Multivoxel neurofeedback selectively modulates confidence without changing perceptual performance.

A central controversy in metacognition studies concerns whether subjective confidence directly reflects the reliability of perceptual or cognitive processes, as suggested by normative models based on the assumption that neural computations are generally optimal. This view enjoys popularity in the computational and animal literatures, but it has also been suggested that confidence may depend on a late-stage estimation dissociable from perceptual processes. Yet, at least in humans, experimental tools have lacked the power to resolve these issues convincingly. Here, we overcome this difficulty by

Recent findings on neurofeedback training for auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide recent evidence on real-time neurofeedback (NFB) training for auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) in schizophrenia patients. RECENT FINDINGS: NFB is a promising technique that allows patients to gain control over their AVH by modulating their own speech-related/language-related networks including superior temporal gyrus (STG) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) using fMRI, fNIRS and EEG/MEG. A recent limited number of studies showed that while an EEG-based NFB study failed to regulate auditory-evoked potentials and reduce AVH, downregulation of STG hyperactivity

[Neurofeedback for the treatment of chronic tinnitus : Review and future perspectives].

Neurofeedback is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique employing real-time display of brain activity in terms of electroencephalography (EEG) signals to teach self-regulation of distinct patterns of brain activity or influence brain activity in a targeted manner. The benefit of this approach for control of symptoms in attention deficit disorders, hyperactivity, depression, and migraine has been proven. Studies in recent years have also repeatedly shown this treatment to improve tinnitus symptoms, although it has not become established as routine therapy. The primary focus of this review is t

[The use of individual EEG peculiarities for increase of neurofeedback efficiency].

An aim of the study was to demonstrate efficiency of neurofeedback in using individual frequency ranges of electroencephalogram (EEG). The sessions of theta/beta decreasing and alpha simulating trainings were carried out in 2 outpatients: one of them with attention deficit disorder (a schoolboy) and another one with functional pain contraction (a professional musician). The neurofeedback with standard frequency did not result in any improvement of psychometric and EEG characteristics of both patients. The neurofeedback training with individual frequency of maximal peak and alpha band width imp

The efficacy of neurofeedback for alcohol use disorders - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholism is a serious social, economic and public health problem. Alcoholism can affect the gastrointestinal, neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and it can be fatal, costing the healthcare system huge amounts of money. Despite the availability of cognitive-behavioural and psychosocial therapies, alcoholism has a high recurrence rate and a dismal prognosis, with a wide inter-individual variation. As a result, better or adjuvant therapies that improve or facilitate alcoholism therapy are required. We conducted a systematic review to look into the published studie

Learning curves of theta/beta neurofeedback in children with ADHD.

UNLABELLED: Neurofeedback is widely applied as non-pharmacological intervention aimed at reducing symptoms of ADHD, even though efficacy has not been unequivocally established. Neuronal changes during the neurofeedback intervention that resemble learning can provide crucial evidence for the feasibility and specificity of this intervention. A total of 38 children (aged between 7 and 13 years) with a DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of ADHD, completed on average 29 sessions of theta (4-8 Hz)/beta (13-20 Hz) neurofeedback training. Dependent variables included training-related measures as well as theta and be

The Sensorium: Psychophysiological Evaluation of Responses to a Multimodal Neurofeedback Environment.

The Sensorium is a multimodal neurofeedback environment that reflects a person's physiological state by presenting physiological signals via orchestral sounds from a speaker and multi-coloured lights projected onto a white surface. The software manages acquisition, real-time processing, storage, and sonification of various physiological signals such as the electroencephalogram (EEG) or electrocardiogram (ECG). Each of the 36 participants completed 6 interventional conditions consisting of three different Sensorium-phases with EEG and ECG feedback, a mindfulness meditation, a guided body scan e

Neurofeedback and its possible relevance for the treatment of Tourette syndrome.

Neurofeedback is an increasingly recognized therapeutic option in various neuropsychiatric disorders to treat dysfunctions in cognitive control as well as disorder-specific symptoms. In this review we propose that neurofeedback may also reflect a valuable therapeutic option to treat executive control functions in Gilles-de-la-Tourette syndrome (GTS). Deficits in executive control functions when ADHD symptoms appear in GTS likely reflect pathophysiological processes in cortico-thalamic-striatal circuits and may also underlie the motor symptoms in GTS. Such executive control deficits evident in

[Research on auditory neurofeedback technology and its multi-disciplinary applications].

Auditory neurofeedback (ANF) utilizes sound to map brain activity in real-time, guiding individuals to self-regulate neural states via operant conditioning. Compared to visual neurofeedback, ANF offers distinct advantages in millisecond-level response speed and non-visual dependency, significantly enhancing ecological validity and reducing visual fatigue. This paper reviews the physiological basis, signal processing workflows, and three typical experimental paradigms of ANF: threshold regulation, parameter modulation, and state-dependent triggering. Furthermore, it discusses current applicatio

A Novel Neurofeedback Attentional Enhancement Approach Based on Virtual Reality.

Attention enhancement can not only improve individual's study and work performance, but also help to improve such psychological problems as anxiety and depression. Traditional attention enhancement approaches have high requirements on the external environment, and thus have such limitations as long intervention periods, high costs, poor universality, and insignificant therapeutic effects. Virtual Reality (VR) can provide interactive and immersive environments, which can help to break through these limitations and effectively enhance users' attention. In this paper, we propose a novel neurofeed
