Neurobiological approaches on brains of children with dyslexia: review.

Learning difficulties commonly comprise a heterogeneous group of disorders manifested by unexpected problems in some children's experiences in the academic performance arena. These problems especially comprise of a variety of disorders, which one of the most well-recognized learning difficulties is reading disability or dyslexia. The aim of this review is to explain the postmortem, structural or functional neuroimaging, and electrophysiological studies of human brains in children. The findings about these neuropathological and neurofunctional characteristics of developmental dyslexia, prospect

Spinal arteriovenous malformations and fistulae: clinical, neuroradiological and neurophysiological findings.

Twenty-six patients with myelographic signs suggestive of a spinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) were examined neurologically and neurophysiologically. By selective spinal angiography it was possible to differentiate between dural arteriovenous fistulae (dAVF 20 patients) and intradural AVMs (iAVM, 6 patients). Initial complaints were nonspecific and variable, mainly consisting of sensory disorders and muscle weakness. Later, patients suffered involvement of both the upper and lower motor neurons. There was a high percentage of lower motor neuron lesions (95%), especially in dAVF patients,

[The role of interventional neuroradiology in treatment of hemorrhagic stroke].

Treatment of hemorrhagic strokes necessitates hospitalization in an accommodated hospital offering the possibility of a multidisciplinary approach. In this setting, over recent years interventional radiology has become increasingly important from the diagnostic as well as the therapeutic standpoint. In the context of subarachnoid hemorrhage by intracranial aneurysm rupture, the NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) and ASA (American Stroke Academy) recommendations suggest that endovascular coiling should be considered as an alternative to surgical clipping (class I, leve

An update on brain imaging in transient ischemic attack.

Neuroimaging is critical in the evaluation of patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) and MRI is the recommended modality to image an ischemic lesion. The presence of a diffusion (DWI) lesion in a patient with transient neurological symptoms confirms the vascular origin of the deficit and is predictive of a high risk of stroke. Refinement of MR studies including high resolution DWI and perfusion imaging using either MRI or CT further improve the detection of ischemic lesions. Rapid etiological work-up includes non-invasive imaging of cervical and intracranial arteries to search for sympt

Bridging neuroanatomy, neuroradiology and neurology: three-dimensional interactive atlas of neurological disorders.

Understanding brain pathology along with the underlying neuroanatomy and the resulting neurological deficits is of vital importance in medical education and clinical practice. To facilitate and expedite this understanding, we created a three-dimensional (3D) interactive atlas of neurological disorders providing the correspondence between a brain lesion and the resulting disorder(s). The atlas contains a 3D highly parcellated atlas of normal neuroanatomy along with a brain pathology database. Normal neuroanatomy is divided into about 2,300 components, including the cerebrum, cerebellum, brainst

Endovascular treatment of spinal arteriovenous lesions: beyond the dural fistula.

During the past few decades, there have been significant advances in the understanding of spinal vascular lesions, mainly because of the evolution of imaging technology and selective spinal angiography techniques. In this article, we discuss the classification, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations of spinal vascular lesions other than DAVFs and provide a review of the endovascular approach to treat these lesions.

[Interventional neuroradiology. Drug treatment, monitoring and function tests].

Specialized monitoring as well as function tests and drug therapy play an ever growing role in neuroradiological procedures. The particular route of administration and the territories involved in neuroradiology require special precautions. Anaesthesia must enable the operators to monitor the central nervous system since the patients must remain totally immobilized for several hours. Catheterization is made safe by careful asepsia and antibiotic prophylaxis and by preventing embolic events, particularly in neuro-cervico-facial interventions where an anticoagulant protocol is important. Arterial

Perioperative management of scheduled interventional neuroradiology procedures: Results of a nationwide French survey.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Interventional neuroradiology (INR) spans a broad range of elective indications, yet perioperative management for scheduled care remains poorly characterized. We conducted a nationwide survey to describe current practices and examine differences by center procedural volume. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire (June-August 2025) was distributed to all accredited French INR centers. Descriptive analyses were performed. Prespecified univariate comparisons were conducted according to the 2024 aneurysm embolization volume (high-volume ≥150 vs. low-volume

[Carotid-cavernous fistula: comparison of clinical and neuroradiologic features pre- and post-embolization].

We report the case of an 85-year-old patient, referred by her ophthalmologist for neuro-ophthalmologic consultation at the Clermont-Ferrand University Medical Center, for conjunctival hyperemia and ocular hypertension in the left eye for 12 months. The patient's only past medical history was treated, controlled arterial hypertension and there was no mention of falling or head trauma. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and angiography identified a type D carotid-cavernous fistula. Intravenous embolization was performed under general anesthesia by retrograde selective catheterization facial vein a

Neuroradiological findings in Alagille syndrome.

Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is a multisystemic disease caused by mutations in genes of Notch pathway, which regulates embryonic cell differentiation and angiogenesis. Clinically, ALGS is characterized by cholestasis, cardiac defects, characteristic facial features, skeletal and ophthalmologic abnormalities. The aim of this review is to illustrate neuroradiological findings in ALGS, which are less well-known and prevalent, including cerebrovascular anomalies (such as aneurysms, dolichoectasia, Moyamoya syndrome and venous peculiarities), Chiari 1 malformation, craniosynostosis, intracranial hypert

Frequent Clinical and Radiological Progression of Optic Pathway/Hypothalamic Pilocytic Astrocytoma in Adolescents and Young Adults.

Most cases of optic hypothalamic pilocytic astrocytoma (OHPA) develop during childhood, so few cases of histologically verified OHPA have been described in adolescents and young adults (AYA). To elucidate the clinical features of OHPA with histological verification in AYA, we reviewed the clinical and radiological finding of OHPA treated at our institute from January 1997 and July 2017. AYA are aged between 15 and 39 years. The clinical courses of 11 AYA patients with optic hypothalamic glioma (OHG) without neurofibromatosis type 1 were retrospectively reviewed. About six patients were diagnos

Interrater variability for CT angiography evaluation between neurologists and neuroradiologist in acute stroke patients.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of arterial occlusion has a considerable impact on the indication of mechanical thrombectomy, and CT angiography (CTA) is recommended in the management of acute stroke. The goal of the present study is to assess the interrater agreement in the diagnosis of occlusion of intracranial arteries on CTA between a neuroradiologist and neurologists. METHODS: CTA images of 75 acute stroke patients were evaluated for occlusion of intracranial arteries by an experienced interventional neuroradiologist, and stroke and general neurologists. RESULTS: 75 patients who were treated b

Central nervous system infections of herpesvirus family.

Herpesviruses are one of the most common groups of pathogens causing central nervous system infections in humans. They mostly cause encephalitis, meningitis, or myelitis in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. Children, adults, and the elderly can all be affected. Although contrast-enhanced CT is more widely used for diagnosis, contrast-enhanced MR imaging combined with diffusion-weighted imaging is superior to CT in the detection of early changes and the real extent of the disease, and in assessing prognosis and monitoring response to antiviral treatment. More sophisticated techniq

Cerebrospinal fluid leak and meningitis associated with nasal continuous positive airway pressure therapy.

Clear rhinorrhea is a common symptom in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and may worsen with continuous positive airway pressure therapy. Clear rhinorrhea can also be the presenting symptom of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, which is evidence of a communication between the subarachnoid space and the nasal cavity or sinuses. While CSF leak has been reported to occur with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) therapy following trauma to the skull base, its association with OSA and nCPAP therapy in the absence of trauma has not been previously described. We report two patie

EVALUATION OF AN ACTIVE PERSONAL DOSIMETRY SYSTEM IN INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY AND NEURORADIOLOGY: PRELIMINARY RESULTS.

Active personal dosimeters (APD) supply real-time data on radiation dose rates and equivalent doses, enabling reduction of operator exposure to radiation in diagnostic and surgical procedures. Data from the use of the Raysafe i2 APD system in an angiography room are reported. Preliminary characterisation of the APD system was first carried out in terms of angular dependence and of Hp(10) response during the simulation of five typical surgical protocols. Reference measurements, simultaneously obtained from TLDs, were used to obtain a correction factor. APD data for patients and for primary and

Dangerous extracranial-intracranial anastomoses and supply to the cranial nerves: vessels the neurointerventionalist needs to know.

Transarterial embolization in the external carotid artery (ECA) territory has a major role in the endovascular management of epistaxis, skull base tumors, and dural arteriovenous fistulas. Knowledge of the potential anastomotic routes, identification of the cranial nerve supply from the ECA, and the proper choice of embolic material are crucial to help the interventionalist avoid neurologic complications during the procedure. Three regions along the skull base constitute potential anastomotic routes between the extracranial and intracranial arteries: the orbital, the petrocavernous, and the up

Update and trends in venous (VDSA) and arterial (ADSA) digital subtraction angiography in neuroradiology.

After presentation of the principles and technology of digital subtraction angiography the results of 649 investigations with the peripheral venous method are presented and first experiences are discussed critically. In conclusion the method of venous digital subtraction angiography can be stated to be useful for adequate diagnosis of the extracranial brain vessels. Diagnostic statements about the intracranial vessels by venous injection are limited, and therefore a combined investigation including normal angiography remains necessary. In the near future neuroradiological investigations cannot
