[Natural history of ovary cancer].

Ovary cancer is a disease charged of paradigms and a serious health problem. It's important to know its natural history, because has a multifactor origins, and understanding its behavior since risk factors until patient's death because metastatic disease is a challenger for oncology group. In this work we made a bibliographic, analytic review that brings up concepts related to its origin, evolution, risk factors, preclinical horizon, and clinical symptoms until the death of patient.

Natural history of eosinophilic gastroenteritis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is a rare gastrointestinal disorder; little is known about its natural history. We determined the clinical features and long-term outcomes of patients with EGE. METHODS: We reviewed files from 43 patients diagnosed with EGE who were followed from January 1988 to April 2009. The diagnosis was made according to standard criteria after other eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders were excluded. We analyzed data on initial clinical presentation and long-term outcomes. RESULTS: EGE was classified as mucosal, subserosal, or muscular in 44%, 39

Natural history of homonymous hemianopia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the characteristics of spontaneous recovery of homonymous hemianopia (HH). METHODS: The authors reviewed medical records of all patients with HH confirmed by formal visual field testing and seen in follow-up in their service between 1989 and 2004. Clinical characteristics, causes, neuroradiologic definition of lesion location, final outcome, and evolution of the visual field defects were recorded. The associations among final visual field defect outcome, time from injury, and clinical features were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 254 patients with 263 HH were included in

Natural history of Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is a unique neurodevelopmental disorder, with onset of hypotonia, autistic tendency, and abnormalities of fine finger movements and gross movements of the arms in early infancy. Clinical features include specific age-dependent symptoms. Studies of early and late signs correlated locomotive dysfunction to language disability and stereotypy to regression of higher cortical functions. Studies of sleep parameters revealed early hypofunction of brainstem aminergic neurons and late occurrence of hypofunction of dopaminergic neurons, followed by receptor supersensitivity. The syndrome's

Natural history of venous thromboembolism.

Most deep vein thromboses (DVTs) start in the calf; however, thrombi that remain confined to the calf rarely cause leg symptoms or are associated with symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE). The probability that calf DVT will extend to involve the proximal veins, and subsequently cause PE, increases with the severity of the initiating prothrombotic stimulus and if this stimulus persists. Although acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) usually presents with either leg or pulmonary symptoms, most patients have thrombosis at both sites at the time of diagnosis. Treated proximal DVTs resolve slowly, and

Natural history of primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism has evolved into a disorder that is largely asymptomatic. Nevertheless, there is ample evidence of target organ effects even in asymptomatic patients. Recent data suggest that the disease is stable in most asymptomatic patients. Little change is observed in biochemical parameters or bone mineral density over time. A subgroup of asymptomatic patients shows biochemical evidence of disease progression, although, in the author's series, no overt clinical complications developed. Surgical cure is associated with biochemical normalization and increased bone density. Sever

Natural history of intestinal carcinoids.

Historically, carcinoids are a morphologically distinct class of rare intestinal tumours that behave less aggressively than the more common intestinal adenocarcinomas. Some authors restrict the term carcinoid to intestinal endocrine tumours, and others include a large variety of neuroendocrine tumours. Within the gastrointestinal tract, carcinoids are most commonly found in the appendix, followed by the distal small bowel, rectum and stomach. In the vast majority of cases, the carcinoid syndrome is associated with carcinoid tumours of the small intestine that have metastasised to the liver. Ep

Natural history of hepatitis C.

Ten years after the discovery of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and its association with NANB hepatitis as a major cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, our knowledge of the natural history of hepatitis C is still limited. The asymptomatic course of the disease in most patients, its slow and silent progression and heterogeneous outcome and the widespread use of interferon therapy during the past decade explain why many questions are still unsolved. The changing epidemiological pattern of HCV and the significant contribution of several cofactors to the severity of liver disease also complicate

Natural history study of pseudoachondroplasia.

Pseudoachondroplasia (PSACH) is a well-characterized autosomal dominant dwarfing condition. A great deal of information is available about orthopedic complications, but little is known about extraskeletal complications in adulthood. This study was undertaken to delineate the natural history of PSACH at all ages. Seventy-nine individuals responded to an extensive questionnaire that included information about deformities, operations, general health, chronic diseases, and reproduction. PSACH individuals were ascertained through the University of Texas Medical Genetics patient population, a geneti

Natural history of multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common idiopathic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. The distinction between MS and other benign or fulminant inflammatory demyelinating disorders is based on quantitative, rather than qualitative, differences in chronicity and severity. Primary progressive MS may differ from relapsing-remitting MS in MRI lesion frequency, immunogenetic profile, responsiveness to immunosuppressive treatment, and histology. In 60% of patients, MS begins as a relapsing-remitting disease and evolves secondarily into a progressive neurological illness. Life expe

Natural history of hepatitis C.

With advances in tools for the diagnosis of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, it has become easier to evaluate the natural course of hepatitis C. Although HCV infection initially occurs in adult individuals, in most patients with acute hepatitis C (68%) it develops into chronic hepatitis. Once chronic hepatitis is established, the rate of spontaneous cure of the liver disease is very rare (below 2%). The duration from the onset of acute hepatitis until the time of diagnosis of cirrhosis of the liver and of hepatocellular carcinoma is about 20 and 30 years, respectively. The long-term clinical

Natural history of phobic anxiety.

The characteristics of those with phobic anxiety--anxiety with or without avoidance of specific fear-provoking situations--seen in family practice have not been previously described. However, patients with agoraphobia--extreme avoidance of fear-provoking situations--are frequently seen in the general health sector. In addition, panic attacks, which are spontaneous episodes of intense anxiety associated with at least four autonomic symptoms that build rapidly in intensity, are believed to be antecedent to phobic anxiety. This secondary analysis used 29 patients with panic attacks. During a stru

Natural history of indeterminate colitis.

The long-term outcome of patients with a pathological diagnosis of indeterminate colitis on a colectomy specimen was investigated. The case records of 46 such patients operated on for inflammatory bowel disease between 1960 and 1983 were reviewed. Using the preoperative clinical information, pathological and radiological reports, it was possible to divide the patients into three groups: group 1, probable Crohn's disease (19 cases); group 2, probable ulcerative colitis (11 cases); and group 3, indeterminate colitis (16 cases). The patients were followed for a minimum of 2.5 years (median 10, ra
