcible treatment, and substitute decision-making to accepting that elements of these measures need to be retained based on non-discriminatory criteria, additional safeguards, and a comprehensive shift towards supported decision-making. While the potential effects of the CRPD on mental health s

Social determinants of health and obesity: Findings from a national study of US adults.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between social determinants of health (SDOH) burden and overweight/obesity in a nationally representative sample of adults in the United States. METHODS: Data for 161,795 adults aged ≥18 years from the 2013 to 2017 National Health Interview Survey were used. A total of 38 SDOH were aggregated to create a cumulative SDOH score, which was divided into quartiles (Q1-Q4) to denote levels of SDOH burden. Prevalence of overweight and obesity was examined across SDOH quartiles in the total population and by age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Multinomial logi

Using social media to crowdsource collection of urine samples during a national pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown had a substantial impact on normal research operations. Researchers needed to adapt their methods to engage at-home participants. One method is crowdsourcing, in which researchers use social media to recruit participants, gather data, and collect samples. We utilized this method to develop a diagnostic test for Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS). Participants were recruited via posts on popular social-media platforms, and enrolled via a website. Participants received and returned a mail kit containing bladder symptom surveys and a

Validity and reliability of social anxiety disorder diagnoses in the Swedish National Patient Register.

BACKGROUND: Population-based administrative registers are often used for research purposes. However, their potential usefulness depends on the validity of the registered information. This study assessed the validity of the recorded codes for social anxiety disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia, in the Swedish National Patient Register (NPR). METHODS: The personal identification numbers of 300 randomly selected individuals with a diagnosis of SAD recorded in the NPR were obtained from the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. The medical files of these individuals were then reque

Social determinants of health and survivorship in parotid cancer: An analysis of the National Cancer Database.

BACKGROUND: Given the rarity of parotid cancer, there is relatively few data published regarding outcomes. Utilizing the large sample population of the National Cancer Database (NCDB), we aim to examine the relationship between two key social determinants of health, demographics and socioeconomic status (SES), and parotid malignancy survival rates. METHODS: Our analytic sample consists of patients with a diagnosis of primary malignancy of the parotid gland between 2004 and 2012 in the NCDB. We used univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazard models to evaluate the relationship betwe

Childhood social adversity and risk of depressive symptoms in adolescence in a US national sample.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood social adversity has been associated with an increased risk of depression and other psychiatric disorders in adolescence and early adulthood. However, the role of timing and accumulation of adversities has not yet been established in longitudinal studies. We examined the association between childhood adversities and adolescent depressive symptoms, and the impact of timing and accumulation of adversity. METHOD: Longitudinal data were obtained from the Child Development Supplement to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (n=2223), a nationally representative survey of US famil
