Microbial CO2 fixation in alpine grassland soils is highly sensitive to warming and drought. Nitrogen inputs from grazing may stimulate autotrophic nitrifiers, including ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). These nitrifiers assimilate carbon through CO2 fixation, but how their activity is associated with microbial CO2 fixation under warming and drought remains unclear. Here, we investigated microbial CO2 fixation and nitrification under altered temperature and moisture using urea-amended soil microcosms with 13CO2 labeling, DN

Nitrification in agricultural soils drives significant nitrogen fertiliser losses and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, particularly in intensively fertilised rice systems. Biological nitrification inhibition (BNI), mediated by plant-derived compounds, offers a promising nature-based strategy to mitigate these losses, but the factors controlling BNI potential remain poorly understood. In this study, BNI mechanisms across five rice genotypes were investigated by combining plant physiology, soil nitrification dynamics and exudate metabolomics. Nitrifier suppression was strongest in the rhizosphere

Nitrification was measured within a sand and gravel aquifer on Cape Cod, MA, using a series of single-well injection tests. The aquifer contained a wastewater-derived contaminant plume, the core of which was anoxic and contained ammonium. The study was conducted near the downgradient end of the ammonium zone, which was characterized by inversely trending vertical gradients of oxygen (270 to 0 microM) and ammonium (19 to 625 microM) and appeared to be a potentially active zone for nitrification. The tests were conducted by injecting a tracer solution (ambient ground water + added constituents)

Bioremediation of Cr(Ⅵ) and ammonia is considered as a promising and cost-effective alternative to chemical and physical methods. However, Cr(Ⅵ) could inhibit nitrogen removal by inhibiting intra-/extracellular electron (IET/EET) transfer or nitrifying and denitrifying enzymes activity due to its higher solubility. In this study, we isolated a simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) microorganism Acinetobacter haemolyticus RH19, capable of outcompeting oxygen to take nitrogen oxides/ammonia as electron acceptors, and studied a combined accelerant (cysteine, biotin and cytokinin) t

The long-lived greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) and short-lived reactive nitrogen (Nr) gases such as ammonia (NH3), nitrous acid (HONO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are produced and emitted from fertilized soils and play a critical role for climate warming and air quality. However, only few studies have quantified the production and emission potentials for long- and short-lived gaseous nitrogen (N) species simultaneously in agricultural soils. To link the gaseous N species to intermediate N compounds [ammonium (NH4+), hydroxylamine (NH2OH), and nitrite (NO2-)] and estimate their temperature ch

A large proportion (60-90%) of ingested tetracyclines are released to slurry, soils, surface waters and ground water, which has raised extensive concerns and may pose a risk to the soil ecosystem. A 56-day experiment was conducted to study the bioremediation by earthworms on soil microbial diversity and partial nitrification processes in oxytetracycline (OTC)-contaminated soil. The results showed that high OTC concentration significantly decreased the activity of soil bacteria, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA). Earthworms were found to accelerate the degradation efficiency an

The classical "new production" paradigm, designed for stable open-ocean ecosystems, distorts biological carbon pump assessments when applied to marginal seas-that receive substantial exogenous reduced nitrogen (N). Here, using 15N isotope tracing in the spring and autumn Bohai and Yellow Seas, we simultaneously quantified nitrification and N uptake rates and coupled these with microbial community dynamics. Our results reveal a pronounced seasonal asynchrony between nitrification and N uptake. In spring, high irradiance inhibited ammonia-oxidizing archaea, resulting in negligible nitrification

Nitrogen (N) fertilisers play a key role in food security by providing essential nutrients that enhance crop growth. However, excessive applications of N fertilisers can lead to N loss from the soil, resulting in potential air and water pollution. Nitrification inhibitors (NIs) and urease inhibitors (UIs) are chemical compounds with the potential to reduce ammonia loss, nitrous oxide emissions and nitrate leaching while improving N use efficiency. However, questions relating to potential risks to the environment and food chain have been raised. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the enviro

The present study investigated the biodegradation of three iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM), namely, iopamidol, iohexol, and iopromide, in simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND) system maintained in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The results showed that variable aeration patterns (anoxic-aerobic-anoxic) and micro-aerobic condition were most effective in the biotransformation of ICM while achieving organic carbon and nitrogen removal. The highest removal efficiencies of iopamidol, iohexol, and iopromide were 48.24%, 47.75%, and 57.46%, respectively, in micro-aerobic condition.

Consistent with the observation that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) outnumber ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) in many eutrophic ecosystems globally, AOB typically dominate activated sludge aeration basins from municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this study, we demonstrate that the growth of AOA strains inoculated into sterile-filtered wastewater was inhibited significantly, in contrast to uninhibited growth of a reference AOB strain. In order to identify possible mechanisms underlying AOA-specific inhibition, we show that complex mixtures of organic compounds, such as yeast ext

Carbon disulfide (CS2) is a widely used enzyme inhibitor with cytotoxic properties, commonly employed in viscose fibers and cellophane production due to its non-polar characteristics. In industry, CS2 is often removed by aeration, however, residual CS2 may enter the wastewater treatment plants, impacting the performance of nitrifying sludge. Currently, there is a notable dearth of research on the response of nitrifying sludge to CS2-induced stress. This study delves into the alterations in the performance of nitrifying sludge under short-term and long-term CS2 stress, scrutinizes the toxic eff

Nitrogen and phosphate removal from wastewater relies on different functional bacteria. In this study, a novel strain affiliated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from activated sludge by gradient dilution and performed heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification and aerobic phosphate removal (HNADPR). The strain showed an ammonium removal efficiency of 87% and a phosphate removal efficiency of 97% under optimal conditions, such as C/N ratio of 10, P/N ratio of 0.1, temperature of 30°C, and pH of 7.5-8.5. The modified Gompertz model could fit well the heterotrophic ammonium nitr

Nitrogen-removal performance was investigated in a penicillin wastewater biological treatment plant (P-WWTP) reconstructed from a cyclic activated sludge system (CASS) tank designed for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). Good performance was obtained during a 900-day operation period, as indicated by effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and ammonia nitrogen (NH₃‒N) values of 318 ± 34, 28.7 ± 2.4 and<0.2 mg L⁻¹ when the influent COD, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and NH₃‒N were 3089 ± 453, 251.4 ± 26.5 and 124.8 ± 26.8 mg L⁻¹, respectively. This study describes the simultaneous removal of carbon, ammonium, and phosphate from domestic wastewater by a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) which was operated for 360 days. During the operation, the maximum removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) reached 93.1%, 83.98%, and 96.41%, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that the MABR could potentially treat wastewater with a high ammonium concentration and a relatively low C/N ratio. Dissolved oxygen and multiple pollutants, including ammonium, carbon, phosphate, and sulf

Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) was established under continuous aeration (6 mgO2 L-1) aiming at achieving a feasible and simple operational strategy for treating multi-electrolyte saline wastewaters. Two Structured Fixed-Bed Reactors (SFBR) were used to assess SND performance with (Saline Reactor, SR) and without (Control Reactor, CR) salinity interference. Salinity was gradually increased (from 1.7 to 9 atm) based on the composition of water supplied in arid regions of Brazil. At 1.7 atm, N-NH4+ oxidation and Total Nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies of 95.9 ± 2.8 and 65.

Inhibition of nitrification by four typical pollutants (acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, acetonitrile and cyanide) in acrylonitrile wastewater was investigated. The inhibitory effect of cyanide on nitrification was strongest, with a 50% inhibitory concentration of 0.218 mg·gVSS-1 being observed in a municipal activated sludge system. However, the performance of nitrification was recovered when cyanide was completely degraded. The nitrification, which had been inhibited by 4.17 mg·gVSS-1 of free cyanide for 24 h, was recovered to greater than 95% of that without cyanide after 10 days of recovery. T

In Korea, more than 80% of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with capacities of 500 m3·d-1 or more are capable of removing nitrogen from wastewater through biological nitrification and denitrification processes. Normally, these biological processes show excellent performance, but if a toxic chemical is present in the influent to a WWTP, the biological processes (especially, the nitrification process) may be affected and fail to function normally; nitrifying bacteria are known very vulnerable to toxic substances. Then, the toxic compound as well as the nitrogen in wastewater may be

The algae-partial nitrification/anammox (A-PNA) process offers significant advantages for carbon-neutral wastewater nitrogen removal. This study successfully established a zero-aeration filamentous algal-PNA (FA-PNA) granular system by incorporating Pantanalinema sp. under stepwise increasing light intensities (0, 15, 60 and 90 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹). Increasing light intensity promoted the enrichment of extracellular polymeric substances and filamentous algae, facilitating granular growth and achieving a nitrogen removal rate of 85 mg N·(L·d)⁻¹. Quorum-sensing signaling molecules concentration increas

Considering the unsatisfied nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) treatment performance of mariculture wastewater caused by low carbon/nitrogen (C/N), a novel iron-carbon (Fe-C) micro-electrolysis coupled to heterotrophic nitrification aerobic denitrification (HNAD) process was proposed to enhance the N and P elimination. Results revealed that total nitrogen (TN) removal and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies in Fe-C filter with HNAD (R-Fe) increased by 76.1% and 113.3% compared to filter packed with ceramsite (R-C). Fe-C micro-electrolysis reaction led to the decrease of microbial diversity

Ammonia oxidation to hydroxylamine is catalyzed by the ammonia monooxygenase enzyme and copper (Cu) is a key element for this process. We investigated the effect of soil bioavailable Cu changes induced through the application of Cu-complexing compounds on nitrification rate, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) amoA gene abundance, and mineral nitrogen (N) leaching in urine patches using the Manawatu Recent soil. Further, evaluated the combination of organic compound calcium lignosulphonate (LS) with a growth stimulant Gibberellic acid (GA). Treatments were applied in May 2021 as
