[Kingella kingae septicemia in a patient with coxsackievirus infection].

Kingella kingae is a gram-negative cocci present in the oral flora ; this organism is difficult to isolate by conventional culture techniques ; it can be detected after longer incubation period (more than 6 days) in blood culture. It is responsible of various infectious diseases, especially in children below 3 years-old where it is a cause of arthritis and osteomyeli tis. It is included in HACEK organisms responsible of 2 to 3 % of all cases of native endocarditis. The case report is the case of a young women with Kingella kingae septicemia in a context of oral lesions from Coxsackie virus inf

Association of Moraxella ovis with keratoconjunctivitis in mule deer and moose in Wyoming.

Six cases of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) in mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and moose (Alces alces) in Wyoming (USA) were investigated during fall and winter of 1995 and 1996. Excessive lacrimation, mucopurulent conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal opacity were observed in mule deer. Moose had severe mucopurulent conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal ulceration. Hemolytic, non-piliated Moraxella ovis was isolated from two mule deer and two moose. We attempted to reproduce IKC in three mule deer fawns using an isolate of M. ovis from a clinically affected mule deer. These fawns did

[Characteristics of nonpathogenic Neisseria and Branhamella catarrhalis based on cytopathogenicity].

The study of the action of 12 Neisseria species belonging to 112 strains, 6 B. catarrhalis strains and 202 meningococcal strains on the culture of continuous cell line F1 (human amniotic cells) has revealed that nonpathogenic Neisseria are essentially weaker than meningococci in their pathogenicity (expressed in terms of CPD50). Among nonpathogenic Neisseria highly cytopathogenic strains occur in 13.9% of cases, which gives grounds for considering them opportunistic bacteria. Sharply pronounced correlation between the adhesive and pathogenic properties of Neisseria has been observed. The cytop

Recurrent Microvirgula aerodenitrificans bacteremia.

Microvirgula aerodenitrificans is a denitrifying Gram-negative organism first described by Patureau et al. in 1998 (D. Patureau et al., Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol. 48:775-782, 1998). The organism has been isolated globally but has never been described as causative of clinical infection. We describe the first human case of bacteremia attributed to M. aerodenitrificans in an infant with Pompe's disease.

Neisseria meningitidis, pathogenetic mechanisms to overcome the human immune defences.

Neisseria meningitidis is hosted only by humans and colonizes the nasopharynx; it survives in the human body by reaching an equilibrium with its exclusive host. Indeed, while cases of invasive disease are rare, the number of asymptomatic Neisseria meningitides carriers is far higher. The aim of this paper is to summarize the current knowledge of survival strategies of Neisseria meningitides against the human immune defences. Neisseria meningitidis possesses a variety of adaptive characteristics which enable it to avoid being killed by the immune system, such as the capsule, the lipopolysacchar

Pre-septal cellulitis and facial erysipelas due to Moraxella species.

We describe a patient with an acute ulcerated pre-septal cellulitis with subsequent spread across the face, in whom conjunctival swabs demonstrated the presence of Moraxella species. Unusually, this organism was resistant to penicillin. Clinical improvement was only achieved when treatment with co-amoxiclav was commenced on the basis of the antibiotic sensitivities demonstrated by culture of this organism. Moraxella species are rare skin pathogens but may be underestimated as they usually respond to a wide range of antibiotics; they should be considered as a cause of facial cellulitis or erysi

Clinical manifestations of Kingella kingae infections: case report and review.

A patient with antecedent coccidioidal pulmonary cavitary disease who developed an empyema due to Kingella kingae prompted our analysis of the literature regarding this unusual bacterial pathogen. Formerly classified among other genera and considered a nonpathogen, K. kingae has been increasingly recognized as a cause of human infection. While the most commonly diagnosed infections due to this organism are endocarditis and septic arthritis, there have also been isolated reports of bacteremia, diskitis, abscesses, meningitis, and oropharyngeal infections. The treatment of choice is penicillin,

Therapeutic target mapping from the genome of Kingella negevensis and biophysical inhibition assessment through PNP synthase binding with traditional medicinal compounds.

Kingella negevensis belongs to the Neisseriaceae family. It is implied that it has significant virulence potential due to RTX toxin production, which can cause hemolysis. It usually colonizes the orophayrynx of pediatric population, along with Kingella kingae but has also been isolated from vagina. Todate no report on its drug targets is present, therefore putative therapeutic targets were identified from its genomic sequence data. Traditional Chinese (n > 36,000) and Indian medicinal compounds (n > 2000) were then screened against its pyridoxine 5'-phosphate synthase, a vital therapeutic targ

Microbial therapeutics for canine periodontal disease: current status and future perspectives.

Periodontal disease in dogs arises from ecological disruption of the oral microbiome. Sequencing-based studies and quantitative molecular analyses reveal characteristic dysbiotic transitions in affected dogs, with coordinated increases in Porphyromonas gulae, Prevotella, and Treponema, along with Treponema denticola and Tannerella forsythia, together with a loss of commensal-dominated genera such as Moraxella, Capnocytophaga, and members of the Neisseriaceae family. Rather than being driven by a single dominant pathogen, accumulating evidence indicates that canine periodontitis is driven by po

Immunogenicity expressed in patients with bacteraemia of an epitope shared by enterobacterial and neisserial porin proteins.

A monoclonal antibody (MAb) against an epitope (Po I) on an Escherichia coli O55 porin protein has shown broad cross-reactivity with other Enterobacteriaceae and with both pathogenic and non-pathogenic Neisseriaceae. In this study, we have measured antibody levels against the Po I site in patients with bacteraemia in order to examine the immunogenicity of the Po I domain in humans. A MAb-based competition ELISA (cELISA) was used. Only 20% of healthy controls had detectable levels of anti-Po I antibodies in serum. Of patients bacteraemic with enterobacteria (n = 45), 11% and 58% showed elevated

Pan-genome mediated therapeutic target mining in Kingella kingae and inhibition assessment using traditional Chinese medicinal compounds: an informatics approach.

Kingella kingae causes bacteremia, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, meningitis, spondylodiscitis, and lower respiratory tract infections in pediatric patients. Usually it demonstrates disease after inflammation of mouth, lips or infections of the upper respiratory tract. To date, therapeutic targets in this bacterium remain unexplored. We have utilized a battery of bioinformatics tools to mine these targets in this study. Core genes were initially inferred from 55 genomes of K. kingae and 39 therapeutic targets were mined using an in-house pipeline. We selected aroG product (KDPG

[Bone and joint infections in children].

Bone and joint infections in children. Bone and joint infections in children are diagnostic and therapeutic emergencies. The most frequently isolated bacteria are Staphylococcus aureus and Kingella kingae. The latter gives few clinical symptoms with slightly abnormal biological signs. Improved bacteriological sampling techniques and analysis (PCR) have allowed to isolate fragile germs. The clinical examination is fundamental completed by bone scintigraphy and MRI for early diagnosis. Actual shorter antibiotic treatment protocols are currently used and shorten the duration of hospitalization. S

Laribacter hongkongensis gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel gram-negative bacterium isolated from a cirrhotic patient with bacteremia and empyema.

A bacterium was isolated from the blood and empyema of a cirrhotic patient. The cells were facultatively anaerobic, nonsporulating, gram-negative, seagull shaped or spiral rods. The bacterium grows on sheep blood agar as nonhemolytic, gray colonies 1 mm in diameter after 24 h of incubation at 37 degrees C in ambient air. Growth also occurs on MacConkey agar and at 25 and 42 degrees C but not at 4, 44, and 50 degrees C. The bacterium can grow in 1 or 2% but not 3, 4, or 5% NaCl. No enhancement of growth is observed with 5% CO(2). The organism is aflagellated and nonmotile at both 25 and 37 degr

Profiling of ocular surface microbiome and its ocular types in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The ocular surface microbiome is increasingly recognized for its role in eye health, but the complexity of its composition complicates personalized characterization. This study aims to define the ocular surface microbiome profile and identify distinct microbial community clusters, or Ocular Types, in a population of children and adolescents. METHODS: In this population-based, cross-sectional study, conjunctival swabs from children and adolescents were processed with 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequencing. Microbial clusters were determined using a partitioning around medoids c

Categorization of the Ocular Microbiome in Japanese Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Patients With Severe Ocular Complications.

The commensal microbiota is involved in a variety of diseases. Our group has noticed that patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) often present with persistent inflammation of the ocular surface, even in the chronic stage, and that this inflammation is exacerbated by colonization of the mucosa by certain bacteria. However, the changes in the composition of the ocular microbiome in SJS/TEN patients with severe ocular complications (SOCs) remain to be fully investigated. Here, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 46 Japanese subjects comprising 9 healthy
