Sea lice monitoring on Atlantic salmon farms in New Brunswick, Canada: comparing audit and farm staff counts.

Sea lice audits were performed by the Atlantic Veterinary College on commercial aquaculture sites in New Brunswick, Canada, in 2011. Although the primary objective was to verify that farms were reporting similar lice counts to third-party counts, more detailed comparisons were made to identify when lice counts were more likely to differ between the audit team and farm employees. A total of 28 sea lice audits were conducted on 16 sites between June and December 2011. During each audit, 10 cages were evaluated per site where possible, with ten fish per cage being evaluated by an audit technician

Differences in experiences with episodic virtual care based on language of comfort for healthcare services in New Brunswick, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Communication plays a central role in accessing healthcare, but few studies have investigated how language shapes the full continuum of access, from perceptions of the system to experiences of care. We sought to clarify how preferred language for healthcare services differentiates patterns of episodic virtual care (EVC) use and explored differences in experiences with EVC services based on the language of comfort of those who used eVisitNB in New Brunswick (NB), Canada. METHODS: We analyzed NB residents aged 18 years and older who reported using eVisitNB in the past year using an o

Evaluating bath treatment effectiveness in the control of sea lice burdens on Atlantic salmon in New Brunswick, Canada.

The use of medicinal bath treatment for sea lice is becoming more common, due to increasing resistance to in-feed treatments with emamectin benzoate. Common treatment modalities in New Brunswick, Canada, include Salmosan administered by tarpaulin or wellboat, and Paramove administered by wellboat. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of these treatment modalities in the field between 2010 and 2015 using a web-based sea lice data management system (Fish-iTrends© ). Effectiveness was evaluated for adult female (AF) and for pre-adult and adult male (PAAM) life stages separately. We also i

Local Surveillance and Control of Raccoon Rabies Virus in Striped Skunks (Mephitis mephitis) in Southwestern New Brunswick, Canada.

Targeted surveillance for raccoon rabies virus was conducted between February and May 2017, near Waweig, New Brunswick, Canada, in response to detection of a rabid striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) on 8 February 2017. A total of six skunks, 11 raccoons (Procyon lotor), and two porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) were live-trapped, euthanized, and tested for rabies virus antigens using the direct rapid immunohistochemical test. Of these, only two skunks tested positive for rabies. All three rabid skunks came from the same location, an abandoned barn used as a denning site. Four of five skunks remov

Linking eutrophication indicators in eelgrass habitats to nitrogen loading and mitigating site characteristics in eastern New Brunswick, Canada.

Nitrogen loading has been linked to eutrophication and seagrass bed declines worldwide, yet early warning signs and potential mitigating factors are often less clear. Our objective was to use published nitrogen loading model results together with eelgrass habitat surveys from 7 bays in Atlantic Canada to assess linkages between nitrogen loading, tidal flushing and bivalve aquaculture on observed eutrophication indicators in eelgrass habitats. Field surveys revealed significant differences in primary indicators (annual algae, tissue nitrogen) and secondary changes in eelgrass bed structure, yet

Identification of cannabinoids in post-mortem blood samples from the province of New Brunswick before and after recreational cannabis legalization.

INTRODUCTION: Since recreational legalization of cannabis in Canada in 2018, self-reported use in New Brunswick (NB) has increased from 15.1% to 20.3%, the largest increase of any province. Current literature on the impact of recreational cannabis legislation in other jurisdictions is conflicting, though retail availability has often been delayed on enactment. Given the immediate availability of cannabis in NB after legalization, we sought to establish the effect this had on post-mortem cannabinoid detection. Furthermore, we wanted to investigate the impact that age, sex, and manner of death h

Fish and seafood availability in markets in the Baie des Chaleurs region, New Brunswick, Canada: a heavy metal contamination baseline study.

The consumption of halieutic products has many health benefits. However, their contaminants loads need to be addressed to better understand the risk from consuming these products. The aquatic biota from the Baie des Chaleurs in New Brunswick is contaminated by cadmium, zinc and lead. In spite of this, no study has examined the heavy metal concentrations in commercial halieutic products sold in this Canadian region. The objective of this pilot study was to characterize the species and origin of fish and seafood sold in the Baie des Chaleurs region by using an ecosystemic approach. Additionally,

Sea lice population and sex differences in P-glycoprotein expression and emamectin benzoate resistance on salmon farms in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic sea lice are a major challenge for salmon aquaculture. This is especially due to the recent development of resistance to emamectin benzoate (EMB) in the parasite. We investigated: (1) whether EMB treatment success in Grand Manan, Bay of Fundy, NB, Canada can be explained through EMB bioassay and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) mRNA expression studies; (2) if other populations of sea lice not under EMB selective pressure possess similar EMB sensitivity as Grand Manan sea lice populations; and (3) the heritability of EMB resistance in Lepeophtheirus salmonis. RESULTS: EMB bioassay r

Comparing ONRAB® AND RABORAL V-RG® oral rabies vaccine field performance in raccoons and striped skunks, New Brunswick, Canada, and Maine, USA.

Control of rabies in mesocarnivore reservoirs through oral rabies vaccination (ORV) requires an effective vaccine bait. Oral rabies vaccine performance in the field may be affected by a variety of factors, including vaccine bait density and distribution pattern, habitat, target species population density, and the availability of competing foods. A field study in which these covariates were restricted as much as possible was conducted along the international border of the state of Maine (ME), USA, and the province of New Brunswick (NB), Canada, to compare the performance of two oral rabies vacc

"Anybody who Looks at This Program and Doesn't See the Positive Side from it Doesn't Fully Understand": Participant Perspectives on an Injectable Opioid Agonist Treatment Program in New Brunswick, Canada.

Safer supply programs (SSPs) have emerged in Canada in a response to the drug toxicity crisis and to the contaminated illicit drug supply. A form of safer supply, injectable opioid agonist treatment (iOAT) programs, provide individuals with access to regulated opioids that are generally self-administered in supervised settings. The implementation of SSPs has been controversial, and gathering additional data on their impact is necessary to inform their future. An iOAT program in New Brunswick, Canada, was evaluated from the perspectives of individuals accessing the program, to better understand

A protocol for a randomized controlled trial comparing Sleepwell, EMPOWER, and treatment-as-usual for benzodiazepine receptor agonist discontinuation in older adults: the your answers when needing sleep in New Brunswick (YAWNS NB) study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic benzodiazepine receptor agonist (BZRA) use among older adults is a public health concern given cognitive and physical risks. One in four older adults in New Brunswick, Canada, is a long-term user of BZRAs. Previous studies using a direct-to-patient approach as the primary intervention target have shown promise in reducing BZRA use. The Your Answers When Needing Sleep in New Brunswick (YAWNS NB) study aims to reduce the long-term use of BZRAs in older adults and increase the use of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBTi), which is the recommended first line treatme

Adult survival in a small seabird, Hydrobates leucorhous, covaries with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation over the past six decades.

Seabirds' annual survival is influenced by numerous factors, but oceanic conditions are among the most significant. Indices used to monitor these conditions typically cycle over decades. Using the longest capture-mark-recapture (CMR) time series available for the species (1955-2023), we estimated apparent adult survival of Leach's storm-petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous) from Kent Island, New Brunswick. We assessed whether survival covaried with large-scale oceanographic indices reflecting conditions at various periods in the life cycle. We used Cormack-Jolly-Seber CMR models to estimate the annu
