Schwannoma is an intraoral rare, benign neoplasm derived from the nerve sheath of peripheral nerves. "Ancient schwannoma" shows histopathological features, such as degenerative changes and atypical nuclei, and may easily be confused with malignant neoplasms. Ancient schwannoma of the head and neck region is relatively uncommon and very few cases had been reported in the oral cavity. We present a case of ancient schwannoma arising from the mental nerve in a 19 year old male which was of eight months duration. Examination revealed a 30 x 25 mm firm, strawberry-like mass in the periapical region

Thirty-two cases of neurofibromatosis Type I (NF1) were identified among 6,678 pediatric cancer patients treated at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital over a 29-year period. A total of 35 malignant neoplasms have been diagnosed in these patients. Two of three patients with second malignant neoplasms had colon cancer at the primary or second tumor. Of particular interest are two cases in which both NF1 and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors were present in multiple successive generations: a patient with colon cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma who has a constitutional abnormality of the p

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Perineuriomas are benign soft tissue neoplasms arising from the peripheral nerve sheath. They account for 1% of all peripheral nerve sheath tumors. To our knowledge, few reported cases of isolated orbital perineurioma are found in the English-written literature, including three cases of hybrid perineurioma/schwannoma or neurofibroma and one case of atypical perineurioma involving the bulbar conjunctiva.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We are reporting a case of orbital perineurioma presenting with right eye proptosis in a 45-year-old male with no other relevant systemic ass

Peripheral nerve sheath tumors are common soft tissue neoplasms and their characterization is often challenging. Although the surgical pathology defines some typical entities, some degree of controversy regarding the classification of these tumors still exists. Newer imagistic and histopathological techniques are crucial for their accurate diagnosis and grading. We present an unusual case of median nerve schwannoma in a young patient, discussing the clinical, surgical and pathological elements, including immunohistochemistry.

Peripheral nerve sheath tumors encompass a spectrum of well-defined clinicopathologic entities, ranging from benign tumors, such as neurofibromas, to high grade malignant neoplasms termed malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Morphologic variability of these tumors is wide, and they engender some of the most controversial, difficult differential diagnoses. Localized neurofibromas often involve a major nerve and result typically in fusiform expansion of the nerve trunk (intraneural subtype). We report a case of circumscribed solitary neurofibromas in a 14-year-old boy with NF1 who presented

Desmoplastic melanoma (DM) and cutaneous malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) reveal histological and immunohistochemical similarities, including S100 positivity and negative staining for conventional melanocytic markers. We present 3 cases of cutaneous S100-positive spindle cell tumors in elderly patients, in which first findings led to initial misdiagnoses as cutaneous MPNST and benign peripheral sheath nerve tumor (neurofibroma). The identification of adjacent atypical melanocytic hyperplasia in the overlying skin along with tumor cell proliferation, also in the superficial derm

BACKGROUND: Orbital and periorbital presentation is rare for malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. These tumors are poorly defined spindle cell neoplasms of peripheral nerves and have not been reported to develop in the lacrimal gland to date.
AIM: To report a rare presentation of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor in the orbital cavity.
CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old man was admitted with the chief complaint of prominent right eye. His symptoms began 16 months prior to his admission. He had obvious limited ocular motion in upgaze and lateral gaze directions, as well as diplopia in all

Neurofibromatosis (NF) type I is a neuroectodermal and mesodermal dysplasia caused by a mutation of the neurofibromin tumor suppressor gene. Phenotypic features of NF1 vary, and patients develop benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors and malignant neoplasms, such as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, malignant melanoma, and astrocytoma. Multiparametric whole-body MR imaging (WBMRI) plays a critical role in disease surveillance. Multiparametric MRI, typically used in prostate imaging, is a general term for a technique that includes multiple sequences, i.e. anatomic, diffusion, and Dixon-ba

Consensus recommendations published in 2017 histologically defining atypical neurofibromatous neoplasm of uncertain biologic potential (ANNUBP) and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) were codified in the 2021 WHO Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System and the 2022 WHO Classification of Tumors of Soft Tissue and Bone. However, given the shift in diagnostic pathology toward the use of integrated histopathologic and genomic approaches, the incorporation of additional molecular strata in the classification of Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1)-associated peripheral nerve s

Myxomas are a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal tumors. Soft tissue myxomas are divided into myocardial, intramuscular, juxta-articular, superficial, aggressive, and nerve sheath myxomas. Although benign, myxomas have site-specific biologic behavior and syndromic associations, which can influence prognosis and management. In addition, myxomas need to be distinguished from malignant neoplasms, such as myxofibrosarcomas, low-grade fibromyxoid sarcomas, myxoid liposarcomas, and peripheral nerve sheath tumors. While myxomas can occur throughout the body, these tumors arise more commonly in the th

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNSTs) of the trachea are extremely uncommon neoplasms with unknown genetic and clinical profiles. Only individual cases have been reported in the literature to date.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a rare case of a 61-year-old female patient with a primary MPNST of the trachea who complained of irritating cough and progressively increasing breathlessness for 4 weeks. This patient initially underwent intraluminal resection of the mass and was misdiagnosed with clear cell sarcoma. Less than a year later, the mass relapsed, and the obs

Schwannoma is a benign neoplasm of the nerve sheath origin. It arises from the nerve sheath of large peripheral or cranial nerves and occurs at the level of the subcutaneous fat layer or deeper layer. Cutaneous schwannoma occurs more superficially and usually presents as a solitary dermal or subcutaneous nodule. We describe a case of cutaneous schwannoma that presented as an erythematous pedunculated protruding mass on the left flank of a 19-year-old female. It was clinically diagnosed as a granuloma pyogenicum. Shaving biopsy was conducted and histological examination revealed an encapsulated

The diagnosis of malignant schwannoma may be difficult or impossible by light microscopy alone, if the neoplasm is poorly differentiated and if there is no clinical evidence for its arising from a nerve-trunk. Six cases of malignant schwannoma in which electron microscopy confirmed or established the diagnosis are reported. In four cases, the anatomic origin of the neoplasm arising from a large nerve was demonstrated at the time of operation, and in one of these the patient had von Recklinghausen's disease. In three of the four cases, as well as in the fifth case, in which the tumor was associ

Schwannomas are common peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Cavernous hemangiomas are vascular tumors that can affect any organ system. The coexistence of cavernous hemangioma with peripheral nervous system neoplasms is a rare occurrence. So far, 37 cases have been documented, and they have been divided into two categories: conjoined association (neoplasms discovered within the tumor tissue) and discrete association (neoplasms discovered outside the tumor tissue, thus placing neoplasms and tumors in close proximity but in different locations). Schwannomas and neurofibromas are the most prevalent tu

Atypical neurofibromatous neoplasm of uncertain biological potential (ANNUBP), defined as a borderline lesion that is difficult to distinguish whether benign or malignant, is one of the intermediate stages to malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, a peripheral nerve-derived malignant tumor that develops from nerve sheath cells. Because ANNUBP is a new concept, only a few cases have been reported, all in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1).An 88-year-old woman presented with a mass on the left upper arm persisting for one year. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a large tumor spreadi

Cervical sarcomas are rare neoplasms, accounting for <1% of all cervical malignancies and characterized by an aggressive course despite radical excision. We report the clinical and microscopic features of a spindle cell sarcoma arising as a polypoid endocervical mass in a 45-yr-old woman. The neoplasm was characterized by a monotonous, mildly atypical proliferation of spindle cells, displaying a fibrosarcoma-like parallel pattern of highly dense fascicles, growing under the cervical epithelium. Mitotic activity was conspicuous, with up to 40 mitoses per 10 HPF. On immunohistochemistry, tumor c

Superficial/cutaneous malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor is a rare soft tissue neoplasm that shares morphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features with spindle/desmoplastic melanoma. We aimed to identify a methylome signature to distinguish these two entities. We analyzed 15 cases of spindle/desmoplastic melanoma and 15 cases of cutaneous malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor in 23 men and 7 women. DNA from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues was extracted and processed using the Illumina Infinium Methylation EPIC array interrogating 866,562 CpG sites. Using a home-gro

Schwannomas are benign, usually encapsulated, nerve sheath tumours derived from Schwann cells. They commonly arise from the cranial nerves as acoustic schwannomas and are extremely rare in the pelvis and retroperitoneal area (<0.5% of reported cases) unless they are combined with Von Recklinghausen disease (type 1 neurofibromatosis). We report the case of a 23-year-old woman with a mass extending from the umbilical region in the abdomen to the upper two-thirds of the thigh. As this tumour is so rare, and in order to ensure optimal treatment and survival for our patient, a computed tomograph

Schwannomas are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors typically found in the neck, flexor surfaces of the extremities, mediastinum, posterior spinal roots, cerebellopontine angle, and retroperitoneum. Pleural schwannomas are a type of neoplasm that arises from autonomic nerve fiber sheaths in the pleura and rarely originate in the thoracic cavity. These schwannomas tend to be asymptomatic, benign, and slow-growing neoplasms. Although pleural schwannomas commonly occur in males, our report highlights a unique presentation of a pleural schwannoma presenting as musculoskeletal-type chest pain in

In terms of their morphology, clinical associations and behavior, peripheral nerve sheath tumors are among the most varied of human neoplasm. Not surprisingly, such tumors are subject to frequent misdiagnosis. This is particularly true of the spectrum of schwannomas which include: a) conventional schwannoma, a histologically benign tumor which, on occasion, is destructive of surrounding osseous structures, b) the relatively recently described cellular schwannoma, a tumor that histologically simulates malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST), c) plexiform schwannoma which, particularly i
