A Revised Computational Neuroanatomy for Motor Control.

We discuss a new framework for understanding the structure of motor control. Our approach integrates existing models of motor control with the reality of hierarchical cortical processing and the parallel segregated loops that characterize cortical-subcortical connections. We also incorporate the recent claim that cortex functions via predictive representation and optimal information utilization. Our framework assumes that each cortical area engaged in motor control generates a predictive model of a different aspect of motor behavior. In maintaining these predictive models, each area interacts

Neuroanatomy of developmental dyslexia: Pitfalls and promise.

Investigations into the neuroanatomical bases of developmental dyslexia have now spanned more than 40 years, starting with the post-mortem examination of a few individual brains in the 60s and 70s, and exploding in the 90s with the widespread use of MRI. The time is now ripe to reappraise the considerable amount of data gathered with MRI using different types of sequences (T1, diffusion, spectroscopy) and analysed using different methods (manual, voxel-based or surface-based morphometry, fractional anisotropy and tractography, multivariate analyses…). While selective reviews of mostly small-sc

Functional Neuroanatomy for Posture and Gait Control.

Here we argue functional neuroanatomy for posture-gait control. Multi-sensory information such as somatosensory, visual and vestibular sensation act on various areas of the brain so that adaptable posture-gait control can be achieved. Automatic process of gait, which is steady-state stepping movements associating with postural reflexes including headeye coordination accompanied by appropriate alignment of body segments and optimal level of postural muscle tone, is mediated by the descending pathways from the brainstem to the spinal cord. Particularly, reticulospinal pathways arising from the l

Functional neuroanatomy of the central noradrenergic system.

The central noradrenergic neurone, like the peripheral sympathetic neurone, is characterized by a diffusely arborizing terminal axonal network. The central neurones aggregate in distinct brainstem nuclei, of which the locus coeruleus (LC) is the most prominent. LC neurones project widely to most areas of the neuraxis, where they mediate dual effects: neuronal excitation by α₁-adrenoceptors and inhibition by α₂-adrenoceptors. The LC plays an important role in physiological regulatory networks. In the sleep/arousal network the LC promotes wakefulness, via excitatory projections to the cerebral c

The chemical neuroanatomy of vagus nerve stimulation.

In this short overview a reappraisal of the anatomical connections of vagal afferents is reported. The manuscript moves from classic neuroanatomy to review details of vagus nerve anatomy which are now becoming more and more relevant for clinical outcomes (i.e. the therapeutic use of vagus nerve stimulation). In drawing such an updated odology of central vagal connections the anatomical basis subserving the neurochemical effects of vagal stimulation are addressed. In detail, apart from the thalamic projection of central vagal afferents, the monoaminergic systems appear to play a pivotal role. S

Neuroanatomy and pathology of sporadic Parkinson's disease.

The proteinopathy sporadic Parkinson's disease (sPD) is the second most frequent degenerative disorder of the human nervous system after Alzheimer's disease. The alpha-synuclein inclusion body pathology (Lewy pathology) associated with sPD is distributed throughout the central, peripheral, and enteric nervous systems. The resulting nonrandom neuronal dysfunction and, in some regions, neuronal loss is reflected in a topographic distribution pattern of the Lewy pathology that, in the brain, can be staged. Except for olfactory structures and spinal cord constituents of the pain system, sensory co

Neurophysiology and neuroanatomy of smooth pursuit in humans.

Smooth pursuit eye movements enable us to focus our eyes on moving objects by utilizing well-established mechanisms of visual motion processing, sensorimotor transformation and cognition. Novel smooth pursuit tasks and quantitative measurement techniques can help unravel the different smooth pursuit components and complex neural systems involved in its control. The maintenance of smooth pursuit is driven by a combination of the prediction of target velocity and visual feedback about performance quality, thus a combination of retinal and extraretinal information that has to be integrated in var

The neuroanatomy and neuroendocrinology of fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), caused by a single gene mutation on the X chromosome, offers a unique opportunity for investigation of gene-brain-behavior relationships. Recent advances in molecular genetics, human brain imaging, and behavioral studies have started to unravel the complex pathways leading to the cognitive, psychiatric, and physical features that are unique to this syndrome. In this article, we summarize studies focused on the neuroanatomy and neuroendocrinology of FXS. A review of structural imaging studies of individuals with the full mutation shows that several brain regions are en

A functional neuroanatomy of tics in Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Tics are involuntary, brief, stereotyped motor and vocal behaviors often associated with irresistible urges. They are a defining symptom of the classic neuropsychiatric disorder, Tourette syndrome (TS), and constitute an example of disordered human volition. The neural correlates of tics are not well understood and have not been imaged selectively. METHODS: Event-related [(15)O]H(2)O positron emission tomography techniques combined with time-synchronized audio and videotaping were used to determine the duration of, frequency of, and radiotracer input during tics in each of 72 scan

Neuroanatomy of the cavernous sinus and clinical correlations.

The cavernous sinus has been described for over three centuries. Controversy still exists over the exact nature of the region and its neuroanatomy. Current points of controversy include the dural wall relations, the nature of the venous system, and the nervous system pathways. The clinical implications of current anatomical thinking are discussed.

Structural neuroanatomy of human facial behaviors.

The human face plays a central role in emotions and social communication. The emotional and somatic motor networks generate facial behaviors, but whether facial behaviors have representations in the structural anatomy of the human brain is unknown. We coded 16 facial behaviors in 55 healthy older adults who viewed five videos that elicited emotions and examined whether individual differences in facial behavior were related to regional variation in gray matter volume. Voxel-based morphometry analyses revealed that greater emotional facial behavior during the disgust trial (i.e. greater brow fur

Functional neuroanatomy of intuitive physical inference.

To engage with the world-to understand the scene in front of us, plan actions, and predict what will happen next-we must have an intuitive grasp of the world's physical structure and dynamics. How do the objects in front of us rest on and support each other, how much force would be required to move them, and how will they behave when they fall, roll, or collide? Despite the centrality of physical inferences in daily life, little is known about the brain mechanisms recruited to interpret the physical structure of a scene and predict how physical events will unfold. Here, in a series of fMRI exp

Endoscopic neuroanatomy through the sphenoid sinus.

OBJECT: The aim of the study was to perform endoscopic anatomical studies of skull base structures through the sphenoid sinus in order to better understand endoscopic approaches to skull base lesions. METHODS: Anatomical studies were performed on six cadavers using sinus endoscopes. The sphenoid sinus was entered via a sublabial nasoseptal approach. Stepwise removal of bone surrounding the sphenoid sinus was done to expose the suprasellar area, the retrosphenoid area and the cavernous sinus. The suprasellar dissection exposed the anterior communicating artery (ACom) complex, optic apparatus,

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772): pioneer of neuroanatomy.

Emanuel Swedenborg is widely accredited for his religious fervor and devout dedication to his spirituality. He spearheaded the creation of what is known today as the New Jerusalem Church. However, Swedenborg also served as a prominent figure in the European Enlightenment, making noteworthy strides in the fields of mathematics and science. His acumen for science instilled in the medical world groundbreaking ideas that would forever innovate the practice of medicine. Not only did Swedenborg describe intricacies of the cerebral cortex but he also discovered the perivascular spaces, the foramen of

A Multiscale Methodology for Mapping Human Neuroanatomy.

This chapter describes how to use Mode-based Morphometry (MBM) as a new approach to map anatomical variations in the human brain at multiple spatial scales. This approach overcomes the limitations of conventional approaches, such as surface-based morphometry or voxel-based morphometry, which only consider localized and independent effects at specific brain locations. In contrast, MBM analyzes anatomical group differences of a brain structure as a linear combination of its geometric eigenmodes, which represent intrinsic resonant patterns spanning multiple spatial frequencies that are determined

Using art to understand the neuroanatomy of the cerebellum.

A hand drawn atlas of the embryonic chick cerebellum, created by a fourth-year post-secondary science student as part of her independent research project, served the dual goal of providing an accurate and accessible map of the anatomical structure of the chick cerebellum for learning embryonic neural development, while also highlighting the benefits of art and drawing as a means to aid understanding and appreciating complex, three-dimensional neuroanatomical structures. The cerebellum is a region of the brain that is convoluted and intricately folded and it can be challenging to connect two-di

Neuroanatomy of autism: what is the role of the cerebellum?

Autism (or autism spectrum disorder) was initially defined as a psychiatric disorder, with the likely cause maternal behavior (the very destructive "refrigerator mother" theory). It took several decades for research into brain mechanisms to become established. Both neuropathological and imaging studies found differences in the cerebellum in autism spectrum disorder, the most widely documented being a decreased density of Purkinje cells in the cerebellar cortex. The popular interpretation of these results is that cerebellar neuropathology is a critical cause of autism spectrum disorder. We chal

Recent advances in neuroanatomy: the myotome update.

The myotome of a muscle is the basis for diagnosing spinal and peripheral nerve disorders. Despite its critical importance in clinical neurology, myotome charts presented in many textbooks, surprisingly, show non-negligible discordances with each other. Many authors do not even clearly state the bases of their charts. Studies that have presented with raw data regarding myotome identification are rather rare. A classic study in the 19th century that pursued the nerve course in cadavers still has a substantial influence on existing charts, despite its definite limitations. Other scarce studies i

Baron Larrey at the Dawn of Correlative Neuroanatomy.

In 1820, a young soldier was accidentally injured by a splinter of a fencing sword that penetrated through the right orbit into the brain. Examination by the French military surgeon Baron D.-J. Larrey revealed nominal aphasia, right hemiplegia, and monocular temporal hemianopia with an altitudinal component in the right eye only. In this paper, we aimed to reconstruct Larrey's contribution to neurology in the eve of correlative neuroanatomy. Larrey predicted that the blade passed from the roof of the right orbit to graze the root of the right optic nerve at the chiasm and from there, into the
