Reconstructing contact and a potential interbreeding geographical zone between Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans.

While the interbreeding of Homo neanderthalensis (hereafter Neanderthal) and Anatomically modern human (AMH) has been proven, owing to the shortage of fossils and absence of appropriate DNA, the timing and geography of their interbreeding are not clearly known. In this study, we applied ecological niche modelling (maximum entropy approach) and GIS to reconstruct the palaeodistribution of Neanderthals and AMHs in Southwest Asia and Southeast Europe and identify their contact and potential interbreeding zone during marine isotope stage 5 (MIS 5), when the second wave of interbreeding occurred. Architecture of the nasal complex in neanderthals: comparison with other hominids and phylogenetic significance.

Although paranasal sinus configuration has occasionally been the focus in analyses of the phylogenetic relationships of various primates, other elements of the region of the nasal fossa--in particular, the turbinals--have received far less attention. A preliminary study of Neanderthal cranial morphology revealed the presence of an apparently unique configuration of the lateral wall of the nasal cavity: namely, in the region in which in Homo sapiens the anterior extremity of the maxilloturbinal (also referred to as the inferior nasal concha) articulates with the internal surface of the maxilla

Growth of Neanderthal infants from Krapina (120-130 ka), Croatia.

Modern humans have a slow and extended period of childhood growth, but to what extent this ontogenetic pathway was present in Neanderthals is debated. Dental development, linked to the duration of somatic growth across modern primates, is the main source for information about growth and development in a variety of fossil primates, including humans. Studies of Neanderthal permanent teeth report a pace of development either similar to recent humans or relatively accelerated. Neanderthal milk teeth, which form and emerge before permanent teeth, provide an opportunity to determine which pattern wa

Neanderthal hand and foot remains from Moula-Guercy, Ardèche, France.

The hand and foot remains from Moula-Guercy cave (Ardèche, France) comprise 24 specimens of Eemian age (ca. 120 ka). The specimens include primarily complete elements, which are rare among the Moula-Guercy postcrania. The hand remains have several characteristic Neanderthal traits including a laterally facing (parasagittally oriented) second metacarpal-capitate articulation, a short styloid process, a wide proximal articular surface on the third metacarpal, and absolutely expanded apical tuberosities on the distal hand phalanges relative to modern humans. The foot remains include several incom

Insights into Neanderthal development, childbirth, and locomotion from the Palomas and Dederiyeh pelves.

The human pelvis reflects evolutionary compromises among childbirth, bipedal locomotion, and other factors such as pelvic floor stability and thermoregulation. However, limited fossil evidence has hindered understanding of how these factors shaped pelvic morphology in Neanderthals, our closest extinct relatives. Here, we present new virtual reconstructions and morphometric analyses of nearly complete Neanderthal pelves from Sima de las Palomas del Cabezo Gordo (Spain) and Dederiyeh Cave (Syria), comparing them with other Neanderthals and modern humans. We find that Neanderthal and human pelves

Why reproduction has probably been very problematic in Neanderthals: The fabulous history of (pre)eclampsia.

Preeclampsia and eclampsia, unique to human reproduction, represent the first disease documented in written history over 5000 years ago, yet their etiology remains elusive in 2026. These disorders, exclusive to Homo sapiens among 4300 mammal species, may have posed an even greater reproductive challenge to Neanderthals, potentially contributing to their poor fecundity. Arising from incomplete deep trophoblast invasion into maternal spiral arteries, essential for nourishing the energy-demanding fetal brain, they lead to placental insufficiency and fetal growth restriction (FGR). In humans, ecla

A Genetic Risk Variant Associated With the Risk of Primary Biliary Cholangitis Is Inherited From Neanderthals.

BACKGROUND: Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) is an autoimmune cholangiopathy with polygenic architecture and unknown aetiology. Evidence links Neanderthal-derived genetic variants to autoimmune conditions; however, their contribution to PBC susceptibility remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: We investigate whether archaic alleles influence PBC risk. DESIGN: Genotype data from four PBC cohorts were analysed: CANUK (4615 cases, 9233 controls), OLD IT (444 cases, 901 controls), NEW IT (255 cases, 579 controls) and MAYO (891 cases, 621 controls). The first preserved nasal cavity in the human fossil record: The Neanderthal from Altamura.

The nose of Neanderthals and its possible adaptation to harsh climatic conditions is a longstanding matter of debate in paleoanthropology. Here, we present and describe the complete inner nasal structures of the early Neanderthal skeleton from Altamura, southern Italy. It represents evidence hitherto unavailable, both for this species and the human fossil record in general, and sheds light on the possible influence of respiratory adaptations on the characteristic Neanderthal facial morphology. Part of the debate has revolved around inner nasal traits proposed as unique adaptations (autapomorph

The evolutionary origin of the collective unconscious and the appeal of research on Neanderthals and other ancient humans.

Why does research on Neanderthals attract public attention far beyond its immediate scientific relevance? Such fascination may reflect more than intellectual curiosity; it may involve the activation of deep symbolic structures that Carl Jung termed the collective unconscious. Integrating evolutionary biology, genomics, paleoanthropology, and psychology, I address a question Jung did not explicitly pose: when, along the human evolution, did the collective unconscious originate? I argue that this structure emerged gradually rather than suddenly. Homo erectus established a cognitive floor charact

A bone tool used by neanderthal for flaying carcasses at the Abri du Maras (France).

Bone tool use is a hallmark of hominin behavioral evolution, yet its significance in Pleistocene contexts remains underexplored. We present a multi-method analysis of a bone fragment from Abri du Maras (Marine Isotope Stage 5, France), integrating qualitative use-wear assessment with quantitative 3D surface texture analysis via confocal microscopy and discriminant modeling. Results indicate that smoothing on the tool's tip is anthropogenic in origin rather than taphonomic, and originated from repeated contact with soft tissues, consistent with carcass flaying. This function diverges from the c

Neanderthal Cranio-Cervical Features: Morphological Integration and Functional Evaluation of Their Early Appearance.

Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) and their direct ancestors are characterized by a number of derived cranial and postcranial morphological features. Many of these traits first appear in European Middle Pleistocene populations, likely as a result of adaptation and/or genetic drift. According to the "accretion model," this accumulation of traits was shaped by repeated extreme glacial conditions and associated demographic bottlenecks. However, the functional significance of many of these features-particularly those related to the cervical spine, basal cranium, mandible, and face-remains contr

A Neanderthal haplotype introgressed into the human genome confers protection against membranous nephropathy.

Class 2 HLA and PLA2R1 alleles are exceptionally strong genetic risk factors for membranous nephropathy (MN), leading, through an unknown mechanism, to a targeted autoimmune response. Introgressed archaic haplotypes (introduced from an archaic human genome into the modern human genome) might influence phenotypes through gene dysregulation. Here, we investigated the genomic region surrounding the PLA2R1 gene. We reconstructed the phylogeny of Neanderthal and modern haplotypes in this region and calculated the probability of the observed clustering being the result of introgression or common des

In situ observations on the dentition and oral cavity of the Neanderthal skeleton from Altamura (Italy).

The Neanderthal specimen from Lamalunga Cave, near Altamura (Apulia, Italy), was discovered during a speleological survey in 1993. The specimen is one of the most complete fossil hominins in Europe and its state of preservation is exceptional, although it is stuck in calcareous concretions and the bones are mostly covered by calcite depositions. Nevertheless, it is possible to carry out some observations on craniodental features that have not previously been described. In this work, we present an account of the oral cavity, made possible by the use of a videoscope, which allowed us to reach so

Neanderthal behaviour, diet, and disease inferred from ancient DNA in dental calculus.

Recent genomic data have revealed multiple interactions between Neanderthals and modern humans, but there is currently little genetic evidence regarding Neanderthal behaviour, diet, or disease. Here we describe the shotgun-sequencing of ancient DNA from five specimens of Neanderthal calcified dental plaque (calculus) and the characterization of regional differences in Neanderthal ecology. At Spy cave, Belgium, Neanderthal diet was heavily meat based and included woolly rhinoceros and wild sheep (mouflon), characteristic of a steppe environment. In contrast, no meat was detected in the diet of

A decorated raven bone from the Zaskalnaya VI (Kolosovskaya) Neanderthal site, Crimea.

We analyze a radius bone fragment of a raven (Corvus corax) from Zaskalnaya VI rock shelter, Crimea. The object bears seven notches and comes from an archaeological level attributed to a Micoquian industry dated to between 38 and 43 cal kyr BP. Our study aims to examine the degree of regularity and intentionality of this set of notches through their technological and morphometric analysis, complemented by comparative experimental work. Microscopic analysis of the notches indicate that they were produced by the to-and-fro movement of a lithic cutting edge and that two notches were added to fill

Differences in childhood stress between Neanderthals and early modern humans as reflected by dental enamel growth disruptions.

Neanderthals' lives were historically portrayed as highly stressful, shaped by constant pressures to survive in harsh ecological conditions, thus potentially contributing to their extinction. Recent work has challenged this interpretation, leaving the issue of stress among Paleolithic populations highly contested and warranting in-depth examination. Here, we analyze the frequency of dental enamel hypoplasia, a growth disruption indicator of early life stress, in the largest sample of Neanderthal and Upper Paleolithic dentitions investigated to date for these features. To track potential specie

Reconstructing the Neanderthal Eustachian Tube: New Insights on Disease Susceptibility, Fitness Cost, and Extinction.

Neanderthals are among the best studied and yet most enigmatic fossil human groups with aspects of their anatomy and functional morphology remaining poorly understood. We present the first anatomical reconstruction of the Neanderthal cartilaginous Eustachian tube (CET), a vital component of the upper respiratory tract and nexus for the middle ear and postnasal airway. The Eustachian (auditory, pharyngotympanic) tube, comprised of a bony and cartilaginous (CET) portion, is integral to normal physiological functions such as middle ear aeration and pressure equilibration. Findings indicate that N
