Mesothelial/monocytic incidental cardiac excrescences (MICE) are unusual findings during the histological analysis of material from the pericardium, mediastinum, or other tissues collected in open-heart surgery. Despite their somewhat worrisome histological appearance, they show a benign clinical course, and further treatment is virtually never necessary. Hence, the importance of recognizing the entity relays in its differential diagnosis, as an unaware medical pathologist may misinterpret it for a malignant neoplasm. Other mesothelial and histiocytic proliferative lesions, sharing very close

Adenomatoid tumors are neoplasms of mesothelial origin, usually occurring in the male and female genital tracts. Extragenital localization sites such as adrenal glands are rare but have been reported. When found in the adrenals, they represent great clinical, radiological and pathological diagnostic challenge, with wide range of differential diagnoses to be considered. We present a case of a 30 years old female, with incidental ultrasound finding of unilateral tumor in the right adrenal gland. Multi slices CT scan was of value in localizing this tumor, but not in the precise diagnosis. The tum

BACKGROUND: Metastases from ovarian neoplasms are commonly encountered in peritoneal fluids. In addition, reactive mesothelial cells in effusion specimens can mimic ovarian serous carcinoma, making the diagnosis difficult. Calretinin has been recognized as a reliable immunohistochemical marker for mesothelial cells, whereas WT1 has proven useful in the diagnosis of ovarian serous carcinoma. This can present a diagnostic pitfall in effusion cytology, because mesothelial cells can demonstrate immunoreactivity for WT1. Recently, paired box gene 8 (PAX8) has been used in distinguishing ovarian fro

Several articles have been published recently that discuss the role of electron microscopy in the diagnosis and study of gynecologic neoplasms. It becomes apparent from those works and the review just presented that, although an ultrastructural study is not necessary for reaching a diagnosis of many of these tumors, it may be necessary or supportive in identifying the more poorly differentiated ones. Furthermore, electron microscopy is valuable in providing evidence for the histogenesis of some of these neoplasms. Unfortunately for the pathologist, a certain level of morphologic differentiatio

Adenomatoid tumors are benign neoplasms of mesothelial phenotype, commonly found in the genital tracts. Hepatic adenomatoid tumors are extremely uncommon and can present diagnostic challenges, particularly when mixed with other histologic elements. Here we report an adenomatoid tumor with prominent admixed cavernous hemangioma-like vessels in the liver of a 58-year-old woman. Grossly, the tumor appeared as a pedunculated lesion on the hepatic surface with cystic spaces filled with blood. Microscopic examination revealed numerous blood vessels of varying sizes intermingled with anastomosing tub

Asbestos exposure leads to malignant mesothelioma (MM), a deadly neoplasm of mesothelial cells of various locations. Although there is no doubt about the role of asbestos in MM tumorigenesis, mechanisms are still not well explored. Recently, our group demonstrated that asbestos causes inflammasome priming and activation in mesothelial cells, which in part is dependent on oxidative stress. Our current study sheds light on yet another mechanism of inflammasome activation by asbestos. Here we show the role of actin polymerization in asbestos-induced activation of the nod-like receptor pyrin domai

Inclusions of benign tissues in lymph nodes are most often aberrant glandular tissue, including endosalpingiosis, the thyroid, parotid, breast, and pancreas. Nonglandular inclusions are rare and include nevus cells and decidua. Mesothelial cells in lymph nodes are exceedingly rare; only eight cases have been reported in mediastinal lymph nodes and three cases in abdominal lymph nodes. The incidence of benign mesothelial cells in mediastinal lymph nodes in patients with a history of pericarditis or pleuritis is reported in this study. A retrospective search showed eight cases with removal of me

The histogenesis of adenomatoid tumour has continued to provoke debate since Golden and Ash suggested the term in 1945 for a characteristic benign neoplasm typically found in the uterus, fallopian tube or epididymis. Endothelial, epithelial, mesonephric, müllerian and mesothelial histogenesis have been suggested. The balance of evidence suggests mesothelial derivation, but two recent studies point to endothelial origin for at least some of these tumours. Twenty-two histologically typical adenomatoid tumours were studied by electron microscopy, mucin histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. Ult

This essay considers selected peritoneal lesions many of which were the subject of studies coauthored by Dr Robert E. Scully. His article on multilocular peritoneal inclusion cysts has largely led to these lesions being considered non-neoplastic, eschewing the term cystic mesothelioma. These cysts are often associated with reactive mural mesothelial proliferations that can potentially lead to a misdiagnosis of mesothelioma. Clinical findings, such as a common association with endometriosis or prior operations, can prompt consideration of a reactive lesion. Mesothelial hyperplasia may be diffic

AIMS: To illustrate the macroscopic, light microscopic and immunophenotypic similarities that exist between primary pleural thymic epithelial tumours and diffuse malignant mesothelioma. To investigate the expression of the mesothelial markers, cytokeratin (CK) 5/6, calretinin and thrombomodulin in a series of mediastinal thymic epithelial tumours.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Over a 10-year period, 64 diffuse pleural tumours of non-mesothelial histogenesis were identified in the files of referrals to the South Wales regional thoracic centre (Llandough Hospital, Cardiff). Of these, five pleural tumour

Adenomatoid tumors are benign mesothelial tumors most commonly found in the paratesticular structures, especially the epididymis. Herein, we report a case of adenomatoid tumor originating in the tunica albuginea and mimicking an intratesticular neoplasm. We review the ultrasonographic presentation and literature regarding adenomatoid tumors originating in the tunica albuginea and testicular parenchyma.

Mesothelial inclusion cyst is a rare benign tumour that has only 130 cases reported in the literature. Accurate diagnosis and optimal management of this condition remains uncertain. We report a 51-year-old African gentleman, whom presents with abdominal pain and constipation. A computed tomography scan was performed and revealed a large cystic lesion in the right paracolic gutter. The differential diagnosis included appendiceal mucinous neoplasm, cystic tuberculosis and duplication cyst. A laparotomy was performed due to his symptoms and size of the cyst. Macroscopically, the tumour had a size

An autopsy case with an incidentally discovered adenomatoid tumor (AT) arising in the right adrenal gland of a 34-yr-old man with AIDS is presented. The immediate cause of death was disseminated coccidioidomycosis. The affected right adrenal gland was partially substituted by a firm 3.O cm nodule enclosed by cortical adrenal tissue. Histologically, the tumor had the typical appearance of those adenomatoid neoplasms described in the genital tract. The mesothelial origin of the neoplasm was confirmed by immunopositive cells for low weight cytokeratin and vimentin. Uncommon neoplasms in the adren

Adenomatoid tumor (AT) is a rare benign mesothelial neoplasm that typically arises in the genital tract. Adrenal involvement is exceptionally uncommon, with fewer than 50 cases reported in the literature. Because of its nonspecific clinical and radiological features, preoperative diagnosis is challenging and malignancy is often suspected. We report the case of a 48-year-old man in whom a left adrenal mass was incidentally discovered during evaluation for renal colic. Hormonal assessment demonstrated a non-functioning adrenal lesion. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a

High level of the CA 125 serum antigen is typically associated with ovarian malignancies. However the CA 125 antigen can also be found in association with inflammation or neoplasms of tissues other than ovaries, i.e. mesothelial cells, mullerian duct derivatives and gastroenteric tract. Therefore the marker is not specific for ovarian neoplasms. In childhood there is not a large experience about clinical meaning of high CA 125 serum levels. We report a case in a 14-year-old patient, female, affected by hydronephrosis. Our case confirms that high CA 125, especially in childhood, is not necessar

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a neoplasm involving mesothelial cells of the pleura. Both local and distant metastases may develop, although the latter are less common and it is extremely rare for cutaneous metastases to appear as a solitary lesion on the scalp. We present the case of a 54-year-old woman with a 2-year history of unresectable left pleural mesothelioma treated with chemotherapy, who had developed a painful lump on the scalp one month prior to consultation. Skin metastases of mesothelioma must be differentiated from primary neoplasms, and immunohistochemistry is fundamental to

Well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumor (WDPMT) is a rare neoplasm characterized by a distinct papillary architecture, bland cytological features, and a propensity for superficial spread without stromal invasion. We herein report the diagnosis and management of a patient with pleural WDPMT presenting predominantly with recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax and pleural effusion, along with a review of the current literature on this entity. The patient was a 58-year-old female who presented with a two-week history of chest tightness and dyspnea on a background of recurrent spontaneous pneum

Primary epididymal tumors are rare. Adenomatoid tumors comprise 30% of paratesticular tumors. They are benign neoplasms originating from mesothelial cells. On the other hand, leiomyomas, originating from smooth muscle cells, are less common in paratesticular region. Leiomyoadenomatoid tumor is a benign tumor which combines the morphologic features of adenomatoid tumor and leiomyoma. To the best of knowledge, only two cases of leiomyoadenomatoid tumor in the paratesticular location have been reported in the literature. We document another such case.

The mesothelium, which consists of a monolayer of mesothelial cells, extends over the surface of the serosal cavities (pleura, pericardium, peritoneum and tunica vaginalis). Mesothelial tumours of the tunica vaginalis is rare compared with those arise from pleura or peritoneum. According to World Health Organization 2022 Classification of Urinary and Male Genital Tumours (5th edition), mesothelial tumours of the tunica vaginalis were categorized into adenomatoid tumour, well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumour (WDPMT) and mesothelioma. Since WDPMT of tunica vaginalis was rare, there wa

Adenomatoid tumor is a benign mesothelial neoplasm of the paratesticular region in males but can also occur in female genital tracts. The epididymis is the most common site of involvement and constitutes 32% of paratesticular neoplasms. We diagnosed a case of adenomatoid tumor on cytopathology in 24 years old male, who presented with mass lesion right epididymis since 2 months. The diagnosis was confirmed on histopathology and immunohistochemistry after surgical excision of the nodule.
