A total of 91 men had histologically documented late recurrences of testicular germ cell tumors characterized by a complete response to treatment with a subsequent disease-free interval of at least 2 years and no evidence of a second primary lesion. Ninety percent of the patients for whom information was available received chemotherapy shortly after their initial diagnosis of testicular germ cell tumors; most of the other patients were known to have stage I disease initially. Overall, 60% of patients had teratoma in their late recurrences, including 20 patients (22%) in whom teratoma was the o

AIMS: Germ cell neoplasia in situ (GCNIS) is the precursor of GCNIS-derived testicular germ cell tumours, including seminomas and non-seminomas. Most non-seminomas show mixed histology, often including components of seminoma. A small subset presents as pure non-seminomatous germ cell tumors. In these neoplasms, the absence of invasive seminoma. raises the possibility that reprogramming to non-seminoma may occur at an early in-situ stage (i.e., within the spermatogonial niche). This study examined GCNIS associated with pure embryonal carcinoma (EC) and postpubertal-type yolk sac tumour (YST) us

Originally, expression of the CD30 antigen was shown to be typical of the tumour cells of Hodgkin's disease (HD) and of anaplastic large cell lymphomas (ALCLs). In reactive lymphoid tissue, CD30 is expressed only in a small population of activated lymphoid blasts. Since then, several reports have been published describing CD30 expression in non-lymphoid tissues and malignancies, such as embryonal carcinomas (ECs), seminomas, cultivated macrophages, two histiocytic neoplasms, decidual cells, and mesotheliomas. As CD30 detection is important in the differential diagnosis of HD and ALCL, the expr

Testicular neoplasms are not commonly found in children and are a formidable threat if treated inappropriately. However, there is no consensus regarding its management. This study aimed to create a holistic picture of the interprofessional team in the management of malignant testicular tumors. Seventeen patients had mixed germ cell tumors, 15 had pure yolk sac tumors, 2 had immature teratomas, 2 had teratocarcinomas, and 1 had a sex cord stromal tumor. Five lesions were diagnosed as nongerm cell tumors: 2 embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas, 2 lymphomas, and 1 acute myeloid leukemia. At initial presen

BACKGROUND Teratomas are embryonal neoplasms that contain tissues derived from 1 or more of the 3 germ layers. They commonly are found in the sacrococcygeal-gonadal location, sometimes in midline locations such as the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, and head and neck region. Primary rectal teratomas are extremely rare. Extragonadal teratomas can originate from pluripotent germ cells present in abnormal embryonic rests. CASE REPORT Here, we report a rare case of a primary mature, solid teratoma of the rectum. A 68-year-old woman presented with hematochezia and denied any history of abdominal pain

Glycoproteins isolated from human milk fat globule membranes, designated epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), have been detected immunohistochemically in most nonneoplastic epithelia and are potentially a highly effective marker for establishing the epithelial nature of neoplastic cells. With commercially available monoclonal antibodies and an indirect immunoperoxidase technique, EMA localization was evaluated in paraffin-embedded tissues from a wide variety of neoplasms (320 specimens). Adenocarcinomas from various primary sites (breast, lung, colon, stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, prostate, en

Cryptorchidism in males constitutes a notable risk factor for both infertility and testicular cancer. Infertility in adulthood is closely linked to the germ cell status in childhood. Furthermore, the significance of germ cell status is important as more than 95% of all reported testicular malignancies are germ cell tumors. The review aims to elucidate the pathogenesis of germ cells in cryptorchid testes concerning their association with infertility and testicular malignancies. Impaired germ cell numbers are evident in cryptorchid testes even during antenatal and neonatal stages. In cryptorchid

Teratomas are neoplasms of the embryonic tissues that typically arise in the gonadal and sacrococcygeal regions. Primary adrenal teratoma are extremely rare and only few cases were published in literature. Teratomas contain more than one embryonic germ cell layer, mostly elements derived from ectoderm and least frequently from endoderm. Though these tumors are mostly benign, malignant transformation may occur. Treatment includes surgical removal. We report a rare case of a primary mature retroperitoneal teratoma in an infant with liver metastasis. Imaging modality CT and MRI were useful in dia

Human germ-cell tumors (GCTs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms. Based on epidemiology, anatomical site of presentation, histology, chromosomal constitution, and pattern of genomic imprinting, GCTs are classified into five entities. Within the testis, three types of GCTs can be diagnosed: type I (teratomas and yolk-sac tumors of neonates and infants); type II (seminomas and nonseminomas); type III (spermatocytic seminomas). Here the focus is on the type II GCTs, the most frequent type in the adult testis (so-called TGCTs). They can also be diagnosed in dysgenetic gonads (an incomplete or

Benign cystic ovarian teratomas are neoplasms with a 46,XX karyotype originating from a single abnormal ovarian germ cell after the first meiotic division. Since these tumors lack the Y chromosome (required for production of the H-Y antigen that is presumably obligatory for embryonic male sexual differentiation), identifiable male sex organ structures should not be found in the tumor. We report a case in which prostatic tissue was identified in a benign cystic ovarian teratoma.

Teratomas are gonadal or extragonadal neoplasms, derived from the three embryonic tissues, composed of germ cells of the neuroectoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm. Congenital orbital teratoma (OCT) commonly affects the left orbit, primarily affecting women over men at a ratio of 2:1. We present the case of a female patient of 9 days of extrauterine life with a left mature congenital orbital teratoma. The orbit and oculoplastic service performed an orbital exenteration and total resection of the tumor mass.

Primary malignant germ cell tumors of the mediastinum are extremely rare among females. This report describes such a tumor arising in the mediastinum of a 26-year-old woman and correlates immunohistochemical studies of the neoplasm with serum tumor markers. Microscopic examination of the tumor revealed an embryonal carcinoma with choriocarcinoma, the latter consisting of sheets of polygonal cells intimately related to multinucleate giant cells that contained beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-HCG) when stained immunohistochemically. The serum beta-HCG level at the time of diagnosis was 8,

Although the greatest incidence of testicular neoplasms is in the age group 20 to 35.9% of all intrascrotal tumors occur in males over 60. They may be classified into four major groups based on the tissue origin of the tumor. The most common group comprising 50% are lymphoreticular neoplasms or lymphomas. They occur in both blacks and whites, result in a diffuse enlargement of the testis and commonly involve the epididymis and cord. Prognosis is poor and survival is usually less than two years. Germ cell tumors comprise 25% and the tumors are usually large. Most of them are the classical semin

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by germline mutations in the FLCN gene, characterized by cutaneous fibrofolliculomas, pulmonary cysts, and an increased risk of renal neoplasms. Parotid oncocytoma is an infrequently reported extracutaneous manifestation of the syndrome. A 30-year-old man with a prior history of testicular embryonal cell carcinoma presented with a right-sided neck mass. Workup of the parotid lesion ultimately led to a new diagnosis of BHD, confirmed by FLCN germline mutation testing. The patient underwent right parotidectomy, which was

Mature teratomas are the most common ovarian neoplasms, accounting for 40% to 50% of ovarian tumors, and are histologically defined by the presence of multiple lineages of mature differentiated cells derived from one or more of the 3 embryonic germ layers; ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. Neuroectodermal and neural crest differentiation can be observed in mature teratomas, but it is uncommon to find secondary tumors that arise from the neural crest lineage. Herein we report the uncommon finding of a ganglioneuroma arising in a mature cystic teratoma in a 26-yr-old woman.

Testicular germ cell tumours (TGCTs), the most frequent solid tumour of the young men, originate from the primitive germ cells. They share some pluripotency stem-cell markers which may help to distinguish between seminoma, the most frequent TGCTs and non-seminoma tumours, such as embryonal carcinoma, teratocarcinoma or choriocarcinoma. Due probably to the propensity of seminoma to apoptosis, only two cell lines originated from pure testicular seminoma, TCam-2 and JKT-1 have been up to now, established, maintained and proposed as representative models of human testicular seminoma. However, both

Intracranial germ cell tumors (iGCTs) are rare central nervous system neoplasms predominantly affecting children, adolescents, and young adults. They exhibit striking geographic and gender predilection, with a higher incidence in East Asian populations and a marked male preponderance. Clinically, iGCTs encompass two broad entities-germinomatous and non-germinomatous tumors, with the latter comprising embryonal carcinoma, yolk sac tumor, choriocarcinoma, immature teratoma, and mixed germ cell histologies. This histopathological distinction has critical prognostic implications and remains the co

Carcinoma in situ of the testis (CIS) is the uniform precursor of testicular germ-cell tumours. Morphologically, CIS consists of large, intratubular, gonocyte-like cells with large nuclei and abundant glycogen. CIS cells are probably derived from primordial germ cells and are supposed to be present in the testis of a future testis cancer patient at the time of birth. CIS cells appear to spread inside the seminiferous tubules until CIS progresses to invasive cancer. Diagnosis is best achieved by surgical biopsy of the testis and subsequent immunohistological staining of placental alkaline phosp
