Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is considered a tumour with favourable clinical behaviour with only few reported cases of metastases. We report an infant who underwent complete resection and later developed pulmonary metastasis. Ten-month-old baby girl initially presented at 3 weeks of age with macroscopic haematuria, hypertension and a lumbar mass. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a tumour arising from the left kidney without local invasion or metastasis. She underwent left nephrectomy. Immunohistochemistry confirmed a cellular type of congenital mesoblastic nephroma. At 10 mont

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a renal stromal neoplasm of infancy. It comprises 3-10% of all pediatric renal tumors. We report a case of CMN in a 30 week old premature female neonate seen at autopsy who was born to a 26-year-old woman by emergency cesarean section on account of polyhydramnios.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare pediatric tumor of the kidney with the highest peak of incidence during the first 3 postnatal months. It has previously been confused with Wilms' tumor (which, on the contrary, is rare during the first six months of age and is still considered a histogenetic congener). CMN almost always has a favourable prognosis. Therefore, CMN needs to be correctly diagnosed and differentiated from other pediatric renal neoplasms. Two morphological subtypes are currently distinguished histologically: the classical or leiomyomatous type and

In a series of 889 Wilms' tumours we found 29 pure mesoblastic nephromas. The age of the patients varied from newborn to 22 months, but only five were older than four months. Two histologic types were recognized--leiomyomatous (9) and cellular (20) with a fibrohistiocytic appearance. The leiomyomatous type was almost invariably in stage I, smaller and present in younger infants. At operation half of the cellular type has ruptured or infiltrated the renal pelvis or perirenal tissue. Two patients died of postoperative complications. All others are alive after four years and free from disease.

BACKGROUND: Tumors are rare in neonatal age. Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a usually benign renal tumor observed at birth, or in the first months of life. It may also be identified prenatally and associated with polyhydramnios leading to preterm delivery. Effective treatment is surgical in most cases, consisting in total nephrectomy. In literature, very few studies report on the neonatal management of such a rare disease, and even less are those describing its uncommon complications.
CASES PRESENTATION: We report on two single-center newborns affected with CMN. The first patient is

BACKGROUND: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare tumour of the kidney with an overall excellent prognosis. Once considered a benign tumour, it is now recognized to carry a risk of recurrence and metastases with subsequent poor outcomes. The potential for genetic aberrations such as ETV6-NTRK3 fusion raises the potential for targeted treatments in certain patients. The optimum mode and frequency of surveillance is unclear. This study aims to assess this institution's experience with CMN and long-term outcomes.
METHODS: A single centre retrospective review was performed of all confir

Congenital renal tumors are rare. In infancy, congenital mesoblastic nephroma is the most commonly reported renal tumor. It is recognized antenatally due to polyhydramnios and presents clinically as a palpable abdominal mass in the neonatal period. Although widely regarded as a benign tumor, radical nephrectomy is routinely adopted as an effective treatment. We report a case involving antenatal recognition of a large fetal renal mass with polyhydramnios at 35 weeks of gestation. At 37 weeks of gestation, the baby was delivered via emergency cesarean section due to fetal distress. After deliver

Recently, various childhood tumors such as leukemia, neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, retinoblastoma, and central nervous system tumors in patients born after assisted conception have been reported. Although involvement of in vitro fertilization in the tumor pathogenesis was not established, the likely effect of assisted reproductive technology has been increasingly considered in these tumors in the last decade. Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is the most common renal tumor of infancy younger than 6 months associated with an overall good prognosis. The cellular variant of congenital mesoblastic

BACKGROUND: Surgery alone is the appropriate first-line treatment for patients with mesoblastic nephroma (MN). Nevertheless, there are reports of local recurrences and metastasis, especially in the cellular subtype. The authors evaluated the outcome of patients with MN who were enrolled in either the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) 93-01/GPOH or the SIOP 2001/GPOH Nephroblastoma Study and Trial.
METHODS: In total, 50 patients with MN were analyzed. Eleven patients were suspected antenatally of having a renal tumor. The median age at diagnosis was 18.5 days. Central patholog

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is a rare tumor of infancy that usually presents as an asymptomatic abdominal mass. A full-term newborn infant with an atypical variant of this neoplasm developed hemorrhagic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation. The stormy course was complicated by persistent fetal circulation and then the inability to withdraw ventilatory support due to the mass effect of the tumor. After the removal of the tumor at 10 days of age, transient conjugated hyperbilirubinemia developed. At 15 months of age, the infant was thriving without evidence of recurrence of the t

The prenatal diagnosis of abdominal mass poses the problem of its origin. Renal tumors are rarer than neuroblastoma but they are most often congenital mesoblastic nephroma. The congenital mesoblastic nephroma has a good forecast in spite of a sonographic impressive aspect. MRI can help to locate tumor but cannot tell difference between the different kinds of renal tumor. Prenatal forecast is especially linked with hydramnios and hydrops fetalis. Histolological study of the tumor is important for the prognosis. Two morphological subtypes are currently distinguished: the classic type with a good

AIM: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is the commonest renal tumour of infancy, with classical, cellular and mixed histological subtypes described. A specific ETV6-NTRK3 fusion-gene product is reported in association with the cellular variant. The aim was to investigate the relationship between the presence of this product and morphological phenotype using paraffin-embedded archival material.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Cases of CMN from a single centre during a 15-year period (1989-1994) were identified, anonymized and blindly classified using morphological criteria. RNA was extracted from fro

BACKGROUND: Polyhydramnios and hypercalcemia are known complications of congenital mesoblastic nephroma. Hypercalcemia has been shown to cause polyuria. Polyuria is believed to be the probable cause for the polyhydramnios, but the exact mechanism remains unknown. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a relationship between hypercalcemia and polyhydramnios.
CASE: A 26-year-old primigravida was diagnosed with congenital mesoblastic nephroma and polyhydramnios at 36 weeks' gestation. Neonatal hypercalcemia was detected immediately after delivery at 40 weeks' gestation. After remov

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is an unusual renal tumor, similar in some respects to Wilms' tumor and reported only in infants. We report a case of CMN in a 2-year-old boy. He was referred to us with a right abdominal mass. Excretory urogram, arteriogram and computed tomogram revealed a large malignant renal tumor on the right side. With a clinical diagnosis of Wilms' tumor of the right kidney, he received radiation and chemotherapy. After radiation and chemotherapy, tumor size was decreased. Right nephrectomy was performed on April 22, 1982. The kidney and tumor weighed 270 g and meas

The most common nonencapsulated solid renal tumor in the neonatal period is congenital mesoblastic nephroma. Mesoblastic nephroma is a solid lesion originating within or extending from the renal parenchyma. These tumors proliferate rapidly, typically within 3-6 months after birth. Mesoblastic nephromas are stratified by classification as either classical (benign) or atypical (malignant); masses composed of both benign and malignant cells are also reported. The hallmark clinical manifestation of mesoblastic nephroma is a palpable abdominal mass, which may be accompanied by hypertension, hyperca

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare benign tumor that occurs during the neonatal period and early infancy. The vast majority of these tumors present as asymptomatic palpable abdominal masses. We describe an unusual presentation of a CMN in a 10-month-old male infant who presented with massive hematuria and the development of hemorrhagic shock. Abdominal ultrasound showed a heterogeneous solid complex mass measuring 4.8 x 3.5 cm arising from the upper pole of the left kidney. The patient was resuscitated using intravenous fluids and blood transfusions because persistent massive bloo

Definitive diagnosis of infantile fibrosarcoma (IFS) and related kinase-altered spindle cell neoplasms (SCN) requires immunohistochemistry (IHC) or molecular assays that are variable in performance or not widely available. Recent transcriptomic studies identified differential gene expression in IFS with ETV6::NTRK3 fusions, prompting investigation of SOX11 expression pattern by IHC in IFS/IFS-like SCN and morphologic mimics. SOX11 staining (MRQ-58) was performed on 201 spindle cell tumors, including 28 IFS and congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) with ETV6::NTRK3 fusion, 44 IFS/IFS-like SCN w
