Diving into Diversity: Hasleaberepwari (Bacillariophyceae, Naviculaceae), a new species of marine diatom from New Caledonia.

The current article introduces and describes Hasleaberepwari sp. nov., a new species of diatom discovered in the vicinity of Boulouparis, New Caledonia. Under light microscopy, H.berepwari sp. nov. strongly resembles Hasleapseudostrearia, but preliminary molecular barcoding conducted using partial 18S and rbcL genes suggested that it was a distinct species. This was confirmed first by scanning electron microscopy which showed the differences in stria densities between both species. A short-reads genome-skimming protocol applied on H.berepwari sp. nov. led us to obtain its complete mitochondria

Swift sympatric adaptation of a species of cattle tick to a new deer host in New Caledonia.

The occurrence and frequency of sympatric speciation in natural systems continue to be hotly debated issues in evolutionary biology. This might reflect the timescale over which evolution occurs resulting in there being few compelling observations of the phenomenon (lake fishes, phytophagous insects and Island trees). Despite predictions, few examples of sympatric speciation have been recorded in animal parasites, at least widely accepted as such. Here we show that, in New Caledonia, the monophasic (exploiting one individual host per generation) cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus has evolved i

Philometrids (Nematoda: Philometridae) in carangid and serranid fishes off New Caledonia, including three new species.

A recent examination of newly obtained specimens of philometrid nematodes (Philometridae) parasitising carangid and serranid fishes off New Caledonia, South Pacific, revealed the presence of several nematodes of the genus Philometra Costa, 1845, including three new species: P. austropacifica n. sp. (males and females) from the ovary of Alepes vari (Carangidae), P. piscaria n. sp. (males) from the ovary of Epinephelus coioides (Serranidae), and P. selaris n. sp. (males) probably from the abdominal cavity (found in washings) of Selar crumenophthalmus (Carangidae). The new species are characteris

Occurrence of anisakid parasites in marine fishes and whales off New Caledonia.

Anisakid nematodes are the most infamous parasites occurring in seafood with ability to infect humans. In the present study, the infective stages of five anisakid larval types, including Anisakis types I and III, Terranova types I and II and Contracaecum larval type, as well as adult Anisakis paggiae are reported from 16 host species from New Caledonian waters. The specific identity of the larval types was investigated using ITS sequence data. Anisakis larval types I and III were identified as Anisakis typica and Anisakis brevispiculata, respectively, based on identical ITS sequences. However,

Aetiology of community-acquired pneumonia in hospitalized adult patients in New Caledonia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the aetiology of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in hospitalized adult patients in New Caledonia, a French archipelago in the South Pacific. METHODS: Confirmed CAP patients (n=137) were enrolled prospectively. Pathogens were detected by culture, molecular methods, serology on paired sera, immunofluorescence on nasopharyngeal swabs and antigen detection in urine. RESULTS: The aetiology of CAP was determined in 82 of 137 cases (59.8%), of which 31 exhibited two or more pathogens (37.8%). Hundred and seventeen pathogens were detected: Streptococcus pneumoniae was the m

Epidemiology of leptospirosis in New Caledonia (South Pacific): a one-year survey.

We describe a series of 144 cases of leptospirosis diagnosed in 1989 in New Caledonia. The incidence rate was 90 per 100,000 person-years, with a specific mortality rate of 4% patients. Those affected (100 males, 44 females) were mainly aged 20 to 40 years. Incidence in rural areas (112 per 100,000 person-years) was seven times higher than in urban settlements. Two periods with higher incidence were noticed corresponding to highest rainfall. Twenty-nine of the cases occurred in individuals with professions commonly associated with leptospirosis. Contacts with rats, dogs and ditch or river wate

[Leprosy in New Caledonia from 1983 to 1992. Histopathological and epidemiological data].

New Caledonia is a South Pacific Island inhabited by more than 170,000 people: most of them are melanesians or europeans. Multidrug therapy for Hansen disease has been employed since 1983; so we made an epidemiologic and histopathologic study of the new cases diagnosed for 10 years, from 1983 to 1992. Local (clinical, histological, microbiological and immunological) means of diagnosis are described. In New Caledonia, the endemic level is lower than in the small neighbouring Pacific islands but there is still a native reservoir of Mycobacterium leprae with 40% multibacillary types. Nearly half

[Cardiac manifestations in leptospirosis. Apropos of 15 cases observed in New Caledonia].

The authors report the cardiovascular manifestations observed in 15 cases of severe leptospirosis in New Caledonia. Cardiovascular collapse is frequent. Electrocardiographic alterations consist mainly of arrhythmia secondary to atrial fibrillation and repolarisation disorders. A picture of pseudo-pericarditis has also been observed. These cardiac manifestations represent a factor of gravity when associated with multi-visceral manifestations which control the prognosis.

[Ciguatera fish poisoning in New Caledonia. Clinical and epidemiological aspects (author's transl)].

The author studies the incidence of ciguatera fish poisoning on the public health in New Caledonia. He gives the results of a large scaled inquiry on the clinical and epidemiological aspects of the disease. The geographical distribution and the toxic species are discussed. It does appear that, though being not an acute medical problem, ciguatera is an important cause of morbidity in some tribus of the Pines and Loyalty Islands primarily, where the reef fish is the chief animal proteic resource.

Ethnic disparities in mental health problems in New Caledonia and French Polynesia.

OBJECTIVES: Indigenous people experience poorer mental health compared to the general population. Socioeconomic gaps partly explain these disparities. However, there is variability between populations and French overseas territories are understudied. This study examines the prevalence of mental health problems among Indigenous people in New Caledonia and French Polynesia, describing and comparing it with that of their counterparts while considering associated factors. METHODS: We used the data from the cross-sectional Mental Health in the General Population survey in the only 3 sites for whic

Prevalence of Anaplasmataceae and Filariidae species in unowned and military dogs in New Caledonia.

Dogs are competent reservoir hosts of several zoonotic agents, including Filariidae nematodes and Anaplasmataceae family bacteria. The latter family unites human and veterinary pathogens (Anaplasma, Ehrlichia and Neorickettsia bacteria) with Wolbachia, some of which are obligatory endosymbionts of pathogenic filarial nematodes. The epidemiology of Anaplasmataceae and Filariidae species infecting dogs living in kennels in New Caledonia was studied. 64 EDTA blood samples were screened for the presence of Anaplasmataceae and filarial nematodes. Molecular study was conducted using primers and prob

Deep-seated fungal diseases in the South Pacific, especially in New Caledonia.

The main deep-seated fungal diseases and their encountered pathology in New Caledonia and other islands of the South Pacific are reviewed (1970-96). Cryptococcosis is encountered in all islands of the South Pacific, Australia and Papua New Guinea, with a predominance of variety gattii, which is associated with some species of Eucalyptus. Histoplasmosis is not uncommon, and there was an epidemic in New Caledonia in 1994 among people who had visited a bat-inhabited cave. Mycetomas, in particular presenting as pale granules in tissues, are encountered in New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea,

[29 cases of malaria introduced into New Caledonia from 1992 to 1995].

Although located in a tropical zone of the South Pacific, the island of New Caledonia is malaria-free. This retrospective study of imported malaria was conducted jointly by the Pasteur Institute of New Caledonia and the Gaston Bourret Territorial Hospital between January 1, 1992 and December 31, 1995. A total of 29 patients were hospitalized for malaria. Most contracted the disease in Vanuatu. Plasmodium vivax was involved more often than Plasmodium falciparum (22 vs. 11). No case was severe, complicated, or fatal. In most cases treatment consisted of quinine followed by mefloquine. The median

High syphilis but low HIV prevalence rates among pregnant women in New Caledonia.

Sexually transmitted infections have been described as one of the major health problems in several countries of the Pacific Region. The objective of the study was to estimate the prevalence of pregnant women infected with HIV and/or syphilis in New Caledonia. HIV and syphilis test results were obtained from women attending antenatal clinics. From 2008 to 2011, 3353 pregnant women were tested with a mean prevalence of active syphilis found at 5.6/100,000. No pregnant women tested positive for HIV. Despite available resources and public health strategies similar to those existing in France, acti

Trace metal geochemistry in mangrove sediments and their transfer to mangrove plants (New Caledonia).

Because of their physico-chemical inherent properties, mangrove sediments may act as a sink for pollutants coming from catchments. The main objective of this study was to assess the distribution of some trace metals in the tissues of various mangrove plants developing downstream highly weathered ferralsols, taking into account metals partitioning in the sediment. In New Caledonia, mangroves act as a buffer between open-cast mines and the world's largest lagoon. As a result of the erosion of lateritic soils, Ni and Fe concentrations in the sediment were substantially higher than the world avera

Rodent abundance dynamics and leptospirosis carriage in an area of hyper-endemicity in New Caledonia.

BACKGROUND: Widespread but particularly incident in the tropics, leptospirosis is transmitted to humans directly or indirectly by virtually any Mammal species. However, rodents are recognized as the most important reservoir. In endemic regions, seasonal outbreaks are observed during hot rainy periods. In such regions, hot spots can be evidenced, where leptospirosis is "hyper-endemic", its incidence reaching 500 annual cases per 100,000. A better knowledge of how rodent populations and their Leptospira prevalence respond to seasonal and meteorological fluctuations might help implement relevant

Rapid Leptospira identification by direct sequencing of the diagnostic PCR products in New Caledonia.

BACKGROUND: Most of the current knowledge of leptospirosis epidemiology originates from serological results obtained with the reference Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT). However, inconsistencies and weaknesses of this diagnostic technique are evident. A growing use of PCR has improved the early diagnosis of leptospirosis but a drawback is that it cannot provide information on the infecting Leptospira strain which provides important epidemiologic data. Our work is aimed at evaluating if the sequence polymorphism of diagnostic PCR products could be used to identify the infecting Leptospira s

Environmental exposure to tremolite and respiratory cancer in New Caledonia: a case-control study.

A case-control study on respiratory cancers was conducted in New Caledonia (South Pacific), where a high incidence of malignant pleural mesothelioma had been observed. The disease pattern suggested an environmental exposure to asbestos. The first results showed that, in some areas, tremolite asbestos derived from local outcroppings was used as whitewash (locally named "pö"). All cases diagnosed between 1993 and 1995 (including 15 pleural mesotheliomas, 228 lung cancers, and 23 laryngeal cancers) and 305 controls were included in the study. Detailed information on past or present use of the whi

Age-based life history of Pacific longnose parrotfish Hipposcarus longiceps from New Caledonia.

The Pacific longnose parrotfish, Hipposcarus longiceps, is a medium- to large-bodied scarine labrid that is among the most commonly harvested species in mixed reef fisheries across the Indo-Pacific. Despite its ecological and fisheries importance, assessments of stock status and development of appropriate management strategies for the species have been limited by an absence of biological information. To date, the only detailed studies of the biology of H. longiceps have occurred in tropical regions. This study examined the biology of H. longiceps in southern New Caledonia, towards the southern
