The role of the deep cervical extensor muscles in multi-directional isometric neck strength.

Clinical management of whiplash-associated disorders is challenging and often unsuccessful, with over a third of whiplash injuries progressing to chronic neck pain. Previous imaging studies have identified muscle fat infiltration, indicative of muscle weakness, in the deep cervical extensor muscles (multifidus and semispinalis cervicis). Yet, kinematic and muscle redundancy prevent the direct assessment of individual neck muscle strength, making it difficult to determine the role of these muscles in motor dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of deep cervical exte

Morphological characteristics of the posterior neck muscles and anatomical landmarks for botulinum toxin injections.

PURPOSE: Cervical dystonia is a common movement disorder for which botulinum toxin (BoNT) is the first choice treatment. Injecting the specific neck muscles can be challenging because of their thin morphology and deep locations. We, therefore, designed a study to investigate the locations of the posterior neck muscles to help the physician predict the locations of the targeted neck muscles and to protect the vertebral vessels from injury during deep injections. METHODS: The posterior neck region was divided into four quadrants by imaginary lines passing vertically and transversely through the

Anatomy-guided injections of botulinum neurotoxin in neck muscles: how accurate is needle placement?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In cervical dystonia, the accuracy of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) injections may influence the response to the treatment. METHODS: We used ultrasound to evaluate the accuracy of anatomy-guided injections of BoNT in the neck muscles. RESULTS: A total of 56 consecutive patients and 332 injections were evaluated. The overall accuracy was 76.6%. The lowest accuracy (67.9%) was observed for the splenius capitis muscle. CONCLUSIONS: Anatomic guidance of BoNT injections in the neck muscles is often inaccurate. Imaging guidance may improve the accuracy of BoNT injections in

The Effect of an Orthotic Device for Balancing Neck Muscles During Daily Office Tasks.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at evaluating the acute effect of the combined and single use of two orthotic devices (neck balance system [NBS] and lumbar support [LS]) on muscle activity of neck and back muscles during typical computer working tasks. BACKGROUND: An excessive activation of neck muscles could threaten the balance between agonist and antagonist muscles, resulting in a lower stability of the head and possibly leading to neck pain. At present, no study evaluated the effect of a specific orthotic device in reducing neck muscles activation. METHODS: Surface electromyography (sEMG) fr

The effect of three different head-neck positions on the average EMG activity of three important neck muscles in the horse.

The Knowledge of muscle activity in common head-neck positions (HNPs) is a necessary precondition for making judgements on HNPs. The aim of the study was to record the surface electromyography activities of important muscles of the horse's neck in various HNPs. The electrical activities of the m. splenius, brachiocephalicus and trapezius were recorded on both sides. Five horses, both with and without a rider, were examined in all three gaits on both hands in three different HNPs: a 'free' position, a 'gathered' (head higher, neck more flexed) position with the noseline in front of the vertical

Suboccipital muscles in the cat neck: morphometry and histochemistry of the rectus capitis muscle complex.

The morphometry, histochemistry, and biomechanical relationships of rectus capitis muscles were examined in adult cats. This family of muscles contained six members on the dorsal, ventral, and lateral aspects of the upper cervical vertebral column. Three dorsal muscles (rectus capitis posterior major, medius, and minor) formed a layered complex spanning from C1 and C2 to the skull. Rectus capitis posterior major was composed predominantly of fast fibers, but the other two deeper muscles contained progressively higher proportions of slow fibers. One ventral muscle, rectus capitis anterior major

Intramuscular hemangioma with hemorrhagic transformation arising from paraspinal muscles of posterior neck: A case report.

RATIONALE: Hemangiomas are usually found in cutaneous or mucosal layers, less than 1% of hemangiomas develop in skeletal muscles. Intramuscular hemangioma (IH) in the head and neck areas is relatively infrequent, accounting for 15% of IH. Most of them are identified as a benign mass, and rapid changes in size or internal bleeding are rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 60-year-old female patient presented with a 2-week history of sudden onset posterior neck pain. There was no neurological deficit except limited neck motion due to pain. The palpable mass was noted on the paraspinal muscles of cervicotho

The Changes in Pharyngeal Constrictor Muscles Related to Head and Neck Radiotherapy: A Systematic Review.

It is well known that radiation damage of the pharyngeal constrictor muscles, the glottic larynx, and the supraglottic larynx may lead to dysphagia, an unwanted effect of head and neck radiotherapy. The reduction of radiotherapy-induced dysphagia might be achieved by adaptive radiotherapy. Although the number of studies concerning adaptive radiotherapy of head and neck cancer is continuously increasing, there are only a few studies concerning changes in dysphagia-related structures during radiotherapy. The goal of this review is to summarize the current knowledge about volumetric, dosimetric, a

[Radiation-Induced Radiculopathy with Paresis of the Neck and Autochthonous Back Muscles with Additional Myopathy].

Radiation-induced tissue damage is caused by ionizing radiation mainly affecting the skin, vascular, neuronal or muscle tissue. Early damages occur within weeks and months while late damages may occur months or even decades after radiation.Radiation-induced paresis of the spine or the trunk muscles with camptocormia or dropped-head syndrome are rare but have already been described as long-term sequelae after treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma. The differential diagnosis includes limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, fascioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) or lysosomal storage diseases (e. g. Aci

The effect of eccentric exercise-induced delayed onset neck muscle soreness on force steadiness and the spatial distribution of neck extensor muscle activity.

This study investigated the effects of eccentric exercise-induced delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) on neck extensor muscle behaviour and force output, examining force steadiness and the spatial distribution of splenius capitis (SCap) and upper trapezius (UT) muscle activity. Twenty healthy individuals completed three laboratory sessions (baseline, 24 h and 48 h post-exercise), where participants performed submaximal isometric neck extension and flexion tasks (20%, 50%, and 70% of their maximum voluntary contraction). High-density surface electromyography was used to examine bilateral SCap

[Neck pain due to tendonitis of the longus colli muscle].

Two patients presented to Accidents and Emergency with severe neck pain: a 70-year-old woman with acute, severe neck pain, which had developed a few days after outpatient resection of her left lingual tonsil. The patient was suspected to have spondylodiscitis. The other patient, a 54-year-old woman, was referred with severe neck pain and suspected meningitis. In both women, the pain was diagnosed as acute calcifying tendonitis of the longus colli muscle. This benign condition can present to many different specialities. Both patients responded well to treatment with NSAIDs. Acute calcifying ten

Neck muscle vibration in full cues affects pointing.

Vibration of the dorsolateral neck stimulates proprioceptors that are normally active during head movement; this induces a visual illusion of contralateral motion and displacement of a stationary target seen against a homogenous background. The spatial constancy explanation of the illusion argues that it occurs because information about head movement is necessary for accurate egocentric localization of visual objects. Accurate egocentric localization, in turn, is necessary for the success of object-directed motor action, but previous studies failed to find evidence that vibration affects point

Neck muscle fatigue affects postural control in man.

We hypothesised that, since anomalous neck proprioceptive input can produce perturbing effects on posture, neck muscle fatigue could alter body balance control through a mechanism connected to fatigue-induced afferent inflow. Eighteen normal subjects underwent fatiguing contractions of head extensor muscles. Sway during quiet stance was recorded by a dynamometric platform, both prior to and after fatigue and recovery, with eyes open and eyes closed. After each trial, subjects were asked to rate their postural control. Fatigue was induced by having subjects stand upright and exert a force corre
