The Kölliker-Fuse nucleus (KF) is a functionally distinct component of the parabrachial complex, located in the dorsolateral pons of mammals. The KF has a major role in respiration and upper airway control. A comprehensive understanding of the KF and its contributions to respiratory function and dysfunction requires an appreciation for its neurochemical characteristics. The goal of this review is to summarize the diverse neurochemical composition of the KF, focusing on the neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, and neuropeptides present. We also include a description of the receptors expressed on

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is recognized as one of the most common forms of neurodegenerative dementia. Neuroimaging contributes to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of DLB by examining alterations in brain metabolism, neurochemisty, and morphology in living patients. Neuroimaging can provide objective and quantifiable antemortem markers for the presence of and the progression of DLB and permits differentiation from other dementias. This article reviews current neuroimaging findings in DLB with particular attention to occipital hypometabolism, dopaminergic and cholinergic defi

To review the interaction between melatonin and the dopaminergic system in the hypothalamus and striatum and its potential clinical use in dopamine-related disorders in the central nervous system. Medline-based search on melatonin-dopamine interactions in mammals. Melatonin. the hormone produced by the pineal gland at night. influences circadian and seasonal rhythms, most notably the sleep-wake cycle and seasonal reproduction. The neurochemical basis of these activities is not understood yet. Inhibition of dopamine release by melatonin has been demonstrated in specific areas of the mammalian c

Toxoplasma gondii infection has been associated with psychoneurological disease in humans and behavioural changes in rodents. However, the mechanisms accounting for this have not been fully described and in some cases could be argued to reflect the severe neuropathology that some mice suffer during infection. Herein we employ a multi-omics approach to extensively examine BALB/c mice that are resistant to toxoplasmic encephalitis. Using a combination of LCMS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) and RNAseq we demonstrate that infection alters the neurochemistry and the transcriptome of the

Preterm infants are exposed to many stressors while in the neonatal intensive care unit including pain and reduced maternal care. Both stressors can have a profound negative impact on brain development, and the present study sought to investigate some of the biological mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. Rat pups underwent a series of repetitive needle pokes and/or reduced maternal care through a novel tea-ball infuser encapsulation model during the first four days of life. On postnatal day four, pups were sacrificed and serum was analyzed for corticosterone, while brains were tested for va

BACKGROUND: Monoaminergic systems, as some other neuromodulators, exert modulatory influences across the entire central nervous system (CNS), participating in basic neurobiological processes, behavioural traits, neuropsychiatric diseases, and responses to psychotropic drugs. Their activity is supposedly balanced across the CNS i.e. a change of input in one region could alter their activities at distal regions. Unfortunately, there are a few attempts to determine the neurochemical relationships between local or distal regions.
NEW METHOD: In this review article, we present the technical requir

BACKGROUND: Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a condition in which people with vision loss experience complex visual hallucinations. These complex visual hallucinations may be caused by increased excitability in the visual cortex that are present in some people with vision loss but not others.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the association between γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the visual cortex and CBS. We also tested the relationship among visually evoked responses, functional connectivity, and CBS.
DESIGN: This is a prospective, case-controlled, cross-sectional observational study.

Brain iron homeostasis is increasingly recognized as a potential target for the development of drug therapies for aging-related disorders. Dysregulation of iron metabolism associated with cellular damage and oxidative stress is reported as a common event in several neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases. Indeed, many proteins initially characterized in those diseases such as amyloid-β protein, α-synuclein, and huntingtin have been linked to iron neurochemistry. Iron plays a crucial role in maintaining normal physiological functions in the brain

UNLABELLED: It is not known why tinnitus occurs in some cases of hearing damage but not others. Abnormalities of excitation-inhibition balance could influence whether tinnitus develops and its severity if it does. Animal models of hearing damage, which also produce tinnitus based on behavioral evidence, have identified abnormalities of GABAergic inhibition, both cortically and subcortically. However, the precise relationships of GABA inhibitory changes to tinnitus itself, as opposed to other consequences of hearing damage, remain uncertain. Here, we used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to non-

AIMS: The biological mechanisms of epilepsy allow pathophysiological patterns to be established which are essential for the selection of new therapeutic targets. The identification of these mechanisms also provides us with knowledge about the dynamics of neuronal arrangement, synaptogenesis, synaptic transmission and the receptors involved, and even the development of the brain.
DEVELOPMENT: Recent advances in neurobiology regarding the GABAergic system point to it as playing a leading role in the pathophysiology of epilepsy. We evaluate the different functional formats of the ionotropic (GAB

structural abnormalities of the cerebral cortex in schizophrenia have been revealed by magnetic resonance imaging, although it is not clear whether these abnormalities are diffuse or local. We predicted that changes in cortical structure would result in abnormalities in biochemical markers for the glutamate system in post-mortem brain, and that the pattern of neurochemical abnormalities would be a clue to the distribution and extent of pathology. A number of studies have now reported increases in biochemical and other markers of glutamatergic cell bodies and terminals in the frontal cortex in

While visceral pain is commonly associated with disorders of the gut-brain axis, underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons innervate visceral structures and undergo hypersensitization in inflammatory models. The characterization of peripheral DRG neuron terminals is an active area of research, but recent work suggests that they communicate with enteroendocrine cells (EECs) in the gut. EECs sense stimuli in the intestinal lumen and communicate information to the brain through hormonal and electrical signaling. In that context, EECs are a target for devel

MRI of a female patient with xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XP-A) showed progressive cerebral atrophy, but no disease-specific lesion. MR spectroscopy with short TE sequences in the bilateral white matter revealed decreased N-acetyl aspartate (neuro-axonal marker) and increased myo-inositol (astroglial marker) with a normal concentration of choline (membrane marker), which are compatible with the neuropathology of XP-A, consisting of a reduced number of neurons, and fibrillary astrogliosis with preservation of myelinated fibers. MR spectroscopy reveals neurochemical derangement in XP-A, which

Despite more than 2 decades of neuroimaging investigations, there is currently insufficient evidence to fully understand the neurobiological substrate of auditory hallucinations (AH). However, some progress has been made with imaging studies in patients with AH consistently reporting altered structure and function in speech and language, sensory, and nonsensory regions. This report provides an update of neuroimaging studies of AH with a particular emphasis on more recent anatomical, physiological, and neurochemical imaging studies. Specifically, we provide (1) a review of findings in schizophr
