This study examined how Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) described their experiences and impacts of COVID-19-related racism, contextualized in a broader history of sociopolitical oppression. Guided by Cheng, Kim, et al. (2021) tripartite model of collective psychosocial resilience, we further hypothesized that COVID-19-related racism might be a catalyst for AANHPIs developing critical consciousness to resist racism. AANHPI adults (n = 448; Mage = 26.43) were asked how their lives were impacted by anti-Asian racism during the COVID-19 pandemic and completed sur

BACKGROUND: Asian Americans (AA), Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (NHPI), collectively referred to as AANHPI, are heterogeneous populations with varying cancer risks across ethnic groups. Incidence rates and trends are examined for eight AA groups (Asian Indian/Pakistani, Chinese (including Taiwanese), Filipino, Japanese, Kampuchean, Korean, Laotian, and Vietnamese) and three NHPI groups (Native Hawaiian, Guamanian/Chamorro, and Samoan).
METHODS: Annual cancer incidence from 21 Surveillance, Epidemiology, End Results (SEER) registries and population denominators from 2000-2022 were us

Objectives: Assess the relationship between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (NH/PI) compared to white older adults. Methods: Data were from the 2011-2015 Health Outcomes Survey. HRQOL was assessed using the Veterans RAND 12-Item Survey, composed of physical (PCS) and mental component scores (MCS). Lower scores represent worse health. Multivariate regression was conducted to estimate PCS and MCS mean score differences related to self-reported CVD (coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure

BACKGROUND: Restoration of a neutral mechanical axis (MA) is important to the success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). While known differences are present between Asians and Caucasians regarding native knee alignment, it is unknown whether such differences exist amongst Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islanders (NHPI) or if utilizing a fixed distal femoral cut of 6° can consistently achieve a neutral MA in these minority racial groups. This study examines the preoperative deformities presented by Asians, Caucasians, and NHPI, and the resulting knee alignment achieved following TKA when a fixed

Although cigarette smoking in the general U.S. population has decreased considerably over the past several decades, prevalence rates among Native Hawaiian Pacific Islanders (NHPI) have remained elevated by comparison with other groups. The aggregation of NHPI smoking data with that of Asians has drawn attention away from the serious smoking problems that NHPIs experience, thus, limiting funding, programs, and policies to reduce tobacco-related health disparities in their communities. In California, community-based organizations (CBOs) have played a major role in supporting the state's comprehe

BACKGROUND: People with epilepsy (PWE), particularly Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI), face significant cardiometabolic disparities. This study characterized the "triple burden" of obesity, diabetes, and tobacco use across White, Asian, and NHPI PWE in Hawaii and identified factors associated with seizure control.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 403 adult PWE (41.2% White, 24.1% Asian, 34.7% NHPI) was conducted at a Hawaii-based clinic. Multivariable logistic regression compared comorbidity profiles and identified factors associated with poor seizure control (breakthroug

BACKGROUND: The burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing in the aging population. However, little is known about CVD risk factors and outcomes for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander (NH/PI) older adults by disaggregated subgroups.
METHODS: Data were from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services 2011-2015 Health Outcomes Survey, which started collecting expanded racial/ethnic data in 2011. Guided by Andersen and Newman's theoretical framework, multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the prevalence and determinants of CVD r

OBJECTIVE: To compare frequencies of risk factors and pregnancy outcomes in ethnic groups versus the combined total of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations.
METHODS: Using linked birth and fetal death certificate and maternal hospital discharge data (California 2007-2018), we estimated frequencies of 15 clinical and sociodemographic exposures and 11 pregnancy outcomes. Variability across 15 AANHPI groups was compared using a heat map and compared to frequencies for the total group (n = 904,232).
RESULTS: AANHPI groups varied significantly from each other

OBJECTIVES: Physical activity (PA) can help individuals maintain physical function and independence. The association between PA and functional limitations (FL) has not been explored in the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) population. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between PA and FL among NHPI adults (age ≥ 45 years) living in the United States.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional data from the 2014 NHPI-National Health Interview Survey (N = 628) was used to create three constructs of FL based on responses from the Functioning and Disability Survey Module: needing equipm

OBJECTIVE: Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers account for approximately 24% of all cancer deaths in the United States (US). Demographic and socioeconomic status (SES) factors have been associated with mortality in GI cancers. However, the associations between GI cancer mortality and neighborhood SES (nSES) among non-Hispanic Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations in California have not been investigated. This study examined GI cancer mortality rates by nSES among AANHPI adults in California.
METHODS: The California Cancer Registry, part of the population-based S

Veterans experiencing homelessness have elevated rates of traumatic brain injury (TBI) diagnoses. There remains limited research on subsets of homeless Veterans, including Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) Veterans. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) electronic medical records of 724 752 Veterans who accessed Veterans Health Administration (VHA) homeless services from January 2005-December 2018 were examined. Of the total sample, 1177 identified as NHPI, with comparator samples of non-NHPI (n=723 575) and White (n=418 085) Veterans also generated. Rates of TBI were compared between

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent comorbidities among patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), and its burden is disproportionately higher in Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (ANHPI) populations. However, the incidence and risk factors for diabetes among ANHPI HNC patients remain unknown. The aim of our study was to examine the incidence and risk factors of developing Type 2 diabetes among older (≥ 66 years of age) ANHPI HNC patients in the United States, as well as differences across ANHPI subgroups. Using the SEER-Medicare linked database, we identified Non-Hispanic

BACKGROUND: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations have diverse cultural, immigration, and sociodemographic characteristics. Aggregated data could mask substantial differences in substance use between cultural subgroups in this population. Yet, studies examining substance use among the AANHPI population are limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe cigarette, cannabis, and alcohol use among AANHPI adults by cultural subgroup and sex.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 3411 AANHPI respondents of a multilingual national survey "COMPASS" during December 20

BACKGROUND: Vast differences in barriers to care exist among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) groups and may manifest as disparities in stage at presentation and access to treatment. Thus, we characterized AANHPI patients with stage 0-IV colon cancer and examined differences in (1) stage at presentation and (2) time to surgery relative to white patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We assessed all patients in the National Cancer Database (NCDB) with stage 0-IV colon cancer from 2004 to 2016 who identified as white, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Native Hawaiian, Korean,

PURPOSE: Determine sociocultural influences on dietary behavior, body image, weight loss, and perceptions of the cultural appropriateness of a meal-timing intervention design and menu among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) women at risk of endometrial cancer.
METHODS: Six 90-min videoconference focus groups among NHPI women (n = 35) recruited by a community champion in Utah. Eligible women were aged ≥ 18 years at risk of endometrial cancer (i.e., BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, history of non-insulin-dependent diabetes or complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia) had a working cell phone capable o

Tobacco product use rates among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NHPI), Asian American, and Filipino American young adults in Hawai'i have risen rapidly in recent years following the introduction of electronic nicotine delivery systems. Though some research has examined tobacco use correlates for these demographics of young adults, research examining protective factors, such as cultural connectedness, is lacking. Additionally, research that disaggregates Asian Americans from Pacific Islanders is scarce, despite the differing risk and protective factors that have been determined for each group

Although Asian/Pacific Islanders are considered a single ethnic/racial category in national studies, Native Hawaiians/other Pacific Islanders (NHOPIs) and Asians show marked disparities in health outcomes and risk behaviors, including substance use. Currently, knowledge regarding the psychosocial mechanisms by which NHOPI ethnicity is associated with increased substance use, compared with Asian or White, is limited, especially among emerging adults. The present study tested a model in which the relationship between NHOPI ethnicity and higher substance use (i.e., current tobacco, alcohol, marij

There is limited information on the prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI) and non-fatal suicidal self-directed violence (NF-SSDV; e.g., interrupted attempts, suicide attempts) among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) veterans, a population in which suicide rates have disproportionately increased. Using population-based weighting, the present study examined the prevalence of SI and NF-SSDV among AANHPI veterans (n = 552), overall and disaggregated between Asian American (AA) and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) veterans, and compared to non-AANHPI veterans

The suicide rate among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Veterans increased from 2001 to 2020. Identifying regions where suicide rates are elevated and increasing among AANHPI Veterans would inform targeted prevention efforts for members of this cohort. We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of 377,833 AANHPI Veterans to examine suicide rates and methods (2005-2019) by United States (US) region and over time (2005-2009, 2010-2014, 2015-2019), using US Veteran Eligibility Trends and Statistics and Joint DoD/VA Mortality Data Repository data.
