Increasing energy expenditure is an appealing therapeutic target for the prevention and reversal of metabolic conditions such as obesity or type 2 diabetes. However, not enough research has investigated how to exploit pre-existing neural pathways, both in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS), in order to meet these needs. Here, we review several research areas in this field, including centrally acting pathways known to drive the activation of sympathetic nerves that can increase lipolysis and browning in white adipose tissue (WAT) or increase thermogenesis in br

The sexually dimorphic medial preoptic nucleus (POM) in Japanese quail has for many years been the focus of intensive investigations into its role in reproductive behavior. The present study delineates a sequence of descending pathways that finally reach sacral levels of the spinal cord housing motor neurons innervating cloacal muscles involved in reproductive behavior. We first retrogradely labeled the motor neurons innervating the large cloacal sphincter muscle (mSC) that forms part of the foam gland complex (Seiwert and Adkins-Regan [1998] Brain Behav Evol 52:61-80) and then putative premot

Neural tube defects, such as spinabifida, craniorachischisis and anencephaly, are some of the most common birth defects in humans. Recent studies in mouse model systems suggest that craniorachischisis is associated with mutations in genes that regulate cell polarity. Using Xenopus as a model system, Wallingford and Harland have now shed light on the mechanism by which these pathways affect neural tube closure.

OBJECTIVES: This paper will review the central nervous control of the lower urinary tract.
METHODS: Neuroanatomical, electrophysiological and pharmacological techniques have provided information about the neural circuitry and the neurotransmitters involved in the neural control of voiding.
RESULTS: Storage of urine is dependent in part upon spinal reflex mechanisms that activate sympathetic and somatic pathways to the urethral outlet as well as tonic inhibitory systems in the brain that suppress the parasympathetic outflow to the urinary bladder. Voiding is mediated by inhibition of sympathe

BACKGROUND: The aim of our work was to evaluate neural conduction in visual pathways in subjects with ocular hypertension and glaucoma.
METHODS: We assessed simultaneous recordings of pattern electroretinograms (PERG) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) in 16 subjects with ocular hypertension (OHT), in 16 subjects with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and in 15 age-matched controls. The visual stimuli were checkerboard patterns (the check edges subtend 15 min of visual arc; contrast 70%) reversed at the rate of 2 reversals/s.
RESULTS: In OHT and POAG patients we found PERG and VEP latencies

The neural cell adhesion molecule L1 plays a key role in nervous system development including neuronal migration, neurite growth, and axonal fasciculation. L1 is expressed on most developing axons, and homophilic binding of L1 molecules on adjacent axons is likely to play a key role in axon extension. It is now well documented that a number of second-messenger systems are involved in L1-stimulated neurite growth in vitro. However, it is unclear how L1 homophilic or heterophilic binding trigger signals that regulate the mechanical forces that produce axon extension. In this report, we will revi

The objective of this study was to determine whether L-glutamate (L-Glu) may serve as a neurotransmitter candidate in the guinea pig myenteric plexus. We observed that [3H]Glu and gamma-[3H]aminobutyric acid were synthesized from [3H]glutamine and released from neurons of the myenteric plexus during K+ and 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenylpiperazinium-evoked depolarization in a concentration-dependent manner. Muscle tension studies performed on ileal longitudinal muscle-myenteric plexus (LM-MP) preparations revealed that L-Glu [mean effective dose (ED50) 2.5 x 10(-5) M] produced concentration-dependent co

The central nervous system (CNS) has long been considered a relatively immune-privileged site. However, accumulating evidence indicates that CNS border structures, including the meninges, choroid plexus, blood-brain barrier (BBB), and perivascular spaces, are not merely passive barriers but dynamic immune interfaces that enable regulated communication between the peripheral immune system and the brain microenvironment. This review discusses how adaptive immune signals are filtered, integrated, and translated at CNS borders during critical developmental windows, and how these signals subsequent

Depression and obesity are amongst the most serious global health challenges. Each of them is associated with high morbidity, chronicity, and socioeconomic burden. Increasing evidence suggests that these conditions are not merely comorbid but share convergent biological pathways (e.g., hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysregulation, chronic inflammation, gut dysbiosis, and mitochondrial dysfunction). All these components contribute together to the development and persistence of depressive symptoms as well as to an increase in adiposity. Within this framework, adipose tissue has emerged as a

The neural and cardiovascular systems are pivotal in regulating human physiological, cognitive and emotional states, constantly interacting through anatomical and functional connections referred to as the brain-heart axis. When this axis is dysfunctional, neurological conditions can lead to cardiovascular disorders and, conversely, cardiovascular dysfunction can substantially affect brain health. However, the mechanisms and fundamental physiological components of the brain-heart axis remain largely unknown. In this Review, we elucidate these components and identify three primary pathways: neur

The intricate neural pathways involved in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affect areas of our brain that control executive functioning, organization, and planning. OCD is a chronic condition that can be debilitating, afflicting millions of people worldwide. The lifetime prevalence of OCD in the US is 2.3%. OCD is predominantly characterized by obsessions consisting of intrusive and unwanted thoughts, often with impulses that are strongly associated with anxiety. Compulsions with OCD encompass repetitive behaviors or mental acts to satisfy their afflicted obsessions or impulses. While these

OBJECTIVE: To visualize and validate the dynamics of interhemispheric neural propagations induced by single-pulse electrical stimulation (SPES).
METHODS: This methodological study included three patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy who underwent measurement of cortico-cortical spectral responses (CCSRs) during bilateral stereo-electroencephalography recording. We delivered SPES to 83 electrode pairs and analyzed CCSRs recorded at 268 nonepileptic electrode sites. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) tractography localized the interhemispheric white matter pathways as streamlines directly c

Although the immune and nervous systems have long been considered independent biological systems, they turn out to mingle and interact extensively. The present review summarizes recent insights into the neural pathways activated by and involved in infection-induced inflammation and discusses potential clinical applications. The simplest activation concerns a reflex action within C-fibers leading to neurogenic inflammation. Low concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines or bacterial fragments may also act on these afferent nerve fibers to signal the central nervous system and bring about earl

BACKGROUND: In this work, a detailed anatomical description of the ovarian plexus nerve (OPN) in rats is presented. The distribution of the OPN was analyzed by gross anatomy; the features of the superior mesenteric ganglion (SMG) were determined by histological studies; and the localization of the postganglionic neurons innervating the ovary were identified with retrograde tracer. We studied 19 adult cyclic rats of the CIIZ-V strain.
RESULTS: We found that the right OPN originates from the celiac ganglion, the lumbar ganglion of the sympathetic trunk (LGST) and the SMG. The left OPN originate

The neural basis of face processing has been extensively studied in the past two decades. The current dominant neural model proposed by Haxby et al. (2000); Gobbini and Haxby (2007) suggests a division of labor between the fusiform face area (FFA), which processes invariant facial aspects, such as identity, and the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS), which processes changeable facial aspects, such as expression. An extension to this model for the processing of dynamic faces proposed by O'Toole et al. (2002) highlights the role of the pSTS in the processing of identity from dynamic famil

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A role of neural networks in the development of poststroke dementia has not been clearly established. We hypothesized that stroke-mediated disruption of subcortical cholinergic pathway or large-scale neural networks contributes to poststroke dementia.
METHODS: A matched case-control study was conducted in a predetermined cohort with acute ischemic stroke. Cases were defined as newly developed dementia diagnosed >3 months after stroke using the Korean Vascular Cognitive Impairment Harmonization Standards. Each case was matched to 2 controls for age, education, and initi

Neural crest cells appear early during embryogenesis and give rise to many structures in the mature adult. In particular, a specific population of neural crest cells migrates to and populates developing cranial tissues. The ensuing differentiation of these cells via individual complex and often intersecting signaling pathways is indispensible to growth and development of the craniofacial complex. Much research has been devoted to this area of development with particular emphasis on cell signaling events required for physiologic development. Understanding such mechanisms will allow researchers
