Sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma: a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of 6 cases.

Teratocarcinosarcoma (TCS) is a rare and unusual malignant neoplasm of the sinonasal tract with a heterogenous morphology and an aggressive behavior. Patients are predominantly adults with a male predominance. The aim of this study was to describe clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of 6 cases of TCS. The ages ranged from 18 to 67 years (mean, 33 years) with a male-to-female ratio of 5:1. Most tumors were located in the nasal cavity. Nasal obstruction and epistaxis were the common presenting symptoms. Histologically, all tumors exhibited a heterogeneous morphology with varying p

Bilateral ptosis as initial presentation of gliomatosis cerebri: case report.

Gliomatosis cerebri is a rare, diffuse glioma of neuroepithelial origin involving more than two cerebral lobes. Clinical presentation of gliomatosis cerebri is variable and depends on the degree, extent, and location of cortical involvement. Signs and symptoms related to supratentorial cortical involvement predominate and the diagnosis is reached through a combination of clinical, radiographic, and histopathological evaluations. This is a report of a young man who presented with visual problems and bilateral ptosis, which were eventually attributed to gliomatosis cerebri. Standard radiation an

Occult hepatic sinusoid tumor of infancy simulating neuroblastoma.

Two infants with hepatosplenomegaly and an occult tumor of hepatic sinusoids are reported. Although secretion of biogenic amines of neuroblastoma was not elevated, infrequent neurosecretory granules were observed by electron microscopy in the cytoplasmic processes of the tumor cells. The infants responded to vincristine and prednisone therapy and are tumor free 8 and 2 years later, respectively. The clinical, radiographic, biochemical, and microscopic findings of these cases are presented. The distinction from other infantile hepatic sinusoid small round cell tumors is based on the light and e

Immunohistochemical detection of p53 protein in tumours of the central nervous system.

The results of immunohistochemical detection of p53 protein in a large variety of CNS neoplasms with the polyclonal antiserum CM1 are presented. Immunoreactivity in at least several cells were regularly found in astrocytic neoplasms including glioblastomas; it was also frequent in medulloblastomas and oligodendrogliomas and could be found in more than 50% of acoustic schwannomas and esthesioneuroblastomas. Meningiomas also showed several immunoreactive cells in about 40% of the cases. Certain neuronal/neuronal-glial tumours (such as central neurocytomas, dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour

Sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma involving nasal cavity, nasopharynx, and all paranasal sinuses with bilateral orbital and intracranial extension: A rare case report.

Sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma (SNTCS) is one of the rarest, aggressive malignant neoplasms of sinonasal tract, consisting of primitive neuroepithelial elements with various malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. Previously described as teratoid carcinosarcoma, malignant teratoma, or blastoma, SNTCS constitutes less than 1% of all cancers and approximately 3% of all malignancies of head and neck region, which is mainly located in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, although tumors occurring in other locations including the nasopharynx and oral cavity have been described. Here, we

Olfactory neuroblastoma: A case report.

Olfactory neuroblastoma (ON) is a rare type of malignant neoplasm originating from the olfactory neuroepithelial cells of the nasal cavity. ON is also known as esthesioneuroblastoma or neuroendocrine carcinoma. The malignancy accounts for <3% of tumors originating in the nasal cavity. Through the nasal cavity, ON may infiltrate the sinuses, the orbit and the cranium. The tumor is characterized by a pattern of slow growth and local recurrences. Treatment options are surgical excision or surgery combined with a radiotherapy (RT) and/or chemotherapy combination treatment. The present study report

Exploring a distinct FGFR2::DLG5 rearrangement in a low-grade neuroepithelial tumor: A case report and mini-review of protein fusions in brain tumors.

We report the novel clinical presentation of a primary brain neoplasm in a 30-year-old man with a mass-like area in the anteromedial temporal lobe. Histopathological analysis revealed a low-grade neuroepithelial tumor with cytologically abnormal neurons and atypical glial cells within the cerebral cortex. Molecular analysis showed a previously undescribed FGFR2::DLG5 rearrangement. We discuss the clinical significance and molecular implications of this fusion event, shedding light on its potential impact on tumor development and patient prognosis. Additionally, an extensive review places the f

Supratentorial giant cell ependymoma.

Ependymomas account for 3 to 9% of all neuroepithelial tumors and, although occurring most often within the ventricular system, they may arise from the extraventricular parenchyma as well. Several histologic patterns of these neoplasm are well known, but little attention has been devoted to a variant composed of giant elements. We describe the case of a 13-year-old girl experiencing a 3-month history of partial seizures in whom cranial magnetic resonance imaging showed an extraventricular, right parietotemporal neoplasm, adherent to the overlying dura mater. Histologic, immunohistochemical and

Clinical and histopathological profile of dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor: An experience from a tertiary care center.

INTRODUCTION: Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) is a rare benign brain tumor predominantly involving children and young adults. Histologically, it corresponds to WHO Grade I tumors; however, it may masquerade aggressive neural tumors such as oligodendroglioma, oligoastrocytoma, pilocytic astrocytoma, and ganglioglioma. The literature on clinical, radiological, and pathological spectrum of DNT is described mostly in the form of case reports, with only a few case series reported till date. METHODS: A retrospective review of files with diagnosis of DNT (2016 to 2018) was made in the D

Neuroepithelial Cyst of the Optic Nerve in a Newborn.

Cystic lesions of the optic nerve are uncommon findings that have been associated with neoplasms, systemic disorders, or described as idiopathic. They have been described in a wide range of ages, with few congenital cysts having been described in infants. Surgical excision of these lesions may lead to significant morbidity as previously reported cases often involved transection of the optic nerve. The authors describe a unique case of a newborn with a rare neuroepithelial cyst of the intraorbital optic nerve that was successfully excised while sparing the optic nerve, ultimately resulting in t

[Therapeutic update on the treatment of craniopharyngiomas].

Craniopharyngioma is an uncommon benign neoplasm, accounting for 1%-3% of all intracranial tumors, and the most common non-neuroepithelial intracranial neoplasm in childhood. Usually, the tumor is confined to the sellar region and the third ventricle, but due to frequent infiltration and adherence to the central nervous system, it often has an unfavorable clinical behavior. Therefore, it is classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a tumor of low or uncertain malignant potential. Endocrine after effects, mainly hypothalamic hypopituitarism, obesity and diabetes insipidus are highlig

Divergent differentiation in pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma. Evidence for a neuronal element and possible relationship to ganglion cell tumors.

We report the detection of cytoplasmic immunoreactivity for neuronal/neuroendocrine antigens in a subpopulation of tumor cells within seven pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas (PXAs). The expression of glial and neuronal polypeptides was examined in routinely prepared surgical resections by immunohistochemistry using well-characterized antibodies that recognize glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), synaptophysin (SYN), and neurofilament triplet polypeptides (NFPs) in microwave-enhanced single- and double-immunolabelling experiments. Each neoplasm contained cells that were immunoreactive for SYN a

Case Report: Unclassifiable cerebellar high-grade neuroepithelial tumor with a CCDC6::RET fusion manifesting explosive recurrence.

A 20-year-old woman presented with a 1-month history of positional vertigo, occipital headaches, and progressive gait ataxia. Neuroimaging demonstrated a 3.7 × 4.2 × 3.3 cm heterogeneously enhancing mass in the left cerebellar hemisphere with fourth-ventricle compression, approximately 8 mm tonsillar herniation, and obstructive hydrocephalus. Urgent resection was performed through a midline suboccipital approach with neuronavigation and fluorescein guidance, achieving gross total removal. Histopathology showed an undifferentiated high-grade neuroepithelial malignancy with brisk mitotic activit

Combined microsurgical-endoscopic paramedian supracerebellar-infratentorial approach for resection of a pineal low-grade glioma.

The authors present the case of a 20-year-old male with a history of headaches and blurred vision found to have a pineal mass and chronic hydrocephalus. The patient initially underwent an endoscopic third ventriculostomy and pineal mass biopsy that revealed a low-grade neuroepithelial neoplasm. A microsurgery-endoscope-assisted paramedian supracerebellar-infratentorial approach was chosen and a gross-total resection was achieved. The patient's postoperative and follow-up course has been unremarkable, with early postoperative imaging demonstrating no residual tumoral mass. The operative video h

It implicates that secretory neuroepithelial-like cells (NECs), putative chemoreceptors are probably responsible for the control of squamous epithelial cells proliferation in the digestive tract during hypoxia in gut breathing fish (GBF). On the other hand, chemoreceptors dysfunction can lead to uncontrolled proliferation and risk of cancer development in mammals, including humans. Intraventricular Tumors.

Intraventricular tumors represent a unique group of intracranial neoplasm separate from the classic division as intra- vs extra-axial masses. Intraventricular tumors are unique because of the diverse pathologic spectrum, including the entire gamut of neuroepithelial and nonneuroepithelial tumors. Most of these tumors are clinically benign presenting with headaches or signs and symptoms of hydrocephalus. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging play a pivotal role in diagnosis and neurosurgical guidance. Though, practically any intracranial tumor can have an intraventricular location,
