A Single Pelvic Fibrous Tumor Associated With Doege-Potter Syndrome: A Case Study.

Doege-Potter syndrome (DPS) is a very rare paraneoplastic condition that is marked by hypoglycemia brought on by a solitary fibrous tumor rather than an islet cell tumor. Soft tissue neoplasms termed as solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare and these tumors vary in the site of origin, from the pleural cavity, mediastinum, pericardium, retroperitoneal spaces, liver, thyroid, orbit, bladder, intestines, and soft tissues, while pelvic-derived fibrous tumors are incredibly unusual. There are currently extremely few documented cases and literature reviews both domestically and internationally. In

Intraoral lipoma: report of 3 cases.

Lipoma, a benign tumor of adipose tissue is one of the most common benign neoplasms of the body. However, its occurrence in oral cavity is very rare. It accounts for 1 to 4% of benign neoplasms of mouth affecting predominantly the buccal mucosa, floor of mouth and tongue. We report three cases of intraoral lipoma, two in buccal mucosa and one in labial mucosa. An excisional biopsy was performed and histopathological examination revealed proliferation of mature adipocytes arranged in lobules and separated by fibrous septa. After 3 years follow up, the patients showed no signs of recurrence.

An adolescent presenting with malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the testis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant fibrous histiocytoma is a very common subtype of soft-tissue sarcoma in middle and late adulthood. However, malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the testis is very rare in adolescents. CASE PRESENTATION: We report here the case of a 14-year-old Han Chinese boy, who presented with left scrotal mass lasting for 20 days along with distending pain for 5 days. A physical examination revealed a chicken egg-sized, firm, well-defined mass and unclear epididymis. A B-scan ultrasonography of the left scrotum displayed a 9.0×5.2×4.5cm medium- or low-echoic lobulated mass, which sugg

Giant central ossifying fibroma of the maxilla presenting with a pus discharging intra-oral sinus.

Central ossifying fibroma (COF) is a rare benign fibro-osseous neoplasm which has a predilection for mandible and is encountered in middle aged women. It arises from mesenchymal blast cells of the periodontal ligament, and with a potential to form fibrous tissue, cementum and bone. It is a well circumscribed lesion mainly comprising of fibrous tissue with varying amounts of bone or cementum or osteo-cementum like tissue. We present an uncommon case of COF of the maxilla in a 35-year-old male who presented with a pus discharging sinus in the maxilla. Due to the bizarre size of the lesion we hav

[Solitary fibrous tumor of the urinary bladder].

INTRODUCTION: A solitary fibrous tumor is a rare circumscribed neoplasm that was long known in the pleura and has now described in many organs and soft tissues. Prognosis is favorable after complete excision. CASE: We report a solitary tumor fibrous located in the bladder of a 38-year-old man with dysuria and a palpable abdominal mass. DISCUSSION: Solitary fibrous tumors are reported very rarely in the urinary bladder. They may mimic other nonepithelial tumors in this site. Diagnosis based only on pathological features is difficult. When complete excision is possible, prognosis is generally

Solitary fibrous tumor of the lacrimal gland fossa.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors are rare spindle cell neoplasms that most commonly arise in the pleura. Recently, solitary fibrous tumors of the orbital soft tissues have been described. The authors report the first case of solitary fibrous tumor arising in the lacrimal gland fossa and discuss features that may distinguish solitary fibrous tumor from other lacrimal fossa lesions. METHODS: A left lacrimal gland fossa tumor was excised via lateral orbitotomy from a 76-year-old man and analyzed by light microscopy. Immunohistochemical studies were performed using antibodies to CD34, vimentin

EWSR1::ATF1 fusions characterize a group of extra-abdominal epithelioid and round cell mesenchymal neoplasms, phenotypically overlapping with sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcomas, and intra-abdominal FET::CREB fusion neoplasms.

With the increasing use of next generation sequencing in soft tissue pathology, particularly in neoplasms not fitting any World Health Organization (WHO) category, the spectrum of EWSR1 fusion-associated soft tissue neoplasms has been expanding significantly. Although recurrent EWSR1::ATF1 fusions were initially limited to a triad of mesenchymal neoplasms including clear cell sarcoma of soft tissue, angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma and malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (MGNET), this family has been expanding. We herein describe 4 unclassified extra-abdominal soft tissue (n = 3)

Pulmonary Metastases from a Hemangiopericytoma/Solitary Fibrous Tumor Spectrum Neoplasm in a Patient with a Poorly Documented Thigh Tumor: A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), historically termed hemangiopericytoma (HPC), is a rare fibroblastic mesenchymal neoplasm with variable biological behavior. Pulmonary involvement is uncommon and may represent either a primary thoracic tumor or metastatic disease from an extrapulmonary site. Its clinical course ranges from indolent, surgically curable disease to aggressive malignancy with local recurrence and distant dissemination. In this retrospective case, confirmatory STAT6 immunohistochemistry was unavailable; therefore, the tumor is described as a heman

From the archives of the AFIP: benign fibrous tumors and tumorlike lesions of the mesentery: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Mesenteric fibromatosis, sclerosing mesenteritis, inflammatory pseudotumor, and extrapleural solitary fibrous tumor constitute a loosely associated group of benign fibrous tumors and tumorlike lesions of the mesentery. These lesions are linked histologically by the presence of fibroblasts or fibrosis and anatomically by their location within the mesentery. Although rare, and distinctly different in pathogenesis and biologic behavior, these fibrous lesions have pathologic and radiologic features that overlap with one another and with more common neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions of the mesen

Lymphangiectatic fibrolipomatous polyp of the palatine tonsil.

A rare benign polypoid tumor of the right palatine tonsil is described in a 23 year old male. It contained dilated lymphatic channels surrounded by fibrous tissue and foci of mature fat. The features of this lesion add support to the hypothesis that benign tumors of tonsil may be hamartomas of tonsil rather than true neoplasms. The differential diagnosis of polypoid lesions of the tonsil is discussed.

Paratesticular fibrous pseudotumor: a report of five cases and literature review.

Paratesticular fibrous pseudotumor is a rare benign tumor that originates from intrascrotal tissue, such as tunica vaginalis, epididymis, or spermatic cord. Five cases of fibrous pseudotumor in our hospital were reviewed retrospectively, and the clinical manifestations were analyzed. Three cases of unilateral nodules, comprising one case located in the tunica vaginalis and two cases located in the epididymis, underwent local excision of the unilateral nodule. Two cases of diffuse incrassation in the tunica vaginalis underwent right radical orchiectomy. Postoperative pathological examination sh

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma and malignant histiocytosis in the dog--convergent or divergent phenotypic differentiation?

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) and malignant histiocytosis (MH) are neoplasms with different histologic appearances and consequently a different putative cell of origin. Recently, the biopsy and necropsy services at the University of Pennsylvania have seen many canine soft tissue sarcomas that have the gross and histologic appearances of both MH and MFH within the same animal. A retrospective histologic evaluation of 263 cases diagnosed originally as either MH or MFH reclassified these neoplasms into 77 cases that were exclusively MH, 110 cases exclusively MFH, and 76 cases with features

Intraoral benign mesenchymoma: a report of 10 cases and review of the literature.

A benign mesenchymoma is an unencapsulated soft tissue neoplasm composed of 2 or more mature mesenchymal tissues not normally associated with each other, excluding fibrous connective tissue. No single mesenchymal tissue should predominate with respect to the other mesenchymal elements. Ten well-documented examples of intraoral benign mesenchymoma have been reported in the English language literature. The purpose of this report is to document 10 additional cases and to review the clinicopathologic characteristics of this uncommon tumor.

[Fat-forming solitary fibrous tumor with NAB2/ STAT6 gene fusion. Case report of genial location and literature review].

The lipomatous variety solitary fibrous tumor is a soft tissue neoplasm composed of mature adipose tissue and hemangiopericytoma areas. A 53-year-old man consulted for facial asymmetry and maxillofacial magnetic resonance imaging showed a cystic lesion, 3 x 2 cm in size, in front of the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus. Histologically, there were dense spindle cells expressing CD34, CD99, Bcl-2, and STAT6, myxoid zones, hemangiopericytomatous blood vessels, and S100 positive adipocytes. NAB2/STAT6 gene fusion was revealed by RT-PCR. The main differential diagnosis was raised with the spind

Primary Pulmonary Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) cases are classified within the group of nonclassified sarcomas. The etiopathogenesis is unclear; however, MFH commonly develops in scar tissue and in areas exposed to radiation. MFH is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults and may be borne in the lungs, chest wall, mediastinum, or other tissues. Primary MFH of the lung constitutes less than 0.2% of all pulmonary neoplasms; thus, an optimal treatment strategy has not yet been elucidated. We aimed to report a case of MFH of the lung with subsequent treatment administration.

Immunoreactivity for calretinin and keratins in desmoid fibromatosis and other myofibroblastic tumors: a diagnostic pitfall.

Calretinin is an intracellular calcium-binding EF-hand protein of the calmodulin superfamily. It plays a role in diverse cellular functions, including message targeting and intracellular calcium signaling. It is expressed in the mesothelium, mast cells, some neural cells, and fat cells, among others. Because of its relative specificity for mesothelial neoplasms, calretinin is widely used as one of the primary immunohistochemical markers for malignant mesothelioma and in differentiating it from adenocarcinoma. On the basis of our sporadic observation on calretinin immunoreactivity in desmoid fi

Sonographic findings of a large vulvar lipoma.

Lipomas of the vulva are rare benign tumors that consist of mature fat cells often interspersed with strands of fibrous connective tissue. They arise from the vulvar fatty pads and present as soft, multilobulated subcutaneous neoplasms. Histological examination reveals a thin capsule surrounding a lobular proliferation of lipocytes. Liposarcomas of the vulva have been described rarely. We present the sonographic findings of a large lipoma of the vulva, and demonstrate the contribution of topical application of a high-frequency transvaginal transducer in depicting lobular structural features, c

Oral spindle cell neoplasms: a review of 307 cases.

The infrequent exposure of pathologists to soft tissue spindle cell neoplasms coupled with overlapping histologic patterns can often make diagnosis challenging. We reviewed all nonodontogenic spindle cell neoplasms seen between 1982 and 2002 (86,162 total accessions). Diagnoses were reclassified according to current standards supplemented with immunohistochemistry. Of the 307 neoplasms reviewed (0.36% of total accessions), neural tumors were the most common benign entities, accounting for 21% of total cases. Kaposi's sarcoma was the most common malignancy, accounting for 67% of all cases. Diag
