Neonicotinoid insecticides have been shown to have high chronic toxicity relative to acute toxicity, and therefore short-term toxicity tests ≤96 h in duration may underestimate their environmental risks. Among nontarget aquatic invertebrates, insects of the orders Diptera and Ephemeroptera have been found to be the most sensitive to neonicotinoids. To undertake a more accurate assessment of the risks posed by neonicotinoids to freshwater ecosystems, more data are needed from long-term tests employing the most sensitive taxa. Using nymphs of the common New Zealand mayfly genus Deleatidium spp.,

Pesticide exposure is a growing global concern for pollinator conservation. While most current pesticide studies have specifically focused on the impacts of neonicotinoid insecticides toward honeybees and some native bee species, wild pollinators may be exposed to a broader range of agrochemicals. In 2016 and 2017 we collected a total of 637 wild bees and butterflies from the margins of cultivated agricultural fields situated on five Conservation Areas in mid-northern Missouri. Pollinators were composited by individual genera (90 samples) and whole tissues were then analyzed for the presence o

Neonicotinoids are the most widely used class of insecticides in the world, and there are increasing concerns about their effects on non-target organisms. Analytical methods to diagnose exposure to neonicotinoids in wildlife are still very limited, particularly for small animals such as songbirds. Blood can be used as a non-lethal sampling matrix, but the sample volume is limited by body size. Neonicotinoids have a low bioaccumulation potential and are rapidly metabolized, therefore, sensitive assays are critically needed to reliably detect their residues in blood samples. We developed an effi

Bombus terrestris bumblebees are important pollinators of wild flowers, and in modern agriculture they are used to guarantee pollination of vegetables and fruits. In the field it is likely that worker bees are exposed to pesticides during foraging. To date, several tests exist to assess lethal and sublethal side-effects of pesticides on bee survival, growth/development and reproduction. Within the context of ecotoxicology and insect physiology, we report the development of a new bioassay to assess the impact of sublethal concentrations on the bumblebee foraging behavior under laboratory condit

Kissing bugs (Rhodnius prolixus) are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, posing risks to military personnel and working dogs in endemic regions. This study quantified time-dependent knockdown of R. prolixus on commercial 300-series (80% blockage) netting treated with dinotefuran (neonicotinoid) or esfenvalerate (pyrethroid) under controlled laboratory conditions. Laboratory-reared adult R. prolixus were exposed to 8.2 × 8.2 cm net clippings in modified WHO cone bioassays. Four insects per replicate were exposed for 3, 6, 9, 12, or 15 minutes (five replicates per exposure × treatment; N = 300, includ

Recently, neonicotinoids have become the fastest-growing class of insecticides in conventional crop protection, with extensive usage against a wide range of sucking and chewing pests. Neonicotinoids are widely used due to their high toxicity to invertebrates, simplicity, flexibility with which they may be applied, and lengthy persistence, and their systemic nature ensures that they spread to all sections of the target crop. However, these properties raise the risk of environmental contaminations and potential toxicity to non-target organisms. Acetamiprid is a new generation insecticide, which

Current-use pesticides are ubiquitous in freshwaters globally, often at very low concentrations. Emerging aquatic insects can accumulate pesticides during their aquatic development, which can be retained through their metamorphosis into terrestrial adults. Emerging insects thus provide a potential, yet largely understudied linkage for exposure of terrestrial insectivores to waterborne pesticides. We measured 82 low to moderately lipophilic organic pesticides (logKow: -2.87 to 6.9) in the aquatic environment, emerging insects and web-building riparian spiders from stream sites impacted by agric

The stimulation of biological processes by sublethal doses of insecticides or other stressors is known as hormesis. Here, we have evaluated whether exposure to field-relevant or low concentrations of neonicotinoids induce changes in the reproductive capacity of the bulb mite Rhizoglyphus robini (Acari: Acaridae). Among the tested neonicotinoids imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and dinotefuran, the highest hormetic effect on the reproduction of R. robini occurred 24 h after the 48 h exposure period to imidacloprid at concentrations of 70 and 140 mg a.i./L. Despite the stimulating effects of imidaclo

Seed coatings are a treatment used on a variety of crops to improve production and offer protection against pests and fungal outbreaks. The leaching of the active ingredients associated with the seed coatings and the sorption to soil was evaluated under laboratory conditions using commercially available corn and soybean seeds to study the fate and transport of these pesticides under controlled conditions. The active ingredients (AI) included one neonicotinoid insecticide (thiamethoxam) and five fungicides (azoxystrobin, fludioxonil, metalaxyl, sedaxane thiabendazole). An aqueous leaching exper

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have identified detectable levels of neonicotinoids (neonics) in the environment, adverse effects of neonics in many species, including mammals, and pathways through which human exposure to neonics could occur, yet little is known about the human health effects of neonic exposure.
OBJECTIVE: In this systematic review, we sought to identify human population studies on the health effects of neonics.
METHODS: Studies published in English between 2005 and 2015 were searched using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. No restrictions were placed on the type of

Neonicotinoid insecticides control crop pests based on their action as agonists at the insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, which accepts chloropyridinyl- and chlorothiazolyl-analogs almost equally well. In some cases, these compounds have also been reported to enhance plant vigor and (a)biotic stress tolerance, independent of their insecticidal function. However, this mode of action has not been defined. Using Arabidopsis thaliana, we show that the neonicotinoid compounds, imidacloprid (IMI) and clothianidin (CLO), via their 6-chloropyridinyl-3-carboxylic acid and 2-chlorothiazolyl-5-carb

Imidacloprid (IMI), an insecticide from the neonicotinoid group widely used in agriculture, has drawn attention due to its potential harmful effects on non-target species, including bird populations. In the present work, we investigated the effect of IMI on avian semen by in vitro exposure of rooster spermatozoa to this pesticide. The semen was collected twice a week. Samples collected on one day were pooled and incubated with the following IMI concentrations: 0 mM, 0.5 mM, 5 mM, 10 mM, and 50 mM at 36°C for 3 h. Comprehensive semen analysis was carried out after 1 h and 3 h of incubation, eva

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are widely applied in agricultural lands and are widespread in different environments, accelerating threats to ecosystems and human health. A number of in vitro/in vivo studies have reported adverse effects of NEOs on mammalian health, but the link between NEO exposure and toxic effects on human liver remains unclear. We randomly recruited 201 participants and quantified eight commercialized NEOs in bile. High frequency and concentration of detection indicate low degradation of human liver on NEOs. The main NEOs are nitenpyram and dinotefuran, which contribute to about 86

The widespread use of neonicotinoids has resulted in large residues in the soil, which has a major impact on the lizards that inhabit the soil. Thyroid hormones play an important role in the growth and development of lizards. In this report, we assessed the disrupting effects of thyroid system on lizards after 28 days of continuous exposure to dinotefuran, thiamethoxam, and imidacloprid, respectively. Neonicotinoid insecticides could seriously affect the concentration of T4 in lizard plasma and the conversion of T4 to T3 in the thyroid gland. Specifically, exposure to dinotefuran affected the

The oomycete Phytophthora capsici causes Phytophthora blight, a major constraint on global pepper production. Our previous observations indicated that pretreating plants with thiamethoxam (TMX) and imidacloprid (IMI) could reduce the incidence of pepper blight, but the underlying mechanisms remained unclear. Here, we investigated how TMX and IMI induced resistance in pepper (Capsicum frutescens) against P. capsici. Both in vitro and in vivo assays demonstrated that TMX and IMI suppressed disease, not by directly impairing pathogen virulence but by inducing systemic resistance in susceptible (C

The worldwide use of neonicotinoid pesticides has caused concern on account of their involvement in the decline of bee populations, which are key pollinators in most ecosystems. Here we describe a role of non-neuronal acetylcholine (ACh) for breeding of Apis mellifera carnica and a so far unknown effect of neonicotinoids on non-target insects. Royal jelly or larval food are produced by the hypopharyngeal gland of nursing bees and contain unusually high ACh concentrations (4-8 mM). ACh is extremely well conserved in royal jelly or brood food because of the acidic pH of 4.0. This condition prote

An amino-functionalized pyrazine-based highly conjugated covalent organic framework (NH2-PyCOF) was synthesized via a post-synthetic modification strategy and applied as an adsorbent for the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of four neonicotinoid insecticides (NTIs) in honey, beverage and water samples. NH2-PyCOF combines a highly conjugated pyrazine skeleton with multiple amino sites, which not only enhances its hydrophilicity but also provides multiple interaction sites, including hydrogen-bonding and π-π stacking sites. When NH2-PyCOF-based SPE was coupled with HPLC-MS, the method demonstrated l

Synthetic pesticides (e.g. herbicides, fungicides and insecticides) are used widely in agriculture to protect crops from pests, weeds and disease. However, their use also comes with a range of environmental concerns. One key concern is the effect of insecticides on non-target organisms such as bees, who provide pollination services for crops and wild plants. This systematic literature review quantifies the existing research on bees and insecticides broadly, and then focuses more specifically on non-neonicotinoid insecticides and non-honeybees. We find that articles on honeybees (Apis sp.) and

Developing an effective method for reliable monitoring of insecticide residues is desirable for public health. This study developed a rapid and sensitive method to determine neonicotinoid insecticides (NEONICs) in water, lemon beverage, wax gourd, and tomato samples. An imidazole-functionalized COF (TPT-DB-COF) featuring a spherical core-shell structure was developed and used as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent. The TPT-DB-COF exhibited superior adsorption ability for NEONICs. The TPT-DB-COF-SPE/HPLC-DAD approach for trace analysis of NEONICs had low detection limits (0.02-0.03 ng mL-1

Chagas disease remains an important public health concern across the Americas, affecting both human and animal populations. The triatomine bug Rhodnius prolixus, an obligate hematophagous vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, is commonly associated with environments where domestic and working animals are housed. Military working dogs (MWDs) deployed or stationed in endemic or expansion zones are particularly vulnerable to infection, which can lead to severe clinical disease and reduced operational readiness. This study evaluated the residual knockdown efficacy of esfenvalerate- and dinotefuran-treated
