Three Cases of Mandibular Ossifying Fibroma in Cattle.

Neoplastic masses were evaluated in the rostral region of the mandible of three young adult cattle. In all three cases, the masses were macroscopically large, firm, ulcerated, infiltrative, whitish and solid, and led to tooth displacement and loss. Radiographically, the neoplastic masses were intraosseous and radiolucent with foci of radiopacity. Loss of radiopacity due to bone necrosis was seen in the mandibular bone adjacent to the neoplasms. Histologically, well-differentiated, infiltrative non-encapsulated mesenchymal neoplastic proliferation replaced the mandibular bone and extended to th

Adult-onset multifocal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma in the bone marrow, lung, liver, and brain: a case report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE), a rare form of vascular neoplasm, is typically seen in children. In this paper, we report a unique case of KHE replacing bone marrow tissue mimicking myeloproliferative neoplasm with additional involvement in the lung, liver, and brain in a 60-year-old Caucasian woman. The patient was initially seen in the hematology department for the chief complaint of epigastric pain and anemia. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed mild splenomegaly with iron deposition secondary to extramedullary hematopoiesis. Additional workup was inconclusive. Subseq

Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute myeloid leukemia with masses and osteolytic lesions: finding of 18F-FDG PET/CT.

Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute myeloid leukemia is controversial and difficult to distinguish from the blast phase of chronic myeloid leukemia. As a myeloid neoplasm, rare cases of this leukemia manifest multiple soft-tissue tumors or bone lytic lesions. In this paper, we describe a 49-year-old male patient who had an abrupt onset with sharp chest pain, fever, fatigue, emaciation, and splenomegaly. 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) result showed diffuse and uneven hypermetabolic lesions in the bone marrow with peripheral bone mar

Keeping it real: Merging traditional and contemporary practices in musculoskeletal pathology: A special issue of neoplastic and non-neoplastic bone and soft tissue pathology.

There is no shortage of comprehensive review articles on bone and soft tissue pathology, almost always representing a regurgitation of the literature with little to no guidance on personal "best practices," recommended applications of ancillary testing, and alternative points of view. This special issue of Human Pathology uniquely unites evidence-based medicine, where appropriate, with the collective personal experiences of a wide range of accomplished pathologists from varying institutions and backgrounds, addressing problematic areas, updated and sometimes imperfect classification systems, a

Humoral hypercalcemia due to an occult renal adenoma.

Humoral hypercalcemia refers to the elevated blood calcium levels caused by neoplasms which release a bone resorptive substance into the circulation. Previously reported infants with malignant and benign solid tumors causing humoral hypercalcemia have presented with large abdominal masses. The case we describe, a hypercalcemic infant due to an occult parathyroid hormone-related protein-containing metanephric adenoma of the kidney, shows that radionuclide bone scanning can be a useful test to identify humoral hypercalcemia. Humoral hypercalcemia stemming from a soft tissue neoplasm should be ru

Causal relationships between oral-gut microbiome and bone neoplasm-related phenotypes: Insights from bidirectional Mendelian randomization.

The human oral and gut microbiota are the 4 largest microbial communities in the body and play crucial roles in maintaining homeostasis and influencing disease. Observational studies have suggested links between these microbiota and bone neoplasm-related phenotypes, but establishing causality has been challenging due to confounding factors and reverse causality. We conducted a bidirectional, 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate evidence consistent with a potential causal association between the saliva and gut microbiota and various bone neoplasm-related phenotypes. Two cases of giant cell tumours of the orbit: one case of giant cell tumor associated with Paget's disease of bone and one case of tenosynovial giant cell tumor.

Giant cell tumors (GCT) are a rare group of fibrohistiocytic neoplasms that may originate from bone or soft tissue. They are typically found in the extremities or trunk and are rarely reported in the head and neck. While they are benign, they may grow rapidly and be locally destructive. To our knowledge, only three case reports of giant cell tumors of soft tissue involving the orbit have been reported in the literature. We report two cases: one case of giant cell tumor associated with Paget's disease of the bone and one of tenosynovial giant cell tumor.

HMGA2::NCOR2 fusion-driven giant cell tumors: Diagnosis and treatment.

Giant cell-rich tumors encompass a heterogeneous group of bone and soft tissue neoplasms with overlapping morphologic features but distinct molecular drivers and clinical behaviors. Recent studies have identified a unique subset of giant cell-rich tumors characterized by recurrent HMGA2::NCOR2 gene fusions, variably described as xanthogranulomatous epithelial tumor or keratin-positive giant cell tumor. In this paper, we emphasize the clinicopathologic, histologic, and molecular features that distinguish these rare neoplasms from conventional giant cell tumors of bone, soft tissue giant cell tu

Primary angiosarcoma of the fibula : a case report.

Primary vascular neoplasms of bone are rare and have a poor prognosis. Angiosarcoma of bone originates in vascular endothelial cells within bone tissue. Patients may present with unifocal or multifocal osseous disease. The most commonly involved bones are femur and tibia, followed by pelvis, vertebral column and bones of the upper limb. Here we present a 72-year-old male patient who had primary angiosarcoma of the fibula. He was treated with amputation, and the metastases that later emerged were successfully managed with chemotherapy.

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the lunate: Case report and literature review.

The aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign osteolytic bone neoplasm. Although most ABC is asymptomatic, in some cases they produce a mass effect, impinging against soft tissues or interfering with joint function. The authors present a rare case report of a lunate ABC successfully treated by curettage and bone grafting, and review the literature of this pathology.

[Benign skin neoplasms in children].

There are many different types of skin neoplasms in children and most are benign. Dermatologists should be able to differentiate between the various types of benign skin neoplasms and be able to recommend optimal treatment to concerned patients. Surgical removal of benign skin neoplasms is often the only treatment option. The aim of this paper is to provide a general overview of epidermal lesions (e.g., inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus [ILVEN], nevus sebaceous), tumors of the epidermal appendages (e.g. pilomatrixoma), cutaneous neoplasms (e.g. angiofibroma), fibromatoses (e.g., kn

Intracranial meningioma with abnormal localization of bone-seeking radiopharmaceutical: correlation with gross and microscopic pathology.

Meningioma is one of the neoplasms in which there may be extraosseous localization of bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals. Tumor calcification, calvarial erosion, and the formation of reactive bone have been proposed as the cause of this abnormal tracer localization. We present a patient with a frontal meningioma that was evaluated using 99mTc-methylene-diphosphonate bone scintigraphy, head computed tomography, and skull radiography; the homogeneous density seen in the radiographic studies corresponded to the area of bone-seeking-agent localization shown in the scintigram. At autopsy, bony tissu

Malignant epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the lip: a case report and comprehensive literature review.

Malignant epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (MEH), also known as high-risk epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, is a low- to intermediate-grade vascular malignancy originally described as a vascular neoplasm of endothelial origin. This very rare vascular neoplasm has been described mainly in soft tissue, but also in various organs and locations, including the liver, lung, brain, colon, lymph nodes, peritoneum, spleen, bone, skin, heart, soft tissues, and vascular system. Several cases have been described in the head and neck, including the submandibular gland, parotid gland, nasal cavity, paraphar

[Multiple myeloma of the sphenoid sinus: a case report].

Plasma cell neoplasms of the head and neck region can be extramedullary plasmacytoma of the bone, solitary plasmacytoma of the bone, and local manifestations of multiple myeloma. A 70-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital with diplopia of four-day history. Magnetic resonance imaging showed soft tissue in the sphenoid sinus. Endoscopic biopsy was taken from the sphenoid sinus, which revealed multiple myeloma. Despite medical therapy for multiple myeloma, the patient died after a year.

Update on aneurysmal bone cyst: pathophysiology, histology, imaging and treatment.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign but locally aggressive lesion that predominantly affects children and young adults. ABC, which accounts for approximately 70% of the cases, is now recognized to be a true neoplasm, whereas ABC-like changes associated to other bone neoplasms (also referred in the literature as secondary ABC) accounts for the remaining 30%. The solid variant of ABC is also considered a true neoplasm but is rare. ABC can involve any bone in the body, and although it has a metaphyseal preference, it can involve any part of a bone and soft tissues. As with any bone tumor, the

Updates on WHO classification for small round cell tumors: Ewing sarcoma vs. everything else.

The WHO Classification of Soft Tissue and Bone Tumours currently recognizes four categories of undifferentiated small round cell sarcoma: Ewing sarcoma, round cell sarcoma with EWSR1-non-ETS fusions including NFATc2 and PATZ1, CIC-rearranged sarcoma, and sarcoma with BCOR genetic alterations. These neoplasms frequently pose significant diagnostic challenges due to rarity and overlapping morphologic and immunohistochemical findings. Further, molecular testing, with accompanying pitfalls, may be needed to establish a definitive diagnosis. This review summarizes the clinical, histologic, immunohi

NTRK Fusions Detection in Paediatric Sarcomas to Expand the Morphological Spectrum and Clinical Relevance of Selected Entities.

Undifferentiated round cell sarcomas (URCS) of soft tissue and bone and tumours of uncertain differentiation (TUD) are commonly ascribed to a subset of neoplasms with low frequency of NTRK gene fusions. However, more recently NTRK-rearranged round and spindle cell tumours have been noted in case reports and in limited or heterogeneous cohorts. The aim of our study was to investigate the presence of NTRK gene fusions in a large retrospective cohort of paediatric URCS and TUD after a systematic review of the diagnosis, according to the recently updated WHO classification scheme. Multifocal vascular neoplasm with an EWSR1::NFATC2 gene fusion and progression to epithelioid angiosarcoma - a case report.

There is an emerging group of distinct vascular neoplasms with NFATC1/2 fusions, involving bones and soft tissues and often displaying focal epithelioid morphology, variable atypia of endothelial cells, predominantly vasoformative and in some cases focal solid growth. Although they may show aggressive local growth and may recur locally, malignant behaviour has not been documented. We present a case of a 35-year-old woman with multiple vascular neoplasms with a EWSR1::NFATC2 fusion involving the lungs, multiple bones (vertebra, femurs, tibia, pelvis) and probably the liver. Multimodality Treatment in Ewing's Sarcoma Family Tumors of the Maxilla and Maxillary Sinus: Review of the Literature.

The Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT) encompasses a group of highly aggressive, morphologically similar, malignant neoplasms sharing a common spontaneous genetic translocation that affect mostly children and young adults. These predominantly characteristic, small round-cell tumors include Ewing's sarcoma of the bone and soft tissue, as well as primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) involving the bone, soft tissue, and thoracopulmonary region (Askin's tumor). Extraosseous ESFTs are extremely rare, especially in the head and neck region, where literature to date consists of sporadic case r

Audit of oral neoplasms in children and young adults in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial neoplasms in children and young adults may differ significantly from those observed in adults. Our aim was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of histologically diagnosed orofacial neoplasms among children and young adults in Nigeria. METHODS: This was a multicenter cross-sectional study across geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Annual reports of clinical information and surgical biopsies submitted at the Oral Pathology Laboratory, clinic day registries, surgical day case registries and operative theatre registries were retrieved from January 2008 to March 2024.
