Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic dermatosis whose clinical features include mildly erythematous to violaceous flat-topped, polygonal papules. The etiology of lichen planus is unknown, but it has been postulated that immune mechanism is important. Although it is of importance to monitor the course of immune-mediated diseases, there is a limited number of reliable biomarkers which can be used for lichen planus. Neopterin (NP), a 2-amino-4-hydroxy-(1'2'3'-trihydroxypropyl)-pteridine, is secreted by monocytes and macrophages, mainly as a response to INF-gamma secretion by activated T-lymphocytes. T

Reactions, a relatively common phenomenon among leprosy patients in treatment, require early detection and proper management to prevent serious sequelae. It is generally accepted that reactional states are immunologically mediated and, as such, usually improve with immunomodulatory treatments such as corticosteroids or thalidomide. Neopterin, a product of gamma-interferon-activated macrophages, is a marker for cell-mediated immune activation and may be useful to detect reactional states in leprosy. Here, we compared neopterin levels in single serum samples from leprosy patients with and withou

Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is a systemic inflammatory disease etiologically related to infection with group A streptococcus characterized by a broad spectrum of disorders of cellular and humoral immunity. To estimate the activity of the immunopathological process and to forecast myocardial derangement in ARF patients, measurements were made of neopterin in the serum of ARF patients. Nine men with ARF serving in the armed forces were examined. The control group comprised 24 donors. The reference group included 13 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and 14 with chronic myocarditis. The mean le

BACKGROUND: Neopterin is a protein produced by monocytes/macrophages. It has been considered a biomarker of immune activation in several disorders. However, there are few studies in allergic rhinitis (AR). This study evaluated the serum neopterin levels in patients with pollen-induced AR or treated with sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) and in healthy subjects.
METHODS: 146 subjects (70 males, median age 30.5 years): 56 with moderate-severe persistent AR, 40 with AR and successfully treated with 2 year SLIT, and 50 healthy controls were consecutively evaluated outside the pollen season. A skin

We quantitated serum neopterin levels in Down syndrome (DS), normal controls, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases. We then analyzed the relationships with age, sex, apolipoprotein E (Apo E) phenotype, and amyloid beta protein 1-40 (Abeta40) and 1-42 (Abeta42) levels. Neopterin levels were higher in DS than all other groups. Levels in young DS (< 40 years of age) and old DS (> 41 years) were similar. There was no significant correlation between neopterin levels and age, sex, Apo E phenotype, and Abeta40 or Abeta42 levels in DS. This lack of correlation betwee

BACKGROUND: Neopterin is released from macrophages upon stimulation with gamma-interferon, secreted by activated T cell. Therefore it has been recognized as a useful indicator of the activation of the T cell-macrophage system. Increased neopterin levels are observed in patients with acute graft rejections, viral infections, auto-immune diseases and several malignancies. Urinary neopterin concentrations were determined in patients with genitourinary tract malignancies to evaluate the usefulness of neopterin as a tumor marker.
METHODS: Urinary neopterin concentrations were determined by high-pe

Neopterin (NPT) a marker of activation of the T-lymphocyte/monocyte axis has been measured in serum of 89 patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (72 patients with Graves' disease and 17 patients with autoimmune thyroiditis) and compared to a group of 24 normal controls and 24 patients with nontoxic goitre. There was a significant correlation between NPT levels and age in the patients with nontoxic goitre (r = 0.447, p < 0.001) but not in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease. Significantly higher NPT levels were found in all patients with Graves' disease (GD) compared to age and sex match

The relationship between serum neopterin levels and coronary heart disease (CHD) was investigated. Eighty-six CHD patients were divided into an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) group (N = 21), an unstable angina pectoris (UAP) group (N = 35), and a stable angina pectoris (SAP) group (N = 30), based on coronary angiography (CAG), 30 subjects without CHD served as the control group. Serum neopterin levels were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and relationships between neopterin and the severity of stenosis, stenosis number, and the stability of coronary artery were analy

Neopterin is synthesized in macrophage/Kupffer cells by interferon-gamma and other cytokines. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of using neopterin as a biomarker of acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver injury. Wistar rats, randomly divided into two groups (APAP and normal), received APAP (1.0 g/kg) and distilled water, respectively, by gastric tube. The APAP group had a higher degree of liver necrosis than the control group. The APAP group also had significantly higher serum neopterin levels than the normal group. Serum neopterin levels correlated with serum AST, ALT activities, and degre

Serum neopterin levels were determined in 31 children and 18 adults with the selective IgA deficiency and in 17 adult patients with a common variable immunodeficiency. The results were compared with serum neopterin levels of 41 children and 26 adult controls. All sera were obtained in an infection-free period. We observed significantly increased serum neopterin levels in common variable immunodeficiency patients; this increase was observed namely in patients with a severe course of the disease. No increase in serum neopterin levels was observed neither in IgA deficient patients prone to respir

To study the disease process in the brain in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), sequential changes in ferritin, creatine kinase (CK), and neopterin in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of two patients with SSPE were compared with the changes in the clinical signs and symptoms and the findings by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). On the basis of changes in various substances in the CSF, especially ferritin, CK and neopterin, we concluded that the high-intensity area in MRI might be evidence of local inflammation and the resulting cell damage. Ferritin, CK and neopterin seemed to be biochem

We report an improved "high-performance" liquid-chromatographic (HPLC) method for measuring biopterin and neopterin in serum and urine. Specimens are acidified, treated with iodine in 0.2 mol/L trichloroacetic acid, party purified on Bio-Rad MP-50 cation-exchange columns, and analyzed by reversed-phase HPLC with fluorometric detection. The minimal concentration of biopterin detectable is 0.3 micrograms/L in a 50-microL injection. The total CV is less than or equal to 10%. Improvements over other reported methods include the use of a single, simplified sample-preparation step with a Baker-10 SP

A systematic study of urinary Neopterin was carried out, gathering two thousand five hundred measurements, on a hospital population of patients supposedly affected by tumors and the concentrations obtained were compared to the usual values determined at the same time on patients apparently free from any disease. Malignant tumors appear to be associated with high concentration of urinary Neopterin and this increase seems well correlated with the severity of the disease. Benign tumors correspond, on the contrary, to an appreciably normal excretion of Neopterin. A clinic study of Neopterin elimin

OBJECTIVES: Biomarker research is an important area of investigation in Gaucher disease, caused by an inherited deficiency of a lysosomal enzyme, glucocerebrosidase. We evaluated the usefulness of neopterin, as a novel biomarker reflecting chronic inflammation and immune system activation in Gaucher disease and analysed its evolution in response to enzyme replacement therapy (ERT).
METHODS: Circulating plasma neopterin levels in 31 patients with non-neuronopathic Gaucher disease were measured before and after the onset of ERT and were compared with those of 18 healthy controls. Plasma chitotr

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to determine neopterin levels in patients with acute coronary syndrome, in which the release of various cytokines activates the cellular immune system. There is an increase in the number and activity of T-cells in unstable atherosclerotic plaques, and of type 1 helper T-cells that produce interferon γ, which in turn produces neopterin, a byproduct of the guanosine triphosphate-biopterin pathway and a marker for activated macrophages.
METHODS: We studied 600 subjects consisting of healthy volunteers and patients with noncardiac chest pain, ST-segment elevat
