Richard L. Sutton described what he termed "periadenitis mucosa necrotica recurrens," now known as major aphthosis or Sutton's ulcer in 1911. He described "leukoderma acquisitum centrifugum" (halo nevus, Sutton's nevus) in 1916. Here, we summarize the 2 publications by Sutton, trace his life story, and comment briefly on these 2 diseases.

BACKGROUND: The time period between onset of depigmentation around the halo nevus (HN) to complete resolution of the nevus and halo has not been well studied.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to better understand the natural history of the HN.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients with a clinical diagnosis of HN selected from a private practice database (1994-2010) was performed. In all, 52 patients with 80 HN were identified. The current stage of the HN was determined by a follow-up questionnaire and physical examination of 36 patients with 56 HN.

Halo dermatitis (Meyerson's nevus) is an inflammatory, sometimes itchy, eczematous eruption usually encircling a preexisting melanocytic nevus that can be mistaken for malignant melanoma or Sutton's nevus. BACKGROUND: Halo nevus (HN) is a rare dermatologic disorder characterized by typical whitish rim surrounding an existing melanocytic nevus resembling halo. It is a cosmetic problem that may be linked to vitiligo, and it is advised to remove these nevi in order to avoid development of vitiligo.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the cosmetic outcome after nevus removal and leukoderma dermabrasion with epithelial graft followed by narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy as management of resistant halo nevi and avoidance of development of vitiligo.

Meyerson's nevus has been described as a melanocytic nevus with an associated eczematous halo reaction. We describe four patients with eczematous halos developing around atypical nevi, a finding not previously reported. Biopsy specimens revealed eosinophilic spongiosis in addition to the previously reported spongiotic dermatitis.

Leukoderma in association with congenital melanocytic nevi is a rare phenomenon; nevertheless several reports have been published in the literature. We present a 15-year-old boy born with a pigmented lesion on the lower and upper eyelid diagnosed as a congenital divided nevus of the eyelid. BACKGROUND: Regression of congenital melanocytic nevi is usually accompanied by the halo phenomenon and is considered a rare event.
OBJECTIVE: A 15-year-old woman presented for the evaluation of multiple halo nevi. She had on her trunk a figure-of-eight pigmentary lesion, which had been developed after the coalescence of two distinct congenital melanocytic nevi. Close to the indentation between the two portions of the lesion, there was an achromic rounded area, extending from the perinevic skin to the nevus, causing its partial regression.

We report three cases of alopecia areata occurring around central, pigmented nevi. The histologic appearance of the central nevus was that of the halo nevus. Removal of the nevus did not appear to alter the natural course of the alopecia. Histochemical studies showed a substantial increase of acid mucopolysaccharides in the dermis in each case.

A giant congenital nevocytic nevus (CNN) on the trunk was followed in a patient from age three months to 23-years-old. During that time the nevus underwent pigmentary regression leaving 2-3 mm lentigines without any evidence of vitiligo or halo formation around the giant CNN. Histopathologically, nevus cells remained in the dermis.

We observed histopathologic changes previously described in dysplastic melanocytic nevi in association with a dermal component characteristic of other types of melanocytic nevi or overlapping with features of other varieties of nevi. An observation of multiple halo nevi is presented with clinico-morphological analysis. A spontaneous regression of halo nevi is shown to be performed with morphological manifestations of the antitumour immune response. This implies their differential diagnosis with typical nevocellular nevus and malignant melanoma. The diagnostic criteria are discussed.
