Tumor induced osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome caused by mesenchymal tumors that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). Patients complain of progressive bone pain, muscle weakness and brittle fractures. Delayed diagnosis of osteomalacia caused by a tumor is often found in clinical practice. When verifying the exact localization of the neoplasm, radical removal within healthy tissues is recommended. The article considers a clinical example of FGF23 tumor induced osteomalacia with localization of neoplasm in the tympanic cavity.

Pediatric neoplasms with a myofibroblastic differentiation are frequent in children, in particular myofibroma. Recently, a novel deep soft tissue myofibroblastic neoplasm has been described with high cellularity, a smooth muscle phenotype and SRF-RELA fusion. We report the case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with a tumor of the deep soft tissue of the arm, with overlapping histological features with the recently described SRF-RELA group of myofibromas but differing by the presence of calcifications, a novel SRF-STAT6 fusion transcript and nuclear expression of STAT6. No local recurrence no

CONTEXT: Perivascular epithelial cell tumors (PEComas) are a family of rare mesenchymal neoplasms which share cellular, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural characteristics but are found in different visceral and soft tissue sites. PEComas of the pancreas are extremely rare neoplasms.
CASE REPORT: We describe a 49-year-old male who was incidentally diagnosed with a pancreatic mass. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided biopsy suggested a PEComa. An uneventful pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was thus performed. The tumor was a solid well-circumscribed mass in the pancreatic head with dila

The authors describe a patient with recurrent perineurioma arising in the subcutaneous tissue of the dorsal forearm and extending along the forearm fascia. Soft tissue perineurioma is a rare, originally benign peripheral nerve sheath neoplasm arising from the perineurium, a protective cell barrier surrounding the individual fascicles in peripheral nerves. Perineurioma has only recently been recognized as an entity distinct from other nerve sheath tumors, such as schwannoma and neurofibroma, with unique morphologic, ultrastructural, and immunoreactive features. The recurrent tumor had converted

UNLABELLED: Patients with dermatomyositis (DM) or polymyositis (PM) were studied retrospectively. The patients were divided into four groups: definite PM 24, probable PM 19, definite DM 34 and mild-early DM 25 cases. PM patients complained more often proximal muscle weakness [p <0.01]. DM patients complained more arthralgia [p <0.05], dysphagia [p <0.03] and weight loss [p <0.04]. Five patients had a malignant neoplasm and 9 had other connective-tissue disease. DM presented higher ESR than PM [p <0.002]. PM presented more significant increase in creatine kinase (CK) [p <0.02] and in alanine am

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) encompass a wide and unusual group of neoplasms with features of neural differentiation. They most commonly present as spindle cell neoplasms and it can be difficult to differentiate them from other spindle cell neoplasms such as leiomyosarcomas, fibrosarcomas and synovial sarcomas. Strict criteria need to be applied in order to make the diagnosis of MPNSTs. Helpful features include contiguity with a nerve or an association with von Recklinghausen disease. The use of immunohistochemical stains may also help to confirm the diagnosis. Markers suc

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) is a rare variant of common benign smooth muscle neoplasm. We report a case of BML in a 45-year-old premenopausal woman with a significant smoking history and no previous history of cervical cancer screening. The patient presented with vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, a necrotic mass in the vagina, and an incidental finding of diffuse pulmonary nodules on chest imaging. A total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) was performed for symptomatic management and adequate tissue sampling followed by fine needle biopsy of a pulm

Lipomas are the most common subtype of benign soft tissue neoplasms and can occur anywhere in the body. Differentiation into a diversity of mesenchymal elements, such as blood vessels, fibrous tissue or muscle, is a frequent event. However, the presence of bone or cartilage in these tumors is extraordinarily rare with very few cases reported in the head and neck area. We report a case of an 'osteochondrolipoma' of the chest wall, in a young individual, providing a rationale in support of this as a possible and distinctive histologic subtype of lipomas, as well as discussion in the differential

Mammary hamartomas are unusual lesions with distinctive radiologic and pathologic features. They are well circumscribed, mobile tumors showing no adherence to skin or muscle. Mammographic studies show a peripheral, luscent halo, and the mass is radiographically similar in pattern to a normal breast ("breast within a breast"). Calcification is not present. Histologically, these encapsulated lesions are composed of various breast tissue components such as ducts, lobules, stroma prominently adipose, and smooth muscle, without any particular arrangement. Local surgical resection is the treatment o

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are the most common benign renal tumours. Most of these neoplasms are found incidentally on imaging. However, symptomatic presentation does exist. Renal AMLs are typically composed of smooth muscle, blood vessels, and adipose tissue. Because of the abundant fat tissue, they give a characteristic appearance on imaging and are therefore easily diagnosed. However, sometimes they contain too little fat to be detected. This increases the difficulty in differentiating them from renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Management of AML is based on clinical presentation and should be indivi

A 61-year-old Caucasian man presented with otalgia, dysarthria, and weight loss. Neurological examination revealed palatal hypomotility, and weakness of the facial and tongue muscles. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head demonstrated the presence of a soft tissue mass in the clivus. Histologic examination of resected tumor disclosed well-differentiated thyroid follicles that invaded the local osseous tissues. Physical examination and radioiodine images of the thyroid gland were normal. The serum thyroglobulin concentration was markedly elevated (1011 ng/mL). A 0.9-cm well-differentiated beni

OBJECTIVE: Mineralization in leiomyosarcoma, a malignant tumor of smooth muscle, has not been widely recognized. In this article, we report our experience with four cases of primary leiomyosarcoma of soft tissue or bone in which mineralization was visible on either radiography or CT. In none of the cases was the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma considered before biopsy. In one case of a soft-tissue leiomyosarcoma, the presence of mineralization was a factor that led to the misinterpretation of the needle biopsy specimen as soft-tissue osteosarcoma.
CONCLUSION: Histologically, mineralization in lei

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a malignant neoplasm of smooth muscle cell origin, is relatively rare in birds. This study presents the occurrence of this tumour in a 2-year-old male budgerigar. The bird was brought to the Ashian Veterinary Hospital with complaints of swelling in the medial area of the left leg. Clinical examination and radiological imaging confirmed the presence of soft tissue swelling in the medial region of the left leg. Empirical antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy were used to distinguish infectious inflammation from the tumour mass. After 12 days, a clinical diagnosis of susp

Multinucleated giant cells (MGCs) are a prominent histological feature of various mesenchymal neoplasms and are often considered a criterion of malignancy. Mesenchymal neoplasms with MGCs for which the cell lineage is unclear generally are referred to as giant cell sarcomas. Here we characterize the gross, histologic, and immunohistochemical features of 90 giant cell sarcomas in domestic pet rabbits. Based on the anatomic location and histologic and immunohistochemical findings, 18 cases were classified as histiocytic sarcomas (HS) and 72 cases as anaplastic sarcomas (AS). At postmortem examin

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic features, immunophenotype and genetic changes of perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms (PEComa).
METHODS: A total of 25 cases of PEComa located in various anatomic sites were selected for immunohistochemical staining (SP or EnVision method). TFE3 fluorescence in-situ hybridization was also performed to determine the TFE3 gene status.
RESULTS: The age of patient ranged from 21 to 61 years (mean = 43 years). The male-to-female ratio was 1: 1.3. Histologically, 22 cases represented conventional angiomyolipomas, composed of a mixture of adipose tissue,

The tumor associated antigen RCAS1 (receptor-binding cancer antigen expressed on SiSo cells) expressed with high frequency in various cancer and trophoblast cells, inhibits growth of estrogen receptor-expressing cells and induces apoptosis. Because previous reports demonstrated RCAS1 presence only by non-quantitative immunocytochemistry methods, we decided to use a Western blotting with anti-RCAS1 monoclonal antibodies for estimation of the relative content of the tumor-associated antigen. One hundred tissue samples were assayed (neoplasms, chronic inflammatory diseases, healthy tissues, troph

Smooth muscle tumors presenting as mediastinal soft tissue masses are rare and are often mistaken for other neoplasms. Benign tumors of the esophagus account for fewer than 1% of all esophageal tumors, the most common of which are leiomyomas. They are frequently located in the lower third of the esophagus. We report two cases of esophageal leiomyoma in the thoracic esophagus which were firstly presented as huge mediastinal mass with intermittent dysphagia and radiologically flecks of calcification.

Thirty beign cystic teratomas of the ovary were studied by immunofluroesecence, using specific human antisera for (a) squamous epithelial intercellular areas (pemphigus sera), (b) squamous epithelial basement membranes (bullous pemphigoid sera), (c) smooth muscle (chronic active hepatitis sera, and (d) striated muscle (thymona sera). Squamous epithelial intercellular staining was seen in all specimens and was present in the basal cell layers as well as in the prickle cell layers, suggesting a slow regeneration rate for the squamous epithelial lining of these tumors.
