Primary primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are rare and high-grade malignant tumors that mostly occur in children and young adults. The most common sites are the trunk, limbs, and retroperitoneum. Herein, we present a case of a PNET involving the cervix uteri in a 27-year-old woman. The lesion showed characteristic histologic features of a PNET and was positive for the immunohistochemical markers cluster of differentiation (CD) 99, vimentin, neuron-specific enolase, neural cell adhesion molecule 1 (CD56), and CD117 (c-kit), further defining the tumor while helping to confirm PNET. Occurrence of embryonal kidney tumors in patients with primitive neuroectodermal tumors, so-called central nervous system-renal neoplasia has been reported. An infant who presented with masses in the right lateral ventricle and the cerebellar vermis is reported. Histological examination showed primitive neuroectodermal tumors. Further investigation revealed tumors in the bilateral kidneys, which were removed subtotally and pathologically shown to be Wilms' tumors. The patient was then treated with anticancer drugs and irradiation. However, he developed lung metastases from the renal tumors and

BACKGROUND: Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are rare malignant neoplasms in the spinal cord that comprise undifferentiated or poorly differentiated neural crest cells. PNETs imaging findings lack specificity, making diagnosis difficult.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 16-year-old male patient presented with progressive weakness and numbness of the lower extremities for 1 month, which occurred after a cold. Significantly elevated protein levels were detected in his cerebrospinal fluid. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple patchy or spindle-shaped hyperintensities on T2-weighted imaging, w

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) are extremely uncommon, malignant neoplasms affecting mostly children and young adults. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data and radiological studies of four such cases. All cases were pathologically proven. Plain films, US, and CT scans were used. The youngest child had a huge pelvic tumor and two adolescents each had a chest wall (Askin) tumor. The fourth patient had a most unusual location of the PNET in the anterior mediastinum. The CT findings are emphasized. We emphasize that the markedly abnormal CT findings are not specific fo

In older patients, prophylaxis of herpesvirus infections mainly involves preventing the recurrence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and complications of herpes zoster in immunocompetent patients, while in immunocompromised patients it is more concerned with the prevention of opportunistic virus reactivation. HSV ocular infection is the most frequent cause of corneal blindness in the US. The effectiveness of aciclovir 400mg twice daily in preventing the recurrence of HSV eye disease in immunocompetent patients has been well demonstrated. The issue of treatment duration for patients with highly rec

BACKGROUND: To the authors' knowledge there are relatively few data concerning supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET). The authors retrospectively reviewed all cases of PNET of the brain treated at the study institution to determine whether there was a difference in presentation, overall survival, and recurrence-free survival with regard to tumor location (supratentorium vs. posterior fossa).
METHODS: Between 1977-1996 33 patients with PNET were diagnosed and treated at 1 radiotherapy center. The median age of the patients was 9 years. The location of the tumor was in the post

Embryonic-type neuroectodermal tumors (ENTs) arising from testicular germ cell tumors (GCTs) are a relatively common type of somatic transformation in GCTs with poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options, particularly when patients develop disease recurrence or metastasis. Knowledge of key events driving this transformation is limited to the paucity of comprehensive genomic data. We performed a retrospective database search in a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments- and College of American Pathologists-certified laboratory for testicular GCT-derived ENTs that had previously undergone

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the CT and MR appearances of primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the thoracopulmonary region (Askin tumor), which typically manifest as large tumors involving the chest wall and pleura. This rare malignant neoplasm, seen predominantly in children and young adults, originates in soft tissues of the chest wall, occasionally in bone, or, rarely, in the periphery of the lung.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study group included two boys and six girls, 7-18 years old, with thoracic primitive neuroectodermal tumors who had had CT and MR studies at pr

Embryonic-type neuroectodermal elements are often intimately mixed with primitive endodermal-type glands, like those of yolk sac tumors, in germ cell neoplasia in situ (GCNIS)-derived germ cell tumors of the testis. Because the primitive glands mimic tubules or rosettes of embryonic-type neuroectodermal elements, these embryonic-type neuroectodermal/glandular complexes may be misinterpreted as pure lesions of embryonic-type neuroectodermal elements, which, if of sufficient size, may lead to a diagnosis of embryonic-type neuroectodermal tumor, despite that the criteria of the World Health Organ

We report four cases of uterine tumors with neuroectodermal differentiation. One tumor had neuroectodermal component only; in the three other tumors, the neuroectodermal component was admixed with another component, namely rhabdomyosarcoma (1 case), and endometrioid adenocarcinoma (2 cases). Histologically, the neuroectodermal component consisted of small to medium sized cells arranged in diffuse sheets. The tumor cells had round nuclei with stippled to coarsely granular chromatin, mostly with non-prominent nucleoli, and scant eosinophilic or amphophilic cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, 4/4 t

One hundred ninety-eight children were entered on POG 8633, "Prolonged Postoperative Chemotherapy and Delayed Radiation for Children <3 years of age with Malignant Brain Tumors" (1986-1990). Thirteen manifested supratentorial nonpineoblastoma primitive neuroectodermal tumors, making this the second most common supratentorial tumor in the study. Symptoms and signs included seizures, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, irritability, headache, focal motor weakness, and increased head circumference. Twelve of 13 had symptoms for less than 1 month before diagnosis. The average tumor size was 5.96 cm (+/- 0

OBJECTIVE: We discuss the clinical aspects, pathology, and molecular genetics of 7 patients with primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) arising in the brainstem that were treated at our institution from 1986 through 1995. Most neuro-oncologists avoid performing biopsies in children with pontine tumors. This article raises the question as to whether biopsies should be performed, because treatment recommendations might differ if a PNET was diagnosed rather than a pontine glioma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed the clinical neuro-oncology database and the files of the Division of Neuropathol

BACKGROUND: Data on clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes, and prognosis of pancreatic primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are limited.
AIM: To analyze the clinical data of 30 patients with pancreatic PNETs to identify their clinical characteristics and factors associated with prognosis.
METHODS: We used the keywords "primary neuroectodermal tumor," "digestive tract," "pancreas," "pancreatic," and "gastrointestinal," individually or in combination, to collect data from a global database for all patients with pancreatic PNET to date. Univariate and Cox regression analyses were per

To address the hypothesis that medulloblastoma or supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (sPNET) can arise through infection by polyomaviruses, we examined genomic DNA isolated from 15 primary medulloblastoma and 5 sPNET biopsy specimens and from 2 medulloblastoma cell lines for the presence of DNA sequences from the polyomaviruses simian virus 40 (SV40), JC virus, and BK virus. These polyomaviruses have oncogenic potential in animals, and their DNA sequences have been detected in other surveys of various solid tumors, including childhood brain tumors. The tumor DNA samples were analyz

Atypical cytogenetic abnormalities were detected in peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PPNET) of the extremity in two children. One had an osseous tumor with a balanced reciprocal translocation, t(5;9)(q22;q32), and had a complete response to therapy. The other had a non-osseous tumor with an interstitial deletion, del(18)(q12.2q21.2), was resistant to combination therapy, and at autopsy had evidence of possible clonal evolution with the karyotype 46,XX der(8)t(8;8)(p11.2;q13), inv(16)(p13.2q12),del(18)(q12.2q21.2). Seven children and young adults initially presented with subacute meningitis and/or increased intracranial pressure. The diagnosis of neoplastic meningitis secondary to a primitive neuroectodermal neoplasm was delayed by the absence of an obvious primary tumor. The neuroradiologic appearance was that of a basimeningeal infiltrative process, complicated by communicating hydrocephalus or "pseudotumor cerebri." Myelography was important in the diagnosis of disseminated meningeal malignancy in four cases. Cerebrospinal fluid cytologic diagnosis was insensitive but ultimately confirmed in five case

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) are a family of poorly differentiated malignant neoplasms of neuroectodermal origin. According to the location of origin, PNETs could be further categorized as central or peripheral. Peripheral PNET (pPNET) is an uncommon type that accounts for 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas and occurs outside the central and sympathetic nervous systems. Ovarian PNET is a very rare tumor with a high mortality rate. We report a case of pPNET originating from the pelvic cavity of a young woman. Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) findings demonstrated the prese
