BACKGROUND: Neurological involvement in schistosomiasis presents a significant and serious complication. While the disease is generally considered treatable during the early stages, the rarity of this condition often leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment. This study aims to report the clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with spinal neuroschistosomiasis (NS) in an endemic area to the disease.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional review was conducted at Althora General Hospital in Ibb, Yemen, from January 2016 to January 2021. The study examined confirmed pediatric cases of

Neuroschistosomiasis is a rare manifestation of Schistosoma infection and can either manifest as cerebritis or with spinal cord involvement. We present a case of low back pain and lower limb weakness, which was initially managed as idiopathic transverse myelitis and later on found to have neuroschistosomiasis. A 23-year-old Sudanese gentleman presented with a one-week history of low back pain, lower limb weakness, and urinary retention. An urgent MRI of the spine with contrast showed features suggestive of transverse myelitis. The patient was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone for fiv

The authors report three rare cases of neuroschistosomiasis lacking extracranial involvement. No parasitic eggs were detected in the stool with the Kato-Katz thick smear methods. Computed tomography of the brains showed hypodense signals, and magnetic resonance imaging showed isointense signals on T1-weighted images, hyperintense signals on T2-weighted images, and intensely enhancing nodules in the brain after intravenous administration of gadolinium. High-grade gliomas were suspected, and operations or radiosurgery was performed. Cerebral schistosomiasis was confirmed in all cases by biopsy o

The involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) by Schistosoma mansoni may or may not cause clinical manifestations. When symptomatic, neuroschistosomiasis mansoni (NSM) is one of the most severe presentations of this infection. The neurological manifestations are due to numerous granulomas grouped in confined areas of the spinal cord or the brain. Considering the symptomatic form, myelopathy is far more frequent than the cerebral disease. Spinal cord NSM presents as a low cord syndrome of acute/subacute progression usually associated with involvement of the cauda esquina roots. Lower limb

BACKGROUND: Spinal neuroschistosomiasis (SN) is one of the most severe clinical presentations of schistosomiasis infection and an ectopic form of the disease caused by any species of Schistosoma. In Brazil, all cases of this clinical manifestation are related to Schistosoma mansoni, the only species present in the country. Although many cases have been reported in various endemic areas in Brazil, this is the first time in the literature that SN is described in two brothers.
CASE PRESENTATION: Two cases of SN were accidentally diagnosed during an epidemiological survey in an urban area endemic

BACKGROUND: Deposition of Schistosoma mansoni eggs in the brain of patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis (HS-SM) is frequent and usually asymptomatic. However, it is questioned whether it could cause seizures. Thus, we investigated the occurrence of seizures in these patients and also searched for parameters associated with this disorder.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey, we compared 128 patients with HS-SM with 102 patients with portal hypertension due to compensated chronic hepatic disease of other etiologies. A standardized questionnaire, emphasizing epilepsy-related parameters,

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to identify the prevalence of urodynamic changes with an associated risk of developing upper urinary tract damage in neuroschistosomiasis patients.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted, wherein68 patients were admitted for analysis of urodynamics, urea and creatinine levels, and uroculture.
RESULTS: Blood test results did not indicate kidney failure. There were cases of asymptomatic bacteriuria. Common symptoms were frequent nocturia and detrusor overactivity. Results of low compliance and low cystometric capacity were both statistically significant (p =

Neuroschistosomiasis is a severe disease caused by the presence of Schistosoma eggs and/or adult worms in the central nervous system. Schistosomal transverse myelitis represents a rare clinical form with nonspecific clinical findings, and it is thus underdiagnosed, especially in children. In this report, we describe a 6-year-old patient with the myeloradicular form of neuroschistosomiasis.

Neuroschistosomiasis (NS) is the second most common form of presentation of infection by the trematode, Schistosoma mansoni. Granulomatous inflammatory reaction occurs as a result of schistosome eggs being transmitted to spinal cord or brain via the vascular system, or by inadvertent adult worm migration to these organs. The two main clinical syndromes are spinal cord neuroschistosomiasis (acute or subacute myelopathy) and localized cerebral or cerebellar neuroschistosomiasis (focal CNS impairment, seizures, increased intracranial pressure). Presumptive diagnosis of NS requires confirming the

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic worms from the genus Schistosoma. Spinal neuroschistosomiasis (SN) is a rare but serious complication that can result in significant morbidity and mortality, with only a few hundred cases documented in the literature.
METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA-ScR) statement, extension for scoping reviews, a systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science using relevant keywords, from inception until November 7th, 2024, was carried out followed by scre

Schistosomiasis mansoni presents many clinical manifestations during migration of schistosomes in their hosts, including diarrhea, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, liver abscesses, skinlesions, brain tumors and myeloradiculopathy. No lesions have been reported in skeletal striated muscles due to schistosomiasis mansoni in the literature. This short communication reports the histopathological findings on skeletal musculature in a murine model of neuroeschistosomiasis mansoni. Lesions were found in the tongue, masseter muscle, buccinator muscle, digastric muscle and temporalis muscle. Worm recovery w

BackgroundSpinal myelitis is an infrequent manifestation of spinal cord infection. It is caused by the Schistosoma species, which are endemic in South America, part of the Middle East, and Africa.Case presentationWe report the case of a 13-year-old male adolescent complaining of progressive lower back pain and weakness of the lower extremities for 3 days. Initial magnetic resonance imaging revealed typical transverse myelitis. Subsequently, parasite serology showed a markedly elevated level of Schistosoma antibody titers, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis yielded normal results. Because of our

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: In the evaluation of acute flaccid paralysis, particularly in pediatric populations within endemic areas for schistosomiasis infection, clinicians must maintain a high index of suspicion for neuroschistosomiasis. Prompt identification is imperative to mitigate the risk of irreversible neurological sequelae.
ABSTRACT: Spinal cord involvement in neuroschistosomiasis (NS) is considerably rare, with even fewer reported cases affecting the conus medullaris in children. While NS's neurological sequelae are typically thought to be reversible, delayed diagnosis and treatment can

OBJECTIVE: To establish an experimental model of neuroschistosomiasis and investigate the model establishment factors.
METHODS: Rabbits were used for the animal model and Schistosoma japonicum eggs (1 mg/ml) were directly injected into the brain by two ways of a bone drill or needle. The symptoms were observed and in the first and second week and later, the rabbits' brains were removed for pathological examinations.
RESULTS: One to two weeks after the injection of schistosome eggs, the rabbits had various neurological symptoms such as loss of appetite, hemiparesis, seizure, etc. The patholog

We describe the case of a 16-year-old German male expatriate from Ghana who presented with obstipation, dysuria, dysaesthesia of the gluteal region and the lower limbs, bilateral plantar hypaesthesia and paraesthesia without pareses. A serum-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Schistosoma spp. specific antibody specificity index of 3.1 was considered highly suggestive of intrathecal synthesis of anti-Schistosoma spp. specific antibodies, although standardization of this procedure has not previously been described. Diagnosis was confirmed by detection of Schistosoma DNA in CSF by semi-quantitative real-t

BACKGROUND: Neuroschistosomiasis is a rare manifestation of Schistosoma infection, typically affecting the spinal cord and supratentorial brain regions. Cerebellar involvement is exceedingly uncommon and often presents with multiple enhancing lesions on imaging, mimicking neoplastic processes. Solitary cerebellar lesions are even more unusual. The authors present the first reported case of solitary cerebellar neuroschistosomiasis confirmed via real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on brain tissue caused by Schistosoma japonicum.
OBSERVATIONS: A 33-year-old man from an endemic region pr

INTRODUCTION: Human neuroschistosomiasis has been reported in the literature, but the possibility of modeling neuroschistosomiasis in mice is controversial.
METHODS: In two research laboratories in Brazil that maintain the Schistosoma mansoni life cycle in rodents, two mice developed signs of brain disease (hemiplegia and spinning), and both were autopsied.
RESULTS: S. mansoni eggs, both with and without granuloma formation, were observed in the brain and meninges of both mice by optical microscopy.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first description of eggs in the brains of symptomatic mice that we

Neuroschistosomiasis is a severe form of presentation of schistosomiasis in which Schistosoma spp. affects the central nervous system. This is the first study performed to analyze whether there is any relationship between physical effort and the appearance of neuroschistosomiasis, through clinical, molecular and immunological evaluations. An experimental controlled study using 64 male Balb/c inbred mice divided into four groups according to presence or absence of S. mansoni infection and submitted to physical effort or resting was conducted. Thirteen weeks after exercise training, S. mansoni D

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma. Currently more than 200 million people worldwide are affected. Neuroschistosomiasis constitutes a severe presentation of the disease. Neurological symptoms result from the inflammatory response of the host to egg deposition in the brain and spinal cord. Neurological complications of cerebral schistosomiasis include delirium, loss of consciousness, seizures, dysphasia, visual field impairment, focal motor deficits and ataxia. Cerebral and cerebellar tumour-like neuroschistosomiasis can present with increased

Aiming to raise awareness for the possibility of schistosomal involvement of the central nervous system in travellers returning from endemic areas and/or immigrants to nonendemic areas, the authors report a case of neuroschistosomiasis in a Portuguese patient coming from the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe with good clinical outcome following praziquantel therapy. This is the first case of neuroschistosomiasis associated with São Tomé and Príncipe reported in literature and further studies are needed to confirm which species of this parasite are endemic of that region. We conclude that early
