Effects of Nigella sativa supplementation for one month on cardiac reserve in rats.

Nigella sativa (N. sativa) has a long history of use in folk medicine. In a current study performed in this laboratory, two-month dietary supplementation with N. sativa extract to normal rats has shown a homogenous cardiac hypertrophy and enhanced cardiac contractility at baseline conditions. In the present study, shorter (one-month) duration of oral N. sativa administration was adopted to detect possible earlier cardiac responses. In addition, in vitro cardiac stress by the beta adrenoceptor agonist isoproterenol was used to assess the intrinsic cardiac reserve mechanisms. The hearts of Nigel

Nigella sativa oil for prevention of chronic cyclosporine nephrotoxicity: an experimental model.

Nephrotoxicity is the main secondary effect of cyclosporine A (CsA) treatment. The antioxidant action of Nigella sativa oil (NSO) may explain the protective effect of these agents against various hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic models in vivo and in vitro. This study was designed to investigate the possible protective effects of NSO, in prevention of chronic CsA-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Animals were randomly divided into four experimental groups: the control group received sunflower oil, the other groups were treated with CsA (25 mg/kg/day b.w. orally) or NSO (2 ml/kg orally) or CsA + NSO,

Protective effect of Nigella sativa seeds against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage.

It has been reported that Nigella sativa oil possesses hepatoprotective effects in some models of liver toxicity. However, it is N. sativa seeds that are used in the treatment of liver ailments in folk medicine rather than its oil. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the aqueous suspension of N. sativa on carbon tetrachloride (CCL4)-induced liver damage. Aqueous suspension of the seeds was given orally at two dose levels (250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg) for five days. CCL4 (250 microl/kg intraperitoneally / day in olive oil) was given to the experimental group on days 4

Characterization of phospholipid composition of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) seed oil.

Black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) seed oil was extracted with two different solvents, n-hexane (H) and a mixture of chloroform/methanol (CM) (2:1, by volume). Amount of total lipid (TL) was higher in the CM miscelle (39.2% of seed fresh weight) than in the H extract (37.9%). Chemical characteristics as well as fatty acid profile of the TL extracts were compared and the analysis revealed that the major fatty acid was linoleic acid C18:2n-6 (ca. 57% of total fatty acid methyl esters (FAME)) followed by oleic acid C18:1n-9. Palmitic acid C16:0 was the major saturated fatty acid and detected in appr

Thymoquinone and Nigella sativa oil protection against methionine-induced hyperhomocysteinemia in rats.

Although the state of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) appears to be associated with higher risks of coronary, cerebral and peripheral vascular disease as well as with a number of other clinical conditions, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not fully elucidated. There is strong evidence, however, that HHcy could induce a pathogenic state of oxidative stress. The interest in modulating the elevated levels of total homocysteine in HHcy and/or their negative impacts through preventive strategies, particularly through the supplementation with vitamins that may be linked to the homeostasis of homo

The effect of Nigella sativa extracts against Porphyromonas gingivalis isolated from periodontitis patients.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition that results in pocket formation, gingival recession, and tooth loss by gradually destroying the periodontium. An alternate therapeutic approach that can address these problems is required due to the prohibitive cost of periodontal therapy, unfavorable antibiotic side effects, the advent of novel bacterial strains, and the resistance of those strains. The primary goal of our study was to assess Nigella sativa's (N. sativa) antibacterial effectiveness against Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) utilizing seed extract. PATIENTS AND METH
