Surgical treatment is being used with increasing frequency for patients with intractable epilepsy. Operative success depends to a large degree on the results of a comprehensive pre-operative patient evaluation the main purpose of which is to delineate the epileptogenic lesion. The pre-operative assessment includes video EEG monitoring, structural and functional (fMRI) neuroimaging and neuropsychological evaluation. The likelihood of the success of surgery is increased when all test results point to a single epileptogenic focus. The unique contribution of neuropsychology, which includes standar

What happens to visual artists with neuropsychological deficits? This review will examine artistic production in individuals with a variety of syndromes including achromatopsia, neglect, visual agnosia, aphasia, epilepsy, migraine, dementia and autism. From this review it appears that artists are not spared visual-motor deficits despite their special graphic abilities. Rather their talents allow them to express visual deficits with particular eloquence. By contrast, the effects of aphasia on art are variable. In addition to deficits, neuropsychological syndromes may be associated with positive

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) may be associated with significant and persistent cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was to describe the profile of cognitive deficits in BD at different phases of the illness and determine whether it is different from that of schizophrenia and unipolar (UP) depression.
METHODS: A systematic review of the computerised literature of neuropsychological studies of BD published between 1980 and 2000.
RESULTS: General intellectual function: this was largely preserved in BD. Impairments when present were limited to acute episodes and to performance scores

INTRODUCTION: The term Forensic Neuropsychology refers to the application of the knowledge of the field of Neuropsychology to the legal matters. The field of Clinical Neuropsychology has experienced a great development, thanks to the investigations and publications that have been made both in the basic and applied fields. Nevertheless, only in the last years, clinical neuropsychologists have participated actively in the courts.
DEVELOPMENT: The testimony as experts of neuropsychologists is more and more common. They inform to the judge on the behavioral, emotional and cognitive sequels follow

Recent developments in the functional and neural bases of several aspects of memory are described including long term cortical memory storage, the transition from immediate to permanent memory mediated by medial temporal structures, working memory, memory retrieval, and implicit memory. These are linked to current data on the nature of anterograde and retrograde amnesia in the degenerative diseases, and also to issues in the clinical diagnosis of memory impairments. Understanding the bases of memory can inform the diagnosis of memory impairments in degenerative diseases, and the patterns of im

To test the hypothesis that post-polio fatigue and its concomitant cognitive deficits are associated with an impairment of attention and not of higher-level cognitive processes, six carefully screened polio survivors were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests. Only subjects reporting severe fatigue, and not those with mild fatigue, demonstrated clinically significant deficits on all tests of attention, concentration, and information processing speed while showing no impairments of cognitive ability or verbal memory. These findings suggest that an impaired ability to maintain atten

It is proposed that depending upon the specific pattern of cognitive abilities, each individual lives in an idiosyncratic "cognitive world." Brain pathology can be associated with some disturbed abilities, and frequently experiential changes (i.e., how the world is understood) are observed. Because these patients often are aware of their intellectual changes, they may represent excellent models to illustrate the diversity of cognitive interpretations an individual can have about the surrounding environmental conditions. Four neuropsychology cases are presented to illustrate this point: (a) pro

Case series methodology involves the systematic assessment of a sample of related patients, with the goal of understanding how and why they differ from one another. This method has become increasingly important in cognitive neuropsychology, which has long been identified with single-subject research. We review case series studies dealing with impaired semantic memory, reading, and language production and draw attention to the affinity of this methodology for testing theories that are expressed as computational models and for addressing questions about neuroanatomy. It is concluded that case se

The past few years have seen important progress and new developments in the field of child neuropsychology. Children can exhibit acquired or learning disorders, but in all cases such deficits take place in a developmental trajectory that requires taking into account cerebral maturation and plasticity processes. Child neuropsychology finds its specificity in the perspective of developmental neuropsychology and has close connections with health and education. This article focuses on two pathologies - childhood epilepsies and developmental dyslexia - that highlight the recent progress in this spe

In France about 1 million children are thought to present learning disabilities for reading that in most cases correspond to developmental dyslexias. These are specific and constitutional deficits that prevent rapid and automatic reading abilities from developing, in spite of a normal intelligence and normal visual and auditory acuity. The most frequent form of dyslexia is called "phonological dyslexia" as it results from a deficit of perception and manipulation of phonemes (i.e. "phonological awareness"). Functional neuro-imaging has great potential for helping understand such functional defi

This study investigated the relationship between brain injury and personality, using the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery and the Clinical Analysis Questionnaire as measurement tools. Psychopathological factors, as opposed to normal personality traits, were highly correlated with measures of brain injury. Depression, in particular, was found to be substantially involved in the sequelae of brain injury for this sample. A trend in the data revealed that suicidal depression and anxious depression were differentially related to deficits on two scales of the LNNB. Patients with evidence of

Semantic dementia is a kind of neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by prominent semantic impairments and anterior temporal lobe atrophy. Since 2010, more studies have devoted to this rare disorder, revealing that it is more complex than we think. Clinical advances include more specific findings of semantic impairments and other higher order cognitive deficits. Neuroimaging techniques can help revealing the different brain networks affected (both structurally and functionally) in this condition. Pathological and genetic studies have also found more complex situations of semantic dementia,

OBJECTIVE: This invited paper provides information about professional neuropsychology issues in Canada and is part of a special issue addressing international perspectives on education, training, and practice in clinical neuropsychology.
METHOD: Information was gathered from literature searches and personal communication with other neuropsychologists in Canada.
RESULTS: Canada has a rich neuropsychological history. Neuropsychologists typically have doctoral-level education including relevant coursework and supervised practical experience. Licensure requirements vary across the 10 provinces a

Neuropsychological studies have shown that there are several prominent differences in the patterns of cognitive deficits that occur in neurodegenerative disorders that have their primary etiology in either cortical or subcortical brain dysfunction. Quantitative and qualitative differences are apparent across many cognitive domains, including memory (in all its aspects), attention, executive functions, language and semantic knowledge, and visuospatial abilities. These distinct patterns of deficits have been broadly characterized as forming cortical and subcortical dementia syndromes. Differenti

Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are a cardinal feature of psychosis. Recent research is reviewed which has attempted to advance our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying this symptom. Phenomenological surveys have confirmed the importance of the content of such hallucinations and their meaning to the voice-hearer. Psychological and neuroimaging studies of inner speech and source monitoring have provided a neuropsychological framework for AVHs as well as some novel therapeutic strategies. There have also been successful attempts to 'capture' neural activity coincident with the experience

Cognitive neuropsychology has been used successfully in the analysis of adult neuropsychological disorders in both verbal and nonverbal domains. When applied to children, it aims to construct models on the basis of functional lesions manifest within developing systems and provides a theoretical framework within which patterns of intact and deficient skills can be charted over time. These patterns constrain possible underlying models. In highlighting potential individual differences in the acquisition of skills and indicating intact skills within subjects, cognitive neuropsychology may also ena
