Solitary fibrous tumour of the pleura presenting as a giant intrathoracic mass.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are relatively rare neoplasms thought to originate from the submesothelial connective tissue. SFTs have been described in a variety of sites, including the pleura, orbit, lower respiratory tract, peritoneal cavity and heart. These neoplasms are usually benign, though locally aggressive, and metastatic behaviour has been observed in some cases. We describe a case of a 61-year-old man presenting with weight loss, poor appetite, malaise, worsening dyspnoea on exertion and lower extremity oedema, who was found to have a gigantic-21×21 cm-tumour occupying the entire

Primary Aortic Angiosarcoma: A Review of Two Cases Highlighting Unique Imaging and Clinical Characteristics.

Angiosarcomas are rare vascular connective tissue tumors originating from the tunica intima, media, or adventitia and may arise in large vessels. Here two cases of primary angiosarcoma of the aorta are described that highlight initial manifestations and unique complications from diffuse arterial tumor emboli, which led to delayed cancer diagnosis. In patients with aortic lesions, imaging characteristics must be thoughtfully reconciled with clinical scenarios, particularly in patients with no additional evidence of atherosclerosis or vasculitis. Keywords: Oncology, Neoplasms-Primary, MR-Angiogr

Lichenoid histopathologic changes in patients with clinical diagnoses of exfoliative dermatitis.

Among 30 patients who received a clinical diagnosis of exfoliative dermatitis and were biopsied between 1982 and 1990, nine showed microscopic features of lichenoid dermatitis. Clinical information was available in eight of these cases. Possible etiologic factors included lymphoma, herpes simplex infection, connective tissue disease, and (in five cases) reactions to drugs. In each instance, microscopic features included a superficial perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate involving the dermal-epidermal interface, vacuolar alteration of the basilar layer, and individually necrotic keratinocytes at

Malignant thymoma associated with mixed connective tissue disease: a case report.

Many autoimmune diseases have been reported to be associated with malignancy. Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), however, has rarely been associated with malignancy. Thymoma is one of the neoplasms often reported to be related to various immunological disorders. Among the types of thymoma defined by WHO, malignant thymoma (thymoma type C) is the one least reported to be associated with autoimmune disease. Here, we report a case of malignant thymoma with concurrent MCTD, which manifested with acrosclerosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, arthritis (synovitis), and a high titer of anti-ribonucleopro

Desmoplasia in benign and malignant breast disease is characterized by alterations in level of mRNAs coding for types I and III procollagen.

Desmoplasia, the formation of excessive connective tissue surrounding some neoplasms, is a well documented, but incompletely understood phenomenon. To characterize the fibrotic response in benign breast conditions and malignancy, we examined the steady state levels of mRNA coding for types I and III procollagen in mild fibrocystic changes, in fibroadenoma, and in infiltrating ductal carcinoma. The results indicate that in mild fibrocystic change there is a relative increase in type III procollagen mRNA. In contrast, fibroadenoma and carcinoma are characterized by increased levels of type I pro

Fever in Children and Fever of Unknown Origin.

Fever is the most common symptom in children and can be classified as fever with or without focus. Fever without focus can be less than 7 d and is subclassified as fever without localizing signs and fever of unknown origin (FUO). FUO is defined as a temperature greater than 38.3 °C, for more than 3 wk or failure to reach a diagnosis after 1 wk of inpatient investigations. The most common causes of FUO in children are infections, connective tissue disorders and neoplasms. Infectious diseases most commonly implicated in children with FUO are salmonellosis, tuberculosis, malaria and rickettsial d

[Primary and secondary chest wall tumors from the pathologist's viewpoint].

Fibrous dysplasia (20%), metastases (16%) and chondrosarcoma (11%) are the most common bone tumors of the chest wall. Except lipoma, primary lesions of the soft tissue of the chest occur rarely as well. The Askin- and Abrikosoff tumor, elastofibroma dorsi and desmoid can be seen as typical exceptions. With respect to the histogenetic classification of undifferentiated sarcomas and thoracic metastases (f.e. prostatic carcinomas or mesotheliomas) an intimate cooperation of surgeons and pathologists as well as modern immunohistochemical investigations are required.

Application of immunohistochemical studies in diagnosing emerging superficial mesenchymal neoplasms.

Molecular diagnostics, with the subsequent development of novel immunohistochemical markers, continues to advance and expand the field of soft tissue pathology. As such, the ever-evolving molecular diagnostic landscape will continue to shape and refine our understanding and classification of neoplasms. This article reviews the current literature on various tumors of mesenchymal origin, including fibroblastic/fibrohistiocytic, adipocytic, vascular, and tumors of uncertain origin. We aim to give the reader a detailed understanding and pragmatic approach to various new and established immunohisto

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor: two cases highlighting differences in clinical and radiologic presentation.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors are rare, usually benign neoplasms that occur in the soft tissue or bone and are the cause of nearly all cases of tumor-induced osteomalacia. Tumor-induced osteomalacia due to phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor is a challenging diagnosis to make-patients present with variable clinical and radiologic findings and the culprit neoplasm is often small and can occur anywhere head to toe. We present two cases of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor in the scapular body and plantar foot. In both cases, the patient endured years of debilitating symptoms before a tissue diagnosis

Image cytometric DNA analysis of adrenocortical neoplasms as a prognostic parameter: a clinico-pathologic study of 13 patients.

Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded material of thirteen adrenocortical neoplasms were examined by conventional microscopy, and by DNA image cytometry in Feulgen-stained tissue sections and cytospin preparations. The subsequent clinical course of each patient was reviewed. Seven of the neoplasms were classified according to the histologic criteria of Weiss as adenomas and six as carcinomas. The DNA content and indices of all 13 adrenocortical neoplasms were measured by image cytometry. For the internal standard, the DNA values of the adjacent normal adrenal cells in 10 cases and of nuclei of fibr

Atypical lymphoid infiltrates arising in cutaneous lesions of connective tissue disease.

Atypical lymphoid infiltrates occurring in the setting of connective-tissue disease (CTD) comprise malignant neoplasms of B-cell or T-cell phenotypes and various reactive lymphoid hyperplasias, such as myoepithelial sialadenitis, lymphocytic thyroiditis, and lymphocytic interstitial pneumonitis. We describe 17 patients with atypical lymphoid infiltrates arising in cutaneous lesions of CTD, the spectrum of which included lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, relapsing polychondritis, and lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. There were two principal categories, pseudolymphoma and malignant lymphoma,

Cutaneous and subcutaneous fibrolipomas in 236 dogs, 2017-2024: a retrospective case series and comparative review.

Fibrolipoma is a well-recognized benign neoplasm composed of adipocytes transected by fibrous connective tissue, but large population studies on these neoplasms are lacking in veterinary medicine. We retrospectively searched for canine cutaneous and subcutaneous fibrolipomas submitted to the surgical diagnostic pathology service of the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (Athens, GA, USA) between 2017 and 2024. We retrieved 236 neoplasms from 64,560 biopsies. The median age of affected patients was 8 y (±2.8 y), with an average tumor size of 2.9 cm (±2.3 cm). The head was the location affe

Structural variations between pleural and peritoneal mesotheliomas produced in rats by the injection of crocidolite asbestos.

The author studies the ultrastructure of pleural and peritoneal mesotheliomas caused in the rat by the intra-pleural or intra-peritoneal injection of 25 mg of crocidolite. In the peritoneum the tumour is made up chiefly of "connective" type tissue with rare "epithelial" cells. In the pleura, the "epithelial" cells predominate, constituting vast vegetating "papillomatous" zones or "adenomatous" territories. The author recalls Willis' concept, and feels that mesothelial tumours in the rat, caused by asbestos, represent one aspect of the family of mesenchymatous tumours, with their ability to beh

Renal transplacental carcinogenicity of 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene in rats: relationship of renal mesenchymal tumor to congenital mesoblastic nephroma and intralobar nephrogenic rests.

Exposure of rat embryos to 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene (DMPT) results in numerous malformations, but the urogenital system is not affected. In contrast, exposure of rat fetuses to DMPT has been reported to result in renal neoplasms, which were not further classified. To better understand this discrepancy in organotropism of the teratogenic and transplacental carcinogenic processes, the present study was undertaken to characterize the neoplasms induced in rat fetuses exposed to DMPT in utero. Renal neoplasms and persistent mesenchyme were observed in 19.2 and 11.5%, respectively, of the offsp

Late-onset Proteus syndrome with cerebriform connective tissue nevus and subsequent development of intraductal papilloma.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare segmental overgrowth disorder caused by a mosaic activating variant in AKT1. The features of PS are often not present at birth but develop during the first few years of life. We describe a 55-year-old female, whose first symptom of overgrowth, a cerebriform connective tissue nevus, occurred at 19 years of age. We report the identification of the AKT1 c.49G > A p.(Glu17Lys) variant in this progressive lesion, the bony overgrowth, and recurrence after surgical intervention. In the sixth decade of life, this individual developed intraductal papillomas within her ri

Cancer and other causes of death among female textile workers, 1976-78.

Information on usual industry and occupation on North Carolina death certificates indicated that 4,462 white women who died during 1976-78 were former textile industry employees. The relative frequency of cancer and other diseases among decreased textile workers was compared with the cause of death distribution among other white female decedents. Elevated proportional mortality ratios (PMR) were found for the following malignant neoplasms: larynx, PMR=2.8; connective tissue, PMR=2.6; uterine cervix, PMR=2.1; other and unspecified genital organs, PMR=2.7; thyroid, PMR=2.2; and non-Hodgkins lymp
