Helminth parasites lack the capacity to synthesize polyamines de novo. With the view to characterise alternative pools for the replenishment of polyamines, uptake of spermidine and spermine, were studied in Acanthocheilonema viteae, a parasite known to infect rodents. Motile worms recovered from the subcutaneous tissues of experimentally infected Mastomys natalensis were incubated in vitro with radiolabelled polyamines for the uptake assays. A time-dependent, temperature-sensitive, energy-requiring and saturable-uptake of the polyamines was observed. Male worms exhibited better uptake than the

Rats fed a restricted amount (60% of ad libitum intake) of a well-balanced diet (protein energy:total energy ratio of 0.20) had a reduced growth rate but maintained near-normal plasma albumin concentrations. However, when such animals were infected with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (a hookwormlike intestinal parasite), plasma albumin values fell precipitously, from a preinfection value of 34.7 g/L to 21.3 g/L on d 10 postinfection (p.i.). The hypoalbuminemia developed rapidly, without changes in body weight and despite an adequate amount of dietary protein. Similarly infected well-nourished an

Two nematode species parasitizing different developmental stages of the Indian rice frog Fejervarya kawamurai collected from Kasugai City, Japan, were examined using an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and molecular analyses. Tadpoles of F. kawamurai were found to be infected exclusively by the oxyuroid nematode Gyrinicola japonicus, whereas adult frogs harboured a cosmocercoid nematode representing a new species of Cosmocerca, namely C. kasugaiensis n. sp. Detailed morphological observations revealed diagnostic characters of the new spec

Dagger and needle nematodes included in the family Longidoridae (viz. Longidorus, Paralongidorus, and Xiphinema) are highly polyphagous plant-parasitic nematodes in wild and cultivated plants and some of them are plant-virus vectors (nepovirus). The mitochondrial (mt) genomes of the dagger and needle nematodes, Xiphinema rivesi, Xiphinema pachtaicum, Longidorus vineacola and Paralongidorus litoralis were sequenced in this study. The four circular mt genomes have an estimated size of 12.6, 12.5, 13.5 and 12.7 kb, respectively. Up to date, the mt genome of X. pachtaicum is the smallest genome fo

Angiostrongylus costaricensis is a zoonotic parasitic nematode that causes abdominal or intestinal angiostrongyliasis in humans. It is endemic to the Americas. Although the mitochondrial genome of the Brazil taxon has been published, there is no available mitochondrial genome data on the Costa Rica taxon. We report here the complete mitochondrial genome of the Costa Rica taxon and its genetic differentiation from the Brazil taxon. The whole mitochondrial genome was obtained from next-generation sequencing of genomic DNA. It had a total length of 13,652 bp, comprising 36 genes (12 protein-codin

Dagger nematode, Xiphinema rivesi Dalmaso, 1969 reportedly transmits several viruses in North America and Europe (2) leading to severe yield reduction in crops. Soil samples were collected in March 2013 during a survey of cherry orchards in Chelan County, WA; these historically suffer from cherry rasp leaf disease, caused by Cherry rasp leaf virus (CRLV) (genus Cheravirus). Soil samples were transported to the WSDA nematology laboratory in Prosser, WA, where 250-cc subsamples were processed using sucrose centrifugal flotation (1). Dagger nematodes were hand-picked and stored in 0.1% sodium chl

A 6-yr-old female Grevy's zebra (Equus grevyi) with a disseminated rhabditiform nematode infection is described. Antemortem clinical signs were limited to blindness and abnormal behavior believed to be caused by a recurrent nematode-induced uveitis. Histologic examination of the kidneys, heart, eyes, uterus, and lymph nodes revealed granulomas containing multiple sections of rhabditiform nematodes. Most of the recovered nematodes were larval stages with only a few adult females noted. The adults measured 243-297 microm x 11-16 microm (x = 269 x 14 microm). The distinctive rhabditiform esophagi

A series of 849 male pinworms collected from a 64-yr-old Japanese male was examined. They were classified by the spicule morphology into 87 Enterobius vermicularis (Linnaeus, 1758), 754 Enterobius gregorii Hugot, 1983, and 6 immature adults, whereas 2 worms lacked spicules. The worm length of E. vermicularis was significantly larger than E. gregorii. The shape and length of the distal tubular portion of the spicule were identical in these forms, whereas the basal portion was different. The immature adults just after the final molt or still within the cuticle of the fourth stage had only a dist

The embryonal development of Trichocephalus trichiurus and Eucoleus oesophagicola is described. Clevage of both species is full, bilaterally-symmetrical, determined. At the two blastomere stage the epidermis material is localized in the anterior one. The development of both species lacks the rhomb figure characteristic of nematodes. The mouth opening breaks independent of blastopore. The stylet anlage formation was noted for T. trichiurus.

The ultrastruct of the adult subperiodic Brugia malayi (Brug, 1927) within pulmonary arteries of male jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) was studied by transmission electron microscopy. The cuticle consists of 10 sublayers (2 of which are prominently banded) and a typical outer unit membrane. Evidence is presented showing that the subcuticular region of the lateral chords comprises a functional complex of basal infoldings, multivesicular bodies, and associated mitochondria, which is probably engaged in the exchange of solutes across a permeable cuticle. Microbodies with paired, prominent cores, int

Homologous passive cutaneous anaphylactic tests in guinea-pigs revealed the production of skin sensitizing antibody by Metastrongylus spp. infection. Skin sensitizing antibody was detected by immediate wheal and flare reaction in an infected pig. The pig skin sensitizing antibody failed to elicit a Prausnitz—Kustner (PK) reaction in an uninfected recipient pig, or heterologous passive cutaneous anaphylaxis in guinea-pigs.
