Considerable variation in the epidemiology of encephalocoeles throughout the world has been described in previous studies. Previous New Zealand case-control studies have found increased risk for leukaemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and multiple myeloma in farmers. We report here a further series of New Zealand Cancer Registry based case-control studies of farming and site-specific cancer risks. Carcinoid tumours in Auckland diagnosed during 1976-87 have been reviewed retrospectively. Eighty-three patients with carcinoid tumours were seen during this time (56 appendiceal, 11 small bowel, two colorectal, 10 pulmonary and four other). Three patients had carcinoid syndrome. The most common presentation for appendiceal carcinoid was acute appendicitis. A retrospective study of 972 patients diagnosed as having cutaneous malignant melanoma in the Auckland area from 1970 to 1985 is presented. Back injury is one of the commonest claims for accident compensation. A survey carried out over three months in 1984 identified 420 claimants having details of their accidents. Labourers, freezing workers, coal miners and railway workers were at high risk. Over half (54.7%) developed back pain whilst lifting and for almost two-thirds (63.6%) there was a sudden strain.
