Neonatal near miss (NNM) refers to a newborn who almost died in the neonatal period and is often perceived as part of a spectrum that includes stillbirth and neonatal death. NNM audits might improve recognition of risk factors and substandard care, facilitate benchmarking and inform prevention strategies to improve perinatal outcomes. This review shows that available NNM definitions are inconsistent and vary widely. This is likely to undermine the development of effective prevention strategies and global comparisons. Expert opinion may help reaching a consensus, thus enabling targeting of the

BACKGROUND: Combined with perinatal mortality review, neonatal near-miss (NNM) audit has the potential to inform strategies to better prevent adverse perinatal outcomes. Nonetheless, there is lack of standardised definitions of NNM and limited evidence of implementation of NNM audits.
AIM: To describe definitions of NNM and assess current approaches and attitudes toward perinatal mortality and morbidity audit.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Online survey from December 2021 to February 2022, with a mix of Likert scales, polar, pool, multi-choice, and open-ended questions, disseminated through nationa

PURPOSE: (1) To evaluate the association between immigration background and the occurrence of maternal near miss (MNM). (2) To identify medical co-factors, health-care utilization, and health-care disparities as explanations of a possibly higher risk of MNM among immigrants.
METHODS: We compared perinatal outcomes between immigrant women (first- or second-generation) versus non-immigrant women, delivering at three maternity hospitals in Berlin, Germany, 2011-2012. Near-miss events were defined as: HELLP syndrome, eclampsia, the occurrence or threat of uterine rupture, postpartum hemorrhage (P

OBJECTIVES: The World Health Organization has recommended investigating near-misses as a benchmark practice for monitoring maternal healthcare and has standardized the criteria for diagnosis. We aimed to study maternal morbidity and mortality among women admitted to a general intensive care unit during pregnancy or in the postpartum period, using the new World Health Organization criteria.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 158 cases of severe maternal morbidity were classified according to their outcomes: death, maternal near-miss, and potentially life-threatening conditions. The health in

BACKGROUND: Continuity and coordination of care are core principles of high-quality primary health care. Optimising continuity and coordination improves maternal satisfaction. However, their association with morbidity and mortality outcomes is unclear. The obstetric near-miss approach can be used to investigate whether continuity and coordination influences the occurrence of a severe maternal outcome.
AIM: To compare self-reported continuity and coordination of care between obstetric near-miss survivors and those without near miss during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum.

INTRODUCTION: The neonatal near-miss cases are subject to factors that are major causes of early neonatal deaths. For every death, more newborns suffer a life-threatening complication. Nearly 98% of neonatal death unduly existed in developing countries. Though there were few prior studies in other regions, they failed in identifying the factors of NNM. Besides, there has been no prior study in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed to assess factors associated with neonatal near-miss.
METHODS: A case-control study was employed on a total of 252 cases and 756 controls using a systematic r

INTRODUCTION: The high rate of maternal mortality among Black women in the United States continues to gain attention; yet research has not yet fully illuminated the precursors to these events, most impactful among them being "maternal near misses." A maternal near miss occurs when a woman nearly dies but survives a complication that occurred during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy. Researchers have focused on reviewing patient medical records after sentinel maternal events to help determine major contributors to them; however, qualitative studies with near-m

BACKGROUND: Postpartum spontaneous vulvar hematoma is a rare complication of childbirth that can potentially cause maternal death if not managed properly and in a timely manner. We present the case of maternal near miss secondary to postpartum hemorrhage secondary to vulvar hematoma after home delivery in a 28-year-old para IV mother from rural Ethiopia. The case was surgically managed under spinal analgesia. The mother and her newborn were discharged on the fourth postprocedure day.
CONCLUSION: Neglected and inappropriately managed postpartum vulvar hematoma can cause significant maternal mo

BACKGROUND: A maternal near-miss (MNM) refers to a woman who presents with life-threatening complications during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy but survived by chance or due to the standard care she received. It is recognized as a valuable indicator to examine the quality of obstetrics care as it follows similar predictors with maternal death. Ethiopia is one of the sub-Saharan African countries with the highest rate of maternal mortality and morbidity. Thus, studying the cause and predictors of maternal near-miss is vital to improving the quality of obste

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) presenting solely as fever is very rare. Usually, it manifests with typical features such as visual problems, headache, jaw claudication, or it can be associated with polymyalgia rheumatica. We present a case of a patient with GCA who presented only with prolonged fever. The cause of fever could not be initially identified in spite of a comprehensive workup. The patient was started on steroids for presumed GCA resulting in the resolution of fever. It is of paramount importance to consider GCA in the differential diagnosis of fever of unknown origin. BACKGROUND: The concept of neonatal near miss has been proposed as a tool for assessment of quality of care in neonates who suffered any life-threatening condition. However, there are no internationally agreed concepts or criteria for defining or identifying neonatal near miss. The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review of studies and markers that are able to identify neonatal near miss cases and predict neonatal mortality.
METHODS: Electronic searches were performed in the Medline, Embase and Scielo databases, with no time or language restriction, until December 2014. The t

BACKGROUND: In recent years, Tanzania has significantly reduced maternal mortality rates; however, pregnant women in Tanzania still face severe health risks and complications. The rate of maternal near misses is nearly 60% higher in Tanzania compared to other low-income countries. Women who survive severe complications during pregnancy or childbirth may experience long-lasting adverse effects, such as poor physical health, impaired sexual function, psychological distress, and a decreased quality of life. Therefore, our research aimed to understand the lived experiences of Tanzanian women who s

BACKGROUND: Australia has a maternal mortality ratio of 6.8/100000 live births, a rate akin to other developed countries and consistent with the high level care provided within the Australian health care system. With maternal mortality at very low levels assessment of severe maternal morbidity is increasingly being used as an indicator of quality of care and to identify areas for improvement in maternity services. The WHO maternal 'near miss' criteria is a standardised tool has been increasingly used worldwide to assess maternal morbidity and standards of maternity care. The aim of this study
