Vestibular physiology and function in zebrafish.

The vestibular system of the inner ear provides information about head motion and spatial orientation relative to gravity to ensure gaze stability, balance, and postural control. Zebrafish, like humans, have five sensory patches per ear that serve as peripheral vestibular organs, with the addition of the lagena and macula neglecta. The zebrafish inner ear can be easily studied due to its accessible location, the transparent tissue of larval fish, and the early development of vestibular behaviors. Thus, zebrafish are an excellent model for studying the development, physiology, and function of t

Phytodermatitis in eastern Turkey: a retrospective, observational study.

BACKGROUND: Plant life is extremely diverse, with a great deal of geographic and seasonal variation. Consequently, the range of reported adverse reactions is large, and there are important differences worldwide in the incidence and prevalence of these reactions. Systemic ingestion of some plants containing furocoumarins can cause erythema, edema, vesicle and bulla formation and later hyperpigmentation, after exposure to sunlight. They may at times exhibit clinical manifestations that mimic angioedema, and rarely progress to necrosis. This condition is named phyto-phototoxic reaction. OBJECTIV

Inbreeding and reproduction in endangered ungulates: preservation of genetic variation through the Organization of Genetic Resource Banks.

There is a constant increase in the number of species suffering marked reductions in population size. This reduction in size and the lack of genetic flow may lead to a decrease in genetic variability and to matings between close relatives (i.e. inbreeding) with an ensuing reduction in fitness. It is thus important to understand the mechanism underlying the deleterious effects of inbreeding and to develop reproductive biotechnologies that will allow the reduction of inbreeding depression by facilitating gene exchange between populations. The study of three endangered species of gazelles, Cuvier

Coxiella burnetii detected in three species of endangered North African gazelles that recently aborted.

Coxiella (C.) burnetii is the etiological agent of the zoonotic disease known a Q fever. This agent can infect multiple hosts although its pathogenic potential in wild ruminants has been poorly studied. The polymerase chain reaction and the serological test detected the presence of C. burnetii in a population of North African gazelles (n = 355), comprising dorcas gazelle (Gazella dorcas neglecta), dama gazelle (Nanger dama mhorr) and Cuvier's gazelle (Gazella cuvieri) which, some of them, they recently aborted. Serological tests for Brucella spp., C. burnetii, Chlamydophila abortus, border dis

Blood-feeding patterns of the Culex pipiens complex in Sacramento and Yolo Counties, California.

Mosquitoes in the Culex pipiens complex are competent vectors of West Nile virus (WNV; family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus) in the laboratory, and field-collected mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in California and elsewhere. A better understanding of Cx. pipiens complex blood-feeding patterns will help define the threat that these mosquitoes pose to human health and their role in WNV amplification in northern California. We collected blood-engorged Cx. pipiens complex mosquitoes from resting sites near and away from human habitation in Sacramento and Yolo Counties. Cytochrome c

Effect of fruits granola (Frugra®) consumption on blood pressure reduction and intestinal microbiome in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a major cause of death in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Blood pressure (BP) and uremic toxins are well-known risk factors for CVDs, which are influenced by diet. Dietary fiber supplementation in patients undergoing HD may reduce the risk of CVDs by improving lipid profiles and inflammatory status and lowering the levels of the uremic toxin indoxyl sulfate (IS). In this study, we investigated the relationship between the intestinal microbiota and risk factors for CVDs, such as BP and serum IS, in patients undergoing HD who consumed fruits granola (FGR

Helminth Species and Infracommunities in Frogs Pelophylax ridibundus and P. esculentus (Amphibia: Ranidae) in Northern Ukraine.

PURPOSE: The study aims to characterise and compare the helminth assemblages and helminth infracommunities in the marsh frog, Pelophylax ridibundus and the edible frog, P. esculentus collected in the northern part of Ukraine. METHODS: Occurrence and abundance of the helminths were analysed by calculating the prevalence, intensity, and mean abundance of infection; similarities between the infracommunities were estimated by the Bray-Curtis index and visualised using nMDS plots. Dissimilarities were estimated using the ANOSIM and SIMPER routines. RESULTS: In total, 27 helminth species were foun

Akkermansia muciniphila enhances chicken resistance to infectious bronchitis virus by boosting GABA synthesis and suppressing the NF-κB inflammatory pathway.

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is a major viral pathogen causing substantial economic losses in the global poultry industry. However, the limited efficacy of commercial vaccines and the absence of approved antiviral drugs underscore the urgent need for novel strategies to combat IBV, particularly in the context of antibiotic-free poultry production. Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiota plays a crucial role in shaping host immunity and antiviral resilience. In this study, we demonstrated that gut microbiota composition is a key determinant of IBV resistance in chickens, as revealed

Chloroplast phylogenomics in Camelina (Brassicaceae) reveals multiple origins of polyploid species and the maternal lineage of C. sativa.

The genus Camelina (Brassicaceae) comprises 7-8 diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid species. Of particular agricultural interest is the biofuel crop, C. sativa (gold-of-pleasure or false flax), an allohexaploid domesticated from the widespread weed, C. microcarpa. Recent cytogenetics and genomics work has uncovered the identity of the parental diploid species involved in ancient polyploidization events in Camelina. However, little is known about the maternal subgenome ancestry of contemporary polyploid species. To determine the diploid maternal contributors of polyploid Camelina lineages, we se

Microfilariae infestation of goliath frogs (Conraua goliath) from Cameroon.

The goliath frog (Conraua goliath) is endemic to Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. It is an endangered species but little information is known about its parasites. To understand the impact of blood parasites on this species, we microscopically examined blood smears from 78 goliath frogs in February and November 2016 (dry and wet seasons) from six localities in Littoral Region of Cameroon, and we sequenced mitochondrial DNA from positive samples. Microfilariae were found in 33/78 (42.3%) goliath frogs at six locations. No other haemoparasite species was detected. Morphological characteristics of

Case report: Endolymphatic system disease in elasmobranchs: clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment strategies.

The inner ear is an often overlooked system in elasmobranchs with few documented reports of disease or other abnormalities in the literature. Similar to terrestrial vertebrates, it is located in the cranium, and there are multiple components to the ear of elasmobranchs including a pair of membranous labyrinths each with three semicircular canals and four chambers or end organs (the saccule, the lagena, the utricle and the macula neglecta) making up the endolymphatic system (ELS). There is species variability among the inner ear anatomy of elasmobranchs, and this may play a role in disease deve

Differences in the Gut Microbiota in Long-Term Infertile Holstein Repeat Breeder Cows and Healthy Fertile Holstein Cows.

Repeat breeder (RB) cows are subfertile animals and represent a major issue in the livestock industry. The influence of the gut microbiota on reproductive function and the gut microbiota-gonadal axis has garnered scientific attention. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between reproductive performance and gut microbiota in Holstein cows, depending on reproductive attempts (number of artificial inseminations or embryo transfers) and subsequent pregnancy outcomes. Fecal samples were collected from Holstein cows at the time of ovulation and classified into four groups: Normal pregnancy

A holistic approach for severe flexion contracture of bilateral hip, knee, and ankle joints in a neglected patient with prolonged knee-chest positioning on extreme undernourishment: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Flexion contracture in the lower extremity is a common finding in the patient with neuromusculoskeletal disorders. However, severe cases due to prolonged immobilization in knee-chest position are rarely established and remain underreported. This condition is associated with high morbidity and reduced quality of life, especially when it comes to neglected cases with missed injury and late presentation for adequate primary care and rehabilitative program. It remains a difficult challenge to treat, with no established treatment protocol. In addition, other factors related to psycholog

The journey of boswellic acids from synthesis to pharmacological activities.

There has been a lot of interest in using naturally occurring substances to treat a wide variety of chronic disorders in recent years. From the gum resin of Boswellia serrata and Boswellia carteri, the pentacyclic triterpene molecules known as boswellic acid (BA) are extracted. We aimed to provide a detailed overview of the origins, chemistry, synthetic derivatives, pharmacokinetic, and biological activity of numerous Boswellia species and their derivatives. The literature searched for reports of B. serrata and isolated BAs having anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic,
